Brendon Santalab scored the only goal of the game late on to secure a first home derby win for the Wanderers.

Substitute Santalab made his presence felt against his old club in the 86th minute when he chested down a flubbed shot from Youssouf Hersi then fired low underneath Sydney keeper Vedran Janjetovic to give the Wanderers all three points and Derby bragging rights.

The two teams walked out to witness a tifo display from the Red & Black Bloc, hundreds of flags waving through the entire home end, part of a crowd over 18,000 strong. The biggest notable absence from the Wanderers squad was Jerome Polenz through an injury concern picked up at training during the week. His replacement was 16 year old Daniel Alessi, a true baptism of fire for the young fullback having to make his debut in a derby.

The first big chance of the game fell to the boots of Del Piero, who took advantage of a good pass from Nikola Petkovic. The Italian superstar tried his usual trick of cutting back onto his right foot but Nikolai Topor-Stanley & Matthew Spiranovic were both aware to the danger and together blocked the shot and it dribbled to Ante Covic.

36 minutes in Mark Bridge scraped the paint off the far post, Bridge turned Pedj Bojic inside out and the Wanderers striker tried to curl a shot past Janjetovic, only to see the ball bounce out via the base of the post.

Right before half-time an extraordinary sequence of events somehow failed to see the Wanderers take the lead. Youssouf Hersi intercepted a poor pass from Marc Warren, then from near the edge of the center circle he launched a long distance lob over the scrambling Janjetovic. Striking the bar with a thud the rebound fell to the chest of Juric who inexplicably tried to blast the ball through the goal instead of a simple tap-in, and yet again the woodwork rattled to the amazement of the crowd. The last major event of the half was Iacopo La Rocca finally succumbing to an injury given to him from an atrocious tackle from Matt Jurman, La Rocca replaced by Jason Trifiro.

Spiranovic's immense game continued into the second half, after an hour Del Piero released Ranko Despotovic, who cut back inside, leaving Topor-Stanley stranded, it was Spiranovic to the rescue with a full length diving block to prevent any chance of a goal to Sydney.

The departure of Del Piero with 10 minutes to play saw the game turn fully into the hands of the Wanderers. It took until the 87th minute before their total dominance and superiority told on the scoreboard when Santalab popped up with the winner.

A deserved victory for the Western Sydney Wanderers, which combined with Adelaide defeating Brisbane earlier in the day sees the Wanderers cut the gap to the 1st placed Roar down to a mere 4 points, while extended their lead over Melbourne in 3rd to 6 points.

The Wanderers next match is on Tuesday the 14th of January, against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park in Melbourne.

Still can't believe people wear National jersey's to games FML leave that at home...

going off this weekend saw a lot of Croatian jerseys within the wanderers fans and a few Serbian jerseys within the Cove....

what im trying to say i guess is if you know someone that wears it to games ask them to leave it at home its better people come in with a black shirt then a National jersey

Seen plenty of Serb jerseys around during this and last season. No big deal really.
Yeah to be honest it doesnt really bother me. People wear Croatian jerseys, AC Milan jerseys - they have red in them.

Never an issue for me really - just reflective of our multicultural fan base.

Surely it's not what you wear, but how you act when you wear what you do?

    Who cares what people wear?

To be honest, people have a cry over the Croatian/Serbian jerseys yet would never bat and eye lid at an English jersey? Xenophobic much... and I'm even half pom!

Wear your RED AND BLACK... I don't care if someone turns up in a tablecloth or a Santa suit... it's red (or black) that's all that matters.

However, if someone wears a jersey to push a politic or personal agenda then that is an issue. In respect to the issue of people not affording jerseys, does that really matter? The fact that people turn up and support their team is what matters. I earn a decent coin, so does my wife, we have a nice big house, nice new car and still have a decent amount left over - that said, we still would balk at spending $200 for us to get jerseys (we already have though, but that's not the point)... we would have to reallocate money that could otherwise be used elsewhere, especially after buying season passes. It's easy to splash $100 without thought when mum and dad pay your bills or don't have a mortgage or kids to provide for.

What matters is that you're their for Andy when he needs you... erm I mean the Wanderers! (To much Toy Story  )

As long as they are not looking to cause any problems I don't see a problem in wearing national team jerseys of any sort. Wear it but keep any politics out of it. There hasn't been any problems to date so we might be making a big deal out of nothing.

How's about that goal then huh??!! ....nice bit of interplay between Hersi n Ono before the misshot, then great first time control by Santalab.Pity Hersis first half effort didn't go in, would've been a cracker.

Did hersis shot take a slight deflection or do I just need a stronger prescription?

I thought it hit the studs of the defender.. if you are talking about the Santalab assist.

While we are talking about kits, I'm currently watching the replay, if it's good enough for the smurfs to wear their home jersey at every derby then we should be wearing ours

Didn't even think of that but we definitely should be able to

    That's a really good point - I didn't even think of that.

    Gotta love the inconsistency, argh!

This is too true. Black is further away from sky blue than white is

Walked into work today. First thing I hear from a work colleague "I hear 6 people were evicted"

Be sure to turn the tables in league season. Just make up figures if you have to, catch him on the hop and show him what a dick he is

Maybe he calmed his celebration out of respect for scoring against his former club, like many players do.

That was my initial interpretation too, maybe someone needs to ask him?

I would love for someone to do the Lambeau Leap... or equivalent, right into the RBB.

Here's a theory from a drunk guy last night in the bus home from Parramatta:

If the RBB wasn't singing as loud as we did, the ball would've dropped quicker and went in the goal instead of hitting the crossbar.

     laffs were had
If that was on the bus to liverpool then that was me

Haha yeah man. Nice to meet ya!

Likewise. And drunk is an understatement

    • Just sharing.... Rumour via Reddit that Monty and the family want out of Scotland and to return to Oz..... would he suit the Wanders... can't see us dropping Jacko....
    • Is Doni Grdić that bad of a player, that Rudan refused to use him for the rest of the season, despite out defensive woes? Cluer in midfield, when he had Scicluna in the stands, also baffled me.  Antonsson got bullied off the ball, could not hold up play, rarely won a header... yet, Rudan persisted with him all year.  Pierias, probably a nice guy... but I think he is up there with Kubi Kwabena Appiah for the "heaps of pace, but no soccer brain" award.  In yet another season of plenty of disappointments, the player that did not come to the party (even prior to his injury) was Borello.  A Socceroo and our best player last season. His agent demanded big bucks and a long term deal... but he was poor. Injuries didn't help, but he was ordinary in pre-season and the games he did play.  Had we forked out the money for Layouni, we make the top 6 (then bundle out in the first week of semis)  Sigh!!
