  • Tale Of Two Halves In Parramatta Deadlock

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers and Wellington Phoenix played out a bruising 1 all draw at Parramatta Stadium tonight.

Seconds into the fixture a Hersi cross flashed across goal. Two Wanderers stretched for the ball but were unable to make the tap-in. Bridge stretched far enough to stab the ball toward goal but he saw the shot cleared off the line by a Wellington defender.

Western Sydney used their first substitution after 15 minutes as a result of a disgraceful aerial challenge by Maltese international Manny Muscat. Aaron Mooy had already headed the ball onward when Muscat came charging in with a flying elbow and shoulder, collecting the Australian midfielder in the head. The bruising illegal challenge would have resulted in a send off and several weeks on the sidelines if Muscat was playing against the Parramatta Eels in a league match was somehow punished with just a yellow card. Mooy was already knocked out when his head slammed against the Parramatta Stadium turf. After a long delay Mooy was replaced by Iacopo La Rocca.

The deadlock was broken when Wellington failed to heed the warning signs for leaving Polenz unmarked at corners. Polenz's first ever senior goal came after a headed clearance fell kindly for the fullback, and he volleyed toward goal. Wellington keeper Glen Moss couldn't react fast enough as the ball arrowed through a sea of legs and found the back of the net.

Wellington's wily manager Ernie Merrick had seen enough of the Wanderers domination and replaced the ineffectual Stein Huysegems with Jason Hicks on the half-hour, and followed that at half-time by replacing Kenny Cunningham with Phoenix talisman Paul Ifill. The changes had the intended effect as Wellington took the game to the Wanderers in the second half.

Against the run of play, and from a free kick, the Wanderers saw another Hersi cross flash across goal. It bamboozled everyone but Michael Beauchamp who had gambled with a run to the back post, but the captain couldn't lift his leg high enough for a tap-in from only centimeters out from goal.

Ante Covic kept his team from losing the lead with a remarkable double save in the 58th minute. When La Rocca failed to clear the ball fell to the feet of Wellington's hit-man Jeremy Brockie, Covic turning the thunderbolt away to the feet of Ifill, Covic scrambling forward to close the angle quickly and saving with his legs. Unfortunately for Covic his heroics went unrewarded as D'Apuzzo was left for dead by Ifill, as he delivered a killer ball to Brockie who finished smartly past Covic at the near post.

Both teams had their chances to steal all three points in the final quarter of the match. The 63rd minute saw Carlos Hernandez try to take Covic unawares. While standing deep on the left wing for the Phoenix, Hernandez fired in a wicked curling shot aimed at the top corner. Covic was up to the task and kept the shot away. Brendon Santalab then came within inches of the winner for Western Sydney, after a mazy run through midfield, he fired a shot that seemed destined for the top corner only to be denied by the woodwork.

The Wanderers next match is the Sydney Derby, at the Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday the 26th of October, against Sydney FC. Kick-off is at 7:45PM.

I have a pic of a guy who literally did not sing a word all game, and was on his phone just after the poznan. I imagine that status said "RBB POZNAN I'M FULL HOOLIGAN HECTIC #CORENETTO".... ****.... Thanks Turner and Kopite for standing in front of that guy.  And the fact that at one point I left 55 to try and pump up the back of 56 with a flag... Sigh... What is that even? What is that even? Like right behind the band. Not going off. Wow.

But if we sounded good on tv and for the players and the rest of the stadium that's all that matters...

I said to my mates before the game that I was worried about Wellington and I was right... They're a better team this year for sure, and with their internationals back this week I honestly think they deserved a draw with the way they worked. That being said, we should have won the game, the fact we didn't is disappointing...

    Can't comment much tactically lol.

I  was in the back of 55. It started out great but then there were about 4 blokes behind us who apparently got 'bored' of chanting. They then proceded to commentate the game/ruin the chants on purpose. Like in glorious everyone around me was losing their place beause they were yelling out the wrong words and we couldn't hear where everyone else was up to.

Apart from those guys though it was  great effort and an enjoyable first home game.

