  • Wanderers To Tour China & Japan

    mack

Reports have surfaced this evening that the month-long gap in the Wanderers recently released pre-season schedule is to be filled with a tour of Japan & China.

The tour, taken with the financial support of the NSW Government, is in the words of Premier Barry O'Farrell, to "put Sydney on the global trade map."

The announcement was made at a Western Sydney regional address, and also discussed the Westconnex motorway, the Parramasala Festival, and other regional issues.

The Wanderers have yet to confirm the tour or schedule so stay tuned to social media and other news outlets, including WestSydneyFootball.com for more details as they come to hand.

This will be a great opportunity to push the Wanderers as a club into Asia, with Japanese superstar Shinji Ono sure to be the main attraction. The club will also gain valuable experience in playing and simply getting to Asia as it looks to prepare for it's inaugural tilt at the Asian Champions League later in the season.

Explains the massive gap between the Canberra Olympic and Melbourne Victory friendlies.

A great move nonetheless! It will be interesting to see how our boys fair against the Chinese and Japanese teams.

I wonder how they can get pre-season training with teams over there.. They're in the middle of their league that won't finish by end of November(CSL)/early December(J-L). Is there international fixture coming up soon?

Que? SFC just played a mid week friendly in Japan. Isn't it feasible WSW will do the same thing and play the teams mid week? Granted, the teams probably wont be at full strength, but their squads are much larger than ours.

In Japan, hopefully Popa can line up a friendly with his old team Sanfreece Hiroshima. And Ono can maybe line up games against Urawa and Shimizu. That would be epic.

Would you think there will be any chance at all the games will be televised?

We'd probably be able to find a stream. Maybe if we're lucky SBS will figure something out.

just stream the match from vipbox.

depends on the games being televised locally as well though.

if we play some lower team then i doubt itd be possible to see any of it.

Mack so it was just a gee up on your part to bitch in the other thread about the 4 week gap u knew all along haha

I had no idea about this.. well I suspected there would be a tour of some sort, but after the Menpora Cup plans were discredited, I wasn't sure any tour would happen this year. Then a few hours after the post about the pre-season fixtures, the Premier announced the Govt was going to support a Wanderers China/Asia tour, and thus I created the thread. :good:

I think this is a great idea, we sometimes get excited as wanderers fan when we get mainstream media exposure in Australia, what you don't hear much about is that the Final and I think also the semi were shown live on chinese state sport TV. Needless to say that is a huge audience, hopefully a few will come out for a match or buy a WSW shirt.

    Buy a WSW shirt?

The true measure of greatness is when they start making fake WSW merch over there! (although that may already be happening!)

Haha! Reminds me of going to the markets one time in Melbourne. I approach said dodgy-esque football jersey stall eyeing an Aston Villa jersey. Took a closer look at the badge which was a slightly wrong. I asked the chap if they were genuine or knock-offs? (knowing full well they were cheap rip offs) His response: "Yes sir! All genuine knock-offs!" I still don't know what he meant to this day...

Anyway, would be very surreal walking around the stalls in Bangkok or China seeing an Ono knock-off!

    Any more news on this?

It's fantastically coincidental that I'll be in China the entire month they are in Asia and it would be great to catch a game or two while I'm there!
