  • Asian Debut Ends In Defeat

    mack

A lightning strike in the first minute was cancelled out by sloppy defending as the Western Sydney Wanderers lost their AFC Asian Champions League debut as Ulsan Hyundai scored three unanswered goals to take the match 3-1.

Tomi Juric was absent due to injury sustained against Perth Glory but his replacement Brendon Santalab made his own dazzling mark on the Asian Champions League in just 40 seconds. Shinji Ono lobbed the ball over the Ulsan defence for the run of Santalab, who turned and fired a side volley past the diving Ulsan goalkeeper to the delight of the 11,000 strong crowd.

Ulsan showed the higher quality of the ACL by responding to going behind with aplomb. With the field obscured as a result of half a dozen smoke bombs being let off in the RBB, the shell shocked Wanderers defence failed to clear the ball. Jerome Polenz, Aaron Mooy & Nikolai Topor-Stanley all failed to get the job done in the area, South Korean international Kim Shin Wook fired a snapshot into the bottom right corner to equalise.

The smoke bombs will see an expensive bill from the Asian Football Confederation for the Wanderers with each device coming with a $5,000 USD price tag. The AFC can also sanction the Wanderers to playing matches behind closed doors if more pyro is let off in future matches.

3 minutes before half-time Western Sydney failed yet again to clear their lines. Jerome Polenz hit a defensive header back across the face of goal, Matthew Spiranovic could only nod the ball onto the cultured left foot of Ko Chang Hyun who hit a low half-volley across Ante Covic, the South Koreans taking a 2-1 lead into the break.

The game was effectively over as a contest when a third defensive mix up saw Ulsan lead 3-1 through another South Korean international. Kang Min-Soo pounced on a rebound after Iacopo La Rocca could only flick on a defensive header into the chest of Min-Soo, who let the ball drop before tapping home from point-blank range under a scrambling Covic.

The first match for the Wanderers in Asia shows just how tough the competition is. Mistakes are punished without mercy. My personal hope is that even if the Wanderers manage to lose all 6 matches our supporters do not turn against the competition like others have done in the past. Tonight did not dampen my enthusiasm for the Wanderers playing in the ACL one iota. The A-League & FFA Cup are not the only competitions this club can win.

Clubs in the A-League often talk about wanting to become the biggest club in Asia. They often forget that they need to start by becoming a club in Asia. The Wanderers want to compete in Asia every season, and playing in the ACL shows the club where we stand in our confederation. The ACL will push the players, coaching staff, supporters and those who run the club. Standing still is not an option. This club is not measured merely against other clubs in Australia, but against clubs across Asia. Improvement to reach the level of clubs we face in the group stage and potentially in the knock-out rounds will take time and should not be expected overnight.

The goal of this club is not just to win the A-League and/or FFA Cup.

It is to do one better than Adelaide United did, with Western Sydney wining the Asian Champions League.

I expect every member and follower of this club to support that goal one hundred percent just as we expect the players to give that much on the field in every match we play.

the flares are going to cost the club $35k  :shok:

    farrrrrrrrrk me

That is a significant amount to a new club like WSW and its overheads / running costs.

Only a small issue according to some though.

Strange that the seating on either side of the tunnel on the western stand had been roped off. Was very weird looking across the park and seeing full blocks of empty seats (I was in the eastern stands). I guess it was done to make the crowd look a bit more dense for the camera but seems like a waste of good seating since the areas on either side of the roped section were being used.

It did look weird and wasteful. I think it is an ACL match requirement to have a certain distance between the "dugouts" and fans.

surely only ESFC need such a rule.

Here you go, this is the FIFA requirements, but it also applies to AFC fixtures as they've adopted the same:

The space behind was also to allow better visibility, remember next year the HAL clubs will have the same/similar style benching.

oh wait..... this isnt the Sydney FC forum.

