Australian National & Youth Teams Discussion V2

Recommended Posts

Now look forward to hearing about our young wanderers in the u19 afc Championship in Bahrain starting friday.

Unfortunately, the coach (Talay) is an ex-smurf and favours Blackwood over Scott.

i will give him one thing, he played all of our boys at some point in the AFF tournament. He was even sacrilegious in that he played a 3-5-2 formation in one game.

4 Wanderers in the starting lineup: Scott, Shabow, Youlley and Bandiera

Not sure if Maia or Baccus came on

Final score 1-0 with Shabow scoring the winner.

Now second in the group based on goals scored.

Keanu Baccus came on a sub, Tariq Maia sat on the bench.

Based on the team sheet, Talay is a rebel. The formation was 4-2-4

Here's the official AFC teamsheet/ match report.

Young Socceroos on tomorrow morning at 3.30am playing Uzbekistan who also won their first group stage match.

Talay apparently played 4-3-3 with Gombau overseeing and Rudan as assistant.

Blackwood had to play midfield against China PR with Lachlan Scott starting as preferred striker.

Crap performance, defense leaked like a sieve.

3 nil down after 46 mins, then their captain gets sent off & Scott is an used sub.

We play the entire game with deadwood masquerading as a #9, is it any wonder both our goals came from the penalty spot. Talay is a muppet.

Kuzi appears to have done a knee, as he was trying to change direction after a stepover.

The starting team had the following defenders: 2 NPL smurfs (Mutch and Timotheu) plus Thomas Deng with Bandiera.

MF were Liam Rose (CCM) with Youlley and Shabow

Forwards were Kuzmanovski, Smurf Blackwood and Champness (Roar)

Not sure who Talay (ex-smurf) brought on. Dropped Lachlan Scott from the starting line up.

No choice now to start him.

Thomas Deng wore the armband & was among our worst performers on the night. Looked completely out of his depth.

Our front 3 of Champness, Deadwood & Prasad (who replaced Kuzi 15') offered nothing in attack.

Deng has not started a competitive match in Holland. Obviously not match fit, picked on reputation.

Team sheet shows Tariq Maia came on as sub.

Both Scott and Baccus unused subs.

at least Youlley scored a penalty.

Unfortunately, Talay can pick Blackwood.

In one game Talay had Baccus and O'Toole as CBs in the AFF U19 and that worked.

Young Socceroos lose five-goal thriller in Bahrain

Wednesday, 19 October 2016

John Greco @Grecs7
The Young Socceroos have been defeated in their second group game at the AFC U-19 Championships, losing in a five-goal thriller to Uzbekistan overnight in Bahrain.

Despite late goals from Wanderer Liam Youlley and Sydney FC's George Blackwood, Australia weren’t able to complete an incredible fightback, going down 3-2 at the Khalifa Sports City Stadium.

The defeat means Ufuk Talay’s side has dropped to third in Group D, level on points with Tajikistan.

The Young Socceroos face Tajikistan in their final group match on Friday, with the winner to book their spot in the quarter finals.

The young Aussies need to reach the semi-finals of this tournament to qualify for next year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea.

WHAT THEY SAID

"Tonight we got punished for our mistakes. I still think we played quite well at times and we weren’t clinical enough in front of goal and we had chances to score,†the Young Socceroos boss said.

“Of course we’re never happy losing games but we have everything to play for in the next game.

"I think Uzbekistan’s structure defensively was quite good and we found it hard to get behind them. It was because of our defensive errors that we conceded goals.

“It was one of those games where we didn’t create enough and we weren’t clinical enough, but that’s football."

INJURY BLOW

The Young Socceroos were dealt an early blow when attacker Steve Kuzmanovski was forced off with a knee injury.

Just before the half hour mark Uzbekistan took the lead through Bobir Abdixolikov, before a brace either side of the break to Doston Ibragimov made it 3-0.

RED CARD

But a red card to Islomjon Kobilok 11 minutes into the second half swung the momentum and the Young Socceroos came roaring back.

LATE GOALS

Youlley cut the deficit from the penalty spot on 63 minutes and despite huge spells of pressure, the Young Socceroos had to wait until injury-time to score again via another penalty, this time converted by Blackwood.

But the Aussies ran out of time to find an equaliser a now face a winner-takes-all clash with Tajikistan to reach the last eight.

For the next WCQ against Thailand Brad Jones is looking like he should be starting Goalkeeper for the Senior Team.

8 clean sheet in a row including yesterday's Champion's League game.

time to p*** o** Federici.

