  • 7 Goal Thriller Ends With Santa Winner

    mack

The Wanderers survived a late fright to jump 5 points clear in the Premiership race with a 4-3 win against Melbourne City tonight.

Western Sydney came into the 1v2 contest knowing they had yet to really hit their attacking stride, and City were on the back foot early as key central defender Patrick Kisnorbo went off with an injury. 10 minutes in Vidosic had the first real chance of the game, as a cross from Nichols took a slight deflection by Osama Malik that knocked the ball into Vidosic's chest.

Bruno Fornaroli should have opened the scoring in the 12 minute after being played in by Harry Novillo. Instead of the clinical finishing people had come to expect, he instead put a toepoke just wide.

Mitch Nichols made them pay, as he & Bridge combined on the half-hour mark. Bridge took receipt of a neat pass from Andreu, before laying a cute through ball for Nichols, who took a touch to evade the defence before rolling the ball past Thomas Sorensen. The 1-0 lead was taken into the break but the general feeling was that it would be a matter of time before more goals would flow for the league leaders.

The Bridge & Nichols combination doubled the Wanderers lead, this time with Nichols turning provider, his break down the right flank turning the City defence around. Bridge used a Vidosic run as a decoy, stopped in his tracks to receive a cutback from Nichols before blasting a powerful strike into the top right corner.

The 3rd was another Nichols & Bridge special, Nichols chipping Sorensen who had flown out to the edge of the area but missed completely, Bridge guaranteeing the goal with a tap-in from a meter out.

Melbourne City are a team noted for their individual brilliance in attack, and they began a comeback through Novillo who took on Topor-Stanley and finished with a pin-point shot to the back post, the second from Fornarolli who scored another of his trademark no lift curling shots into the corner.

Anthony Caceres, who joined Melbourne City on loan from global powerful Manchester City killed his new sides chances of taking anything from the game with his dismissal in the 85th minute, two yellow cards accrued from awful challenges.

Brendan Santalab gave Western Sydney more breathing room with his 89th minute tap-in, Romeo Castelen breaking the static City defensive line before working the angles for a cut-back to the unmarked Wanderers striker. City scored a late consolation through Erik Paartalu, who got the faintest of touches onto a City free kick, but it was too little too late for the his side.

The Wanderers head down to Melbourne next weekend for a Saturday clash with Melbourne Victory.

How are these people even getting the reception to be sending messages and snapchats?

They're the ones clogging the bandwidth. They get best plans, with a phone that transmit deathly amounts of radioactivity. All so they can send videos of themselves in the RBB LOL

What a night! Rollercoaster of a game but I came home with a smile on my face.

Btw, for those in the active area...I forgot to take my bag with me home after the game. Is there a chance that someone might've seen a black backpack in 56 after full time?

No bag... just realised who you are though I think! Have you asked Stevo he would be better placed to spread word around that area to see if anyone picked it up...

Yeah that's me...I also gathered who you are from Stevo's post. FMD you sunk into that guy with the phone! There have been a few times I've yelled at people for not participating in chants and stuff, but when you got into him the poor fella looked like he was about to be killed.

    saw red

don't get how anyone could just rock up into the middle of 56 and get out their phone and start filming well into season 4...

I informed him if he didn't want to participate there were plenty of other places to practice photography and or use electronic messaging systems

That was you! I was another row or two behind, I stopped for a moment because I thought something was going down, then I realised you were just trying to get him active haha. You are right, it us ridiculous that someone would consider coming into 56 and not be active.

Redders was good IMO, punched the ball off Mooys right boot as he wound up to volley them ahead early on and smothered a Fornaroli chip immediatly after our 3rd goal, turned out Fornaroli was offside but redders didn't know that when he saved.

I believe Sotirio was brought in as a defensive move. MC wing backs caused a great deal of trouble in their last game this time...not so much. Sotirio was a big part of that. I didn't understand his selection immediately when i got the text but had made sense of it by kick off, Castlen just wouldn't have been able to deliver in an attacking sense against the city line up for that long.

This is also why Vidosic tired early. A number of times he chased down franic or Zullo and he and mitch were regularly found back in our own Goal box when they countered.

Our attack really clicked also which is great to see after the wastfulness against the mariners. Mitch and Bridge get the plaudits because they scored and assisted but Vidosic was delivering the ball prior to the assist.

    ****'s sake.

We're 3-0 up and we concede one, every **** goes quiet.

You're still 2 goals up so keep singing/clapping/jumping/whatever and spur on the blokes kicking the ball around.

******* over all these people who go silent when a goal is scored. You sing regardless.

Anyway, Caceras being sent for an early siesta made it easier for us to get the 4th we needed.

We should have ended the game with 4 nil. Some errors cost us goals and our goalie. hmmmm

First goal maybe he could have done something but you have to look at the defending & quality of the shot. Second goal was unstoppable & third goal was just an inch perfect ball from Mooy. In all honesty I thought he had a fantastic game.

I must admit that once the second goal went in the stands were very very nervous, any chanting & involvement was cut out. I guess that's the issue with the stands, they don't always get involved & go hard the whole game.

I normally hate it when the commentator says 'they've silenced the crowd' when we play because we never stop singing. But when they scored the second goal I physically could not speak. It was the strangest thing.

My life flashed before my eyes

A 1v2 in the NRL or AFL would be getting wall to wall coverage on tv, radio & print and massive advertising.

This is the main point. There was next to no coverage AT ALL in the papers leading up to this game. WSW are coming first with great football and get next to no print and radio attention week in and week out.

They'd rather focus on $#!tcun7 drunken bogan NRL players in the off season.

The entire city should have known this game was on. Unfortunately, only HAL fans knew.

Best part of this win was the salty tears from the City fans, they genuinely believe they're going to destroy us next time we meet.

Maybe if they spent less time lining up their Adidas shoes for an ultraz selfie and more time realising their defence is **** they might understand why they leak goals.

First goal you definitely have to look at the quality of defending and the shot. Most people know that keepers are taught to cover their near post and attackers are taught to hit it across goal so that if the keeper palms it away it could fall to a teammate. It was Topor's job to cut the angle and force the shot to go near post, straight to the keeper. He let Novillo get too far ahead of him, and then Novillo hit an incredible shot right to the inside of the far post. Not Redmayne's fault at all.

    Second goal, forget about it.

Third, perhaps he could have stayed at home, but funnily enough that is what everyone has been complaining about. Also, the marking was shocking - Santalab? - and the delivery was in a difficult spot.

Just watched the video of the game. F8rk me, Sotirio plays like the second coming of Appiah.

And Bridgey was lucky not to get red carded in the first half.

Wonder if the Guardian would publish their articles... Always class.

They do occasionally but pretty sure they're happy to have control themselves.
Seem to share a few writers I have seen Joe Gorman and Kate Cohen write for both. Edited by StringerBellend

The journal made a lot of writers get the attention necessary to get offered jobs on the larger platforms. Pretty sure Joe Gorman is the editor of the Leopold Method also.

Speaking of Joe Gorman. There's a great podcast interview of him on Behind the Game

I blame the FFA and the A League clubs for lack of publicity on radio, papers and tv.
