  • Asian Debut Ends In Defeat

    mack

A lightning strike in the first minute was cancelled out by sloppy defending as the Western Sydney Wanderers lost their AFC Asian Champions League debut as Ulsan Hyundai scored three unanswered goals to take the match 3-1.

Tomi Juric was absent due to injury sustained against Perth Glory but his replacement Brendon Santalab made his own dazzling mark on the Asian Champions League in just 40 seconds. Shinji Ono lobbed the ball over the Ulsan defence for the run of Santalab, who turned and fired a side volley past the diving Ulsan goalkeeper to the delight of the 11,000 strong crowd.

Ulsan showed the higher quality of the ACL by responding to going behind with aplomb. With the field obscured as a result of half a dozen smoke bombs being let off in the RBB, the shell shocked Wanderers defence failed to clear the ball. Jerome Polenz, Aaron Mooy & Nikolai Topor-Stanley all failed to get the job done in the area, South Korean international Kim Shin Wook fired a snapshot into the bottom right corner to equalise.

The smoke bombs will see an expensive bill from the Asian Football Confederation for the Wanderers with each device coming with a $5,000 USD price tag. The AFC can also sanction the Wanderers to playing matches behind closed doors if more pyro is let off in future matches.

3 minutes before half-time Western Sydney failed yet again to clear their lines. Jerome Polenz hit a defensive header back across the face of goal, Matthew Spiranovic could only nod the ball onto the cultured left foot of Ko Chang Hyun who hit a low half-volley across Ante Covic, the South Koreans taking a 2-1 lead into the break.

The game was effectively over as a contest when a third defensive mix up saw Ulsan lead 3-1 through another South Korean international. Kang Min-Soo pounced on a rebound after Iacopo La Rocca could only flick on a defensive header into the chest of Min-Soo, who let the ball drop before tapping home from point-blank range under a scrambling Covic.

The first match for the Wanderers in Asia shows just how tough the competition is. Mistakes are punished without mercy. My personal hope is that even if the Wanderers manage to lose all 6 matches our supporters do not turn against the competition like others have done in the past. Tonight did not dampen my enthusiasm for the Wanderers playing in the ACL one iota. The A-League & FFA Cup are not the only competitions this club can win.

Clubs in the A-League often talk about wanting to become the biggest club in Asia. They often forget that they need to start by becoming a club in Asia. The Wanderers want to compete in Asia every season, and playing in the ACL shows the club where we stand in our confederation. The ACL will push the players, coaching staff, supporters and those who run the club. Standing still is not an option. This club is not measured merely against other clubs in Australia, but against clubs across Asia. Improvement to reach the level of clubs we face in the group stage and potentially in the knock-out rounds will take time and should not be expected overnight.

The goal of this club is not just to win the A-League and/or FFA Cup.

It is to do one better than Adelaide United did, with Western Sydney wining the Asian Champions League.

I expect every member and follower of this club to support that goal one hundred percent just as we expect the players to give that much on the field in every match we play.

They had a few chances and buried them.

We had a few and didn't.

Goes back to many games in the a-league where we had multiple chances but couldn't put them away.

Game against Wellington at home is a prime example.

Shame about the result, couldn't have started any better.

I only wish it would have stayed around 30 degrees as I was sure Ulsan would feel the conditions and tire.

The rain effectively ended any chance of that and highlighted their skill and pace.

Also, great effort from both sets of active supporters.

What is your source for this?

I sort of expected the flares to happen knowing that we won't get points deduction for it. As for the morons that ripped them, guess what? If they are 'priced' at 5k apiece, and with 5-6 being lit tonight, that's some odd 30 grand that the club will have to fork out. Since the club is a business and is seriously concerned with maintaining their bottom line, how do you think they will offset that cost in future that's being caused by a bunch of irresponsible individuals?

tifo was amazing, pyro not so much, away support was very poor(they had 3 chants all of them poor), team was pretty poor and just made a few too many errors though the start was amazing at the end of the day we gave it a shot and just fell short, there is always next match though i think the loss made it difficult for us to progress

also the entertainment was total garbage, as usual they ruined the match day experience, no ridiculous thank **** but what the hell was happening at half time?

Wow, from what i gathered there were about 5 or 6 of them thats around $30 000 in fines, without factoring in the exchange rate, FMD.

I can't believe we have already been threatened with point reductions and now on top of this a fine from the ACL and people still have the hide to say that this is a tiny issue and that people need to stop whinging about flares because people do it in Europe, it's beyond a f*cking joke.

The sooner people realise that they need to stop putting their own ultra wannabe agendas aside and put the good of the club first, the sooner we can stop letting one minute of bullshit continually ruin all the postives.