And with no game time for Ryan at Valencia, the competition should be between Langerak and Jones. Missing one start for Ryan won't hurt him.

Former Mariner Kalik plays his first game and gets himself 2 yellows.

At least Scott (off at 59') started but Talay did not play Shabow (subbed on 47') to feed him from midfield.

Maia and Baccus did not play.

Youlley played DM and Bandiera was subbed on when Kalik was sent off.

Up to the last 2 games, Smurf Talay had a better record than Postecoglou.

Where's the smarts in using NPL combinations?

Talay is a muppet. #UfukOut

FFA continue to deflect, rather than deal with our failings at youth level.

Rudes did the post match interview, hopefully he assumes the coaching role going forward.

Heartbreak for Young Socceroos at AFC U-19 Championship

Saturday, 22 October 2016

Staff writer

The Young Socceroos have missed out on reaching the knock-out phase of the AFC U-19 Championship on goal difference after a stalemate against Tajikistan overnight.

Australia’s U-20 side knew only a win from their final Group D match would suffice in Bahrain, in order to join Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals but were unable to find a decisive goal.

They certainly had their chances against a resolute defence, with the Aussies awarded a penalty in the fifth minute for handball in the box.

Despite Anthony Kalik driving his effort into the bottom left corner, the goalkeeper guessed the right way and was able to make an excellent diving save.

It was one-way traffic as the half progressed, with Jake Brimmer forcing the keeper to tip the ball over the bar with a curling long range effort.

Australia thought they had the goal they craved just after the interval when Lachlan Scott was able to bundle the ball into the back of the net but he was controversially ruled offside.

Substitute George Blackwood carved out an excellent chance when he was able to beat the offside trap but unfortunately he sent his shot across the face of goal.

The 2010 runners-up were denied again when a fierce shot from Kalik was followed up by Joseph Champness but the keeper was again able to make a fingertip save.

The task became more difficult when Kalik was shown a red card for a second bookable offence and while the Aussies continued to toil with 10-men they were unable to break the deadlock.

The result meant that Tajikistan progressed at Australia’s expense, with the prize of a place at next year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup in Korea Republic also alluding Ufuk Talay’s side.

"It was a one-sided game. We had a penalty in the fifth minute and if we had scored, the whole game would have changed,†said assistant coach Mark Rudan post-match.

“We created enough opportunities to win two or three games today and we just didn't finish them off. That's what's disappointing.

"Otherwise we executed the gameplan. I feel for the players in the dressing room because they deserved to go to the next round and hopefully it's a learning curve for the players."

Meh.

Apart from the odd "golden generation", results at youth level rarely relate to senior results anyway. Outside of world youth cups/Championships, I'd prefer the boys to lose and get their arses back in the red and black.

(This wasn't a youth world cup qualifier as well was it??)

On another note - We're going to be in Bangkok for work when the Qualifier v Thailand is on.

It was going to be cancelled due to the death of their king but has now been allowed to go ahead..

With these conditions.

The FFA has asked Australian supporters to be respectful of the local customs, while providing the following list of requests from the Sports Authority of Thailand:

  • Clothing for spectators shall be in polite manner with suggested colours such as white, black, grey and preferably with no designs on them.
  • Equipment such as drums, trumpets, flags, megaphones, whistles, cheering sticks and any other equipment will not be allowed to enter the stadium.
  • Spectators are not allowed to show any symbols.
  • Banners will not be allowed to enter the stadium.
  • Fan chants, along with any other activities that are considered joyful, are strictly prohibited both inside the stadium and surrounding areas.

In essence: Socceroos fans may attend the game but should not chant, show off banners and flags, or wear the green and gold.

Might not bother, don't want to end up in the Bangkok Hilton...

Bit late on this, but not going to lose any sleep over the kids' results. Think I've already posted on this issue before, but bottom line is that historically youth football success outside the usual suspects for football success (e.g. Germany, Argentina, France, Brazil etc) doesn't translate to success in senior football. We've seen countries like Nigeria, Kuwait and even our own junior teams from years ago win U-17, U-19, U-21 World Cups, continental trophies etc and yet none of these 2nd tier football countries have translated their success at these competitions into transitioning to the higher tiers of senior men's football.

If we are talking about measuring the quality and direction of our football on the basis of these junior comps and failures therein, then I guess folk will get all nervy and upset. However right now, when one looks at the current young generation of Socceroos who have won the AFC Cup and look to be on track for yet another WC Final qualification, well I don't recall the likes of Mooy, Ryan, Luongo, Juric etc coming home laden down with U-17 or Joeys trophies.