Really wanted the 3 points tonight.  The derby just took on another level of significance next week.  It's pretty clear that all the teams have improved and it's gonna be really tight this year...

Mooy getting injured hurt us (probably not as much as it hurt him) simply because La Rocca's touch and passing has left a lot to be desired so far this season. He lost possession a few times today. He along with D'Apuzzo stood out again for me today as needing to do better.

That muscat 'challenge' was a disgrace. If that was NRL Muscat would've been sent off because they would've seen it on video ref, and he'd get 2 or 3 weeks at least. Ball is miles away by the time the challenge comes in, and it's a shoulder charge to the Mooy's head.

Has anyone mentioned the fact that their goal was offside? Wasn't happy with the defensive effort though in the second half. It was as if the gates opened.

Then again if it paused at just the right moment Beauchamps fingernails may have kept him onside. Any team would love to have a Brockie

Also I enjoyed having half the NSW Police Force at the final intersection (Victoria-O'Connell) before the Stadium. About five cops on the side of the footpath where the road was ostensibly to stop those walking to the stadium from walking on the road (even though there are cars going there), and then another group of about four having a chat, and two more staring us down as we walked past. Two marshals at the actual intersection to guide cars through, another six Riot squad members at the intersection for the hell of it - and then about ten substitute police marshals on the other side of the road just watching.

    seriously?

Get over it. It's called crowd control. Seriously a lot of Pa Pa problems here. I'm so over it. Thanks to the cops crowd control and traffic management today I got out of the car park and home in record time to watch the replay. I hope it's like that every home game.

If you were at the Roxy you would understand some of the paranoia. Holy god that was so bad. That guy just wouldn't go away with the camera... When it popped up from behind the fence it was the most ludicrous thing I've ever seen. So unfunny that it was funny.

I would've just smiled. If it's getting to you guys, they have won. Seriously why would it bother you. I'm sure there is CCTV all throughout the Roxy, George St, and the rest of Parramatta taking as much footage for whatever they want any ways. Big Brother is everywhere these days, I don't particularly like it either however it's now just a part of life.
A family, FAMILY WITH YOUNG CHILDREN sitting quietly, isolated in the curved couches at the Roxy has a cop walk up to them and film them from a metre away, slowly, right to left. This IS NOT part of life and if you want it to be move to a police state Edited by matty

This needs to be clarified !

I don't think a lot of people understand what big brother is.

When i'm being filmed by security cameras at wanderland, westfields, roxy, etc. That isn't big brother... That's parramatta stadium, westfields and roxy filming me for security reasons to protect their material assets in the event that a crime has been commited on their premises.

When a "police officer" rocks up with his cam corder filing everyone in sight... Yes, even going out of his way to film the girls sitting around the corner, minding their own business, this is purely done to intimidate and instill fear.

Big brother isn't necessarily just a blanket term for being watched by anyone, or any camera. Big brother is a potentially faceless authority figure which does watch you, regardless of commiting a crime, or not, with the intention of making you feel afraid and paranoid enough that you are being watched constantly. So much that you won't commit a crime.

Where is this police footage being sent ?

How long is it being held ?

What is this footage being recorded for ?

    DON'T STEAL FLAGS

My 12 year old son chased a few people down to get our flags back.

Don't steal them they take a lot of time and effort to make and cost money.

If you leave them on the chairs when finished would be appreciated that way they will be there next week to wave and hold up.

    end of rant sorry

oh yeh great to be home again bring on the derby

your flags are frigin awesome and your a good dad.

What flags were yours? We had two guys at the back of 57 who asked for two and barely held them up. I asked to hold it and he said he had it. Same guy wouldn't sit down or turn around when instructed. Nor sing. Just thought it was better to yell at everyone to sing louder. I told him to cut that out and sing with us. He just goes "I am" which he wasn't. Not one song the whole game. Just was more worried about arguing with people. Curious if he had your flags.

I dont like it. Its annoying when ur calling out player names. They have plenty of other ways to advertise without it infiltrating the lead up to the game where we are creating atmopshere. But thats just my opinion.

Having it announced over the loudspeakers could be part of the package to make it more of an incentive to sponsor the players ?
