You got in today. Can't take credit but a +ve Bossi article put up in the Football Media Thread stating there are six Youth players in todays squad. I put the players names up in the Matchday thread. Obviously this is more out of necessity due to our injuries, crowded schedule and missing youngsters away on national team duty. I am hopeful that Gombau will be a bit more proactive with youth moving forward. He brought through some young guns at Adelaide and doesn't seem afraid to give them a chance if they are ready (Popa did too with some of our guys). I would be quite happy to see WSW adopt the Athletic Bilbao mantra (as mentioned in the Bossi article) of (eventually) all players bar foreigners hailing from western Sydney. We're well on the way to establishing the production line, it would be mad not to utilise it. Paul01, TheSweeper and DinoPresinger 3 Link to comment

Absolutely amazing achievement to have never been relegated despite that! I think it's Real Sociedad who have only Basques but also some foreigners. Tbh in a league with visa restrictions anyway, I prefer that model, it's nice to have a few players from elsewhere on your books, witness the following we have in Japan because of Ono for example. Zelinsky
Mack, From previous experience, players who have not been offered a contract extension around this time of the year are likely to be gonsky, with a couple of exceptions? Is that your expectation as well? If so then we might lose 5 of our starting 11, and 5 of our nominal bench players, or something like that. If a couple of players who are contracted until 18/19 move on as well then we'll look at another near total rebuild, what do you reckon? Expiring End 2017/18 Alvaro Cejudo (Foreign, Marquee) Brendon Santalab Brendan Hamill Jack Clisby Jerrad Tyson Jonathan Aspropotamitis Marcelo Carrusca Michael Thwaite Raul Llorente (Foreign) Robbie Cornthwaite Steven Lustica Vedran Janjetovic Link to comment
mack
Having a look at our database of players, contracts & extensions seem to be in one of a few categories: 1) Extensions for first team players are usually signed between mid-December to mid-January (Poljak, Covic, Haliti's 2nd extension, Cole) 2) Occasionally players are signed to long-term extensions around September after signing a new contract in December/January the season before (Poljak again) 3) Players who come to the club on 1 or 2 year deals but don't stay longer (Nichols, Bouzanis) and those who got extensions but we let go (NTS, Covic) 4) Players outside the first team squad who we were probably looking to replace but didn't find anyone, getting a new contract in May after the season ends (Haliti's first extension, Trifiro) I don't believe the club have announced any extensions at all which might be a symptom of Gombau's late arrival and our inconsistent form. From that list: Out: Cejudo - Utter flop. Turns 34 in a couple weeks. Not a Gombau signing. Marquee. He would need a massive turnaround to deserve another year. Assuming he doesn't just retire outright. Thwaite - Gombau will want younger defenders more comfortable on the ball. He'll be 35 years old when the new season starts. Out of the two Thwaites he's the one I think Gombau would retain if he keeps 1 of them. Cornthwaite - Same deal as with Thwaite. Tyson - His 2nd stint has basically copied the first one. A major injury and not really impressing even in the youth league, with few chances as the first choice keeper stays healthy. Hamill - Gombau surely recognises his inability to defend and his mediocre technical ability on the ball. Surely. Lustica - If he stays I'm pretty sure it'll only be a Trifiro style end of the season extension. Hasn't done enough so far to earn a mid-season extension. And to stay: Santalab - Unless he wants to retire I can't see the club not offering him a new deal. Clisby - Stay. I think he's done enough to get a spot. Carrusca - He's not a foreign player any more, if he doesn't want a huge contract then we might give him another year. Aspro - If he had a really good season he'd probably be going overseas, but now we might offer a 2 or 3 year deal and let Gombau keep working to improve him. Llorente - Had a good season so far, done well at both right & left fullback, not a marquee. I can easily see him staying another year. Vedran - I don't think the market for keepers is particularly great at the moment. The only real potential signing is Lawrence Thomas from Victory. We would need to sign at least 2 central defenders and 2 wingers. We might upgrade Suman to a first team contract and I think we would have 1 spot left which might go to another central midfielder. Zelinsky
Thanks. Clisby to be added to the list of outers? If so then that'll be at least seven senior players gone. Can you see Roly/Herd/Baccus go? Link to comment
mack
Oh. I thought I'd put Clisby in the stay list. I'll edit that. I would think Clisby will stay as fullbacks don't grow on trees and he's done well enough imo to get another year. I'd be hesitant to assume any players with contracts for next year will leave. They clearly had an opportunity to leave along with Jumpei & Melling and didn't take it, so either they don't want to leave or the club doesn't want them to leave. With that said, I wouldn't say anything is certain until the transfer window is closed. DinoPresinger and Zelinsky 2 Link to comment
Zelinsky
If the rumours are true that Tarek is coming back then either Clisby or Llorente will be gone. Quite frankly, I can't see Risdon staying at the club, he'll get snatched up after or during the WC. I guess the two-year contractors will have to perform for the rest of the season. Roly to me is half the player he was under Merrick at the Nix. We'll see. Link to comment