Well I feel like I have been brought down to earth after the first minute of that match. It is a true shame that our club will have to fork over 30000 for stupid flares. It is getting to a point where I am thinking if they have to threat us with 3 points just to make it stop then it is pretty bad. I NEVER WANT TO SEE THOSE POINTS GO, but after last night with 6 going off I can see where the FFA are coming on. This is not Europe, this is Australia, and we treat it differently here.

Actually it's about $5500 AUD per flare, because it's $5000 USD

Unless we can find a way to rig the exchange rates lol

    The FFA won't do anything

Did the FFA act on Melbourne Victory after their flares in their qualifier in Geelong a few weeks ago?

LMC even my wife commented in the black shorts!

Overall the game was okay we created some really good chances NTS and Ono probaby should have found the net with their headers and Santa wth that one on one but great first time strike early on!

The 3 goals all come because of poor headed clearances for polenz, Spira and la rocca - ball has to go up and out not back in Spira and polenz case or low in case of la rocca

It was mentioned they would live off the second ball and they did every goal came from it

Would have rather got carved up 3 times and say yep Ulsan too good for us but that wasn't the case

That what is disappointing about the game

Still we can hold our heads high and take some confidence from it

Off field stuff no point on commenting about idiots will be idiots

Also fantastic tifo - hearing praise everywhere for it this morning!

Just thought of it, where were Mebrahtu, Golec and Mullen?

If they were signed just for ACL then shouldn't we play them?

Or will they mainly play away games to keep a couple of regulars in Australia and fresh for HAL?

In late news Wanderers has signed Andrew Bogut on a guest contract for the remainder of the ACL campaign.  When asked about the signing Popa said "Last night we saw the threat from the big Korean Sook so we decided to fill our last spot in the squad with a tall Australian defender.  Andrew is 5cm taller than the big Korean so it should give him something to really sook about when we play them away from home.  We would like to thank our sister club in the US, GSW for releasing him at short notice to WSW.  And besides, he is a good Croatian boy"  ;)

Did anyone else see those shots of Hersi standing next to the big Korean? It looked liked something out of the Guinness book of records.

Overall I thought the boys played well last night and if hadn't been for those groan inducing errors and not taking our own very good chances, we would be waxing lyrical about our display.  My only problem with Mack's summary is the comment "the game was effectively over as a contest when a third defensive mix up saw Ulsan lead 3-1". My main gripe this season, apart from not taking enough chances, is that we are not finishing games well, no matter whether we are winning, losing or drawing. The very best teams play out the full 90-95 mins to the max and win or scrape a point in extra time.... several times a season.  Being two goals down with 25 minutes to go should not be regarded as insurmountable, especially from a team that prides itself in its winning mentality and physical and mental strength. The problem with Mack's statement is not that it is inaccurate but that he's right. It's something Popa has to fix.

Yes agree poor defending cost us, however, the pressure they applied counted hugely for them (goals)

Clearly their coaching staff did their Homework really well on us and it showed.

Nothing further to add to the Flare issue than has already been said. Very disappointing, just hope we don't suffer badly as a consequence.

Tough intro to Asia, its a totally different level, they buried their chances and we didnt then they defended like we usually do.  Simply they were too good all over the park.  Be unfair to single out poor performers as we had plenty. We are not real good at chasing games and it showed, we became rushed and tried over the top long balls or went wide when we could of shot, it wasnt the best but credit to Ulsan they were very good. Thought the atmosphere for such a small rained on crowd was first rate, the tiffo was fantastic and a big **** you to whoever ripped the flares, care more about your own ego than the club you claim to support. The sooner someone beats the **** our of these dumb ****s the better.

Personally, I thought Ulsan were very average. They had good close control and speed but they lacked a little direction going forward, they had few chances but the difference was that we gave them easy goals. We were content letting them have possession after our goal, which might be fine in the HAL but in the ACL it's a different ball game.

That said, this was our first Asian experience, like many Asian experiences it can end in tiers and a bit more loose at the back than you'd originally bargained for... and it's always a little wet... but still the team effort was a bit down and the opposition took advantage of that.

With repsect to the flares, I've said it before and I'll say it again, they are banned and punishment should be forthcoming. I actually do like the atmosphere they bring: prior to the Uslan goal the vision of Covic standing against the floodlights, rain and smoke looked amazing. Then you see images such as Olympiakos vs Man. Utd. and then the AFC slap fans on the club - however, the club know the consequences.

Ulsan are in pre-season. Our biggest advantage right now is that we should be more match fit than these other teams but it looked like we were the ones getting tired as the game came near its end.

I did hear a few stay that last night on the way out.

I'm not so sure to be honest. Modern day footballers don't let themselves go like they used to in the off-season and can often be fresher than those in the mid-season swing and suffering from a heavy match schedule.