Good experience last night, hopefully the lads learn the lesson that making small mistakes really matter in the ACL.

think we really need a proper LW & another LB option to D'appuzo, we cant keep relying on polenz & hersi

bring on Newcastle on Sunday :)

If we can prevent those defensive mistakes next time, I think we're in with a chance to make the next round. Having watched all 3 aussie teams play in the ACL this week, WSW and Victory were both able to get quite a number of shots on target and had nice pockets of possession. CCM will likely continue to struggle unless they have a massive change to their game plan.

There's been a lot of stuff which is overshadowing the most important thing from last night....

    We wore black shorts :D

    This.

First thing that stood out. Loved it!

Why oh why won't our club sell these?!

Because Adults should be banned from wearing full replica kit outfits? (unless you play for a team that uses the WSW kit)

The wife actually said last night, didn't Sydney FC win 3-1 the first time in Asia (I said I think that was about right, I remember China and Talay...) and look where they are now... maybe this can be an omen - get the bad game out of the way, win the next five and see where we can go! :)

The Koreans were never truly tested IMO.

After going ahead we took advantage and failed to score. However once they got the goal they sat back and played us on the counter, hence we were never really being pushed.

But when we gave them the second goal they sat back even more and played counter attacking football more so than before.

To suggest they are not good or did not play well is stupid. These guys can play and despite us having so much ball in 2nd half we really struggled to get in behind them.

We missed Juric badly tonight despite Santa scoring.

3 crap goals allowed Koreans to play and dictate the game.

As for the flares not cool but I don't think it cost us a gaol as both teams were affected yet Ulsan had no issues seeing the ball.

The flares were a coordinated stunt.  Has to be more than 20 people know about this **** so sort them out??

A mate of mine summed it up best last night, after 30 mins they'd figured us out and out Wandered the Wanderers (playing defensive, wait for the mistake and hit on the counter).

Hopefully both a humbling and learning experience.

tifo was amazing, pyro not so much, away support was very poor(they had 3 chants all of them poor), team was pretty poor and just made a few too many errors though the start was amazing at the end of the day we gave it a shot and just fell short, there is always next match though i think the loss made it difficult for us to progress

also the entertainment was total garbage, as usual they ruined the match day experience, no ridiculous thank **** but what the hell was happening at half time?

Away support was from Strathfield and Eastwood. Not really an away support.

Asian team with incredible national and international players and astute coach versus aussie team with good up and comers and an emerging top coach. to be expected, Rome wasn't built in a day.

I thought the flares looked great, but probably not $30g great.

Looking forward to attending the next match, missed this one due to a last hour food poisoning incident ;(

You didn't gamble on one of those pizzas at the Roxy did you ?

no a home made tortilla de papa (spanish oversized egg and potato pancake) eaten the day after it was cooked and reheated in the microwave at work. There was a Spanish revolution in my stomach i think.

There was a Ulsan fan posting on 442 last week and he said they don't play a possession based game.  They play a compact defence and hit on the counter so last night was just a normal game for them.

I agree they summed us up quickly though.  Use the space behind D'Appuzzo and put the big guy in front of NTS and hey presto we had no defence on our left side.

Although we made 3 bad defensive mistakes I'm not so concerned about it as some here are.  Our other opponents won't have their striker with a 14cm height advantage over our tallest defender.  Having said that our defence might be tested more with the ball on the deck.

Just a thought...how would we have gone with a certain big lumbering bald sainted left boot wielding Croatian marksman up front instead of our sad mix of inept ground passes and aversion to shooting on goal except for the first minute of the game...

He might have got himself into position to score by the 6th qualifying game.  ;)

    Would have preferred Juric...

    Welcome to Asia.

We did ok, I don't think we we're really outplayed for the majority of the match, the main difference was they didn't make mistakes and they were clinical in punishing us for ours.

We really need to capitalise on our chances and play with a bit more flare...

Bring back Dino and sign him at CB.

Whenever he is in the pitch goals are hard to come by.

    Makes sense right?

imagine if santalab scored the chance he did to make it 2-1 i think, or 2-0 i forget but it would have changed the entire match
