  • Tales Of Two Halves In Roar Draw

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers travelled to Brisbane for a Christmas-Eve Eve clash with the Roar, despite hoping to get back on track after a draw & loss following the World Cup break they let the Roar back into the match in the second half with the score at full time a 1-1 draw.

Brisbane's marquee signing Charlie Austin departed the club for family reasons, leaving the Roar without their only multiple goal scoring player so far. Marko Rudan elected to retain the same starting lineup that lose 1-0 to Western United, including keeping the faith with wayward striker Suleman Krpic. As the two teams prepared for kick-off, a nitpicking official decided to inject themselves into the story by causing a 5 minute long delay due to Marcelo having a taped up ring that stubbornly wouldn't come off.

Eventually the game got underway, 7 minutes in the Wanderers created a chance down the right flank with Amalfitano and Cleur combining and giving the fullback a crossing opportunity. It was clipped in to the middle of the penalty area, Krpic was having to run backward to make contact and he couldn't get clean contact on target.

In the 17th minute an almighty goalmouth scramble resulted from a Wanderers corner, with Oli Bozanic & Tomislav Mrcela denied by desperation goal-line clearances. Bozanic wouldn't be denied a minute later, after the clearance was returned back toward the area Krpic was strong and held off his defender to give it to Borrello with a neat short pass that let him sum up the opportunity. Bozanic was steaming into the area unmarked, the cutback was precise and Bozanic couldn't miss to make it 1-0 giving the visitors a deserved lead.

Brisbane had their best chance of the half thus far with a simple cross from the right wing, curled into the centre by fullback Jack Hingert, striker Joe Knowles found the gap between Mrcela and Marceleo and made nice contact with a header but aimed it over the bar, a chance that perhaps their now gone marquee Austin would have buried.

10 minutes before the break Ngbakoto had a shot on target from a free kick, he couldn't keep it down and it grazed the top of the net. Brisbane went down the other end and Mileusnic got in behind but Knowles made his run to the near post and Mileusnic made his cut-back to the middle of the area, a miscommunication that cost at the very least a shot on target if not a goal.

The offside flag came to the rescue of Brisbane seconds before the break, Borrello was in acres of space, cut inside and finished a wicked grass cutter into the far bottom corner. A cursory VAR check confirmed the offside call and the two sides went into the break with the match in the balance at 1-0. The opening of the second half was much like the first with the Wanderers dominant, and Warren Moon didn't wait long before going for his bench to bring on Riku Danzaki.

Brisbane had another good heading chance, this time from a 58th minute corner. Armiento floated an in-swinger onto the edge of the 6 yard box, it kept Lawrence Thomas rooted to his goal line as Courtney-Perkins rose above Marcelo but once again the Roar couldn't keep their header on target, it worried Thomas but he wasn't required to make a save and it flew over the bar. Cleur picked up a card for an un-necessary professional foul on Danzaki on half-way.

Totally against the run of play Armiento had the Roar level he took what seemed like an aimless shot on target from a long distance that Thomas would have had easily covered until the ball swerved viciously before it reached him, beating him all ends up and leaving the keeper flapping at air. Romain Amalfitano looked to stop the rot in the 72nd minute, hoping for a carbon copy of the Roar goal by smashing it at Jordan Holmes, unfortunately it didn't swerve out of nowhere like the Roar shot did, but it did give the Wanderers a corner for Daniel Wilmering to take, with Marcelo giving away a foul at the back post to relieve the pressure.

Rudan reacted to the Roar's overtaking of the game by bringing on Aidan Simmons and Nathaniel Blair in exchange for Ngbakoto and Krpic then before the start of stoppage time he threw on Alessandro Lopane and Ramy Najjarine for Borrello and Amalfitano. The Roar had a heart stopper in the 91st minute, Cleur crossed to the back post, Holmes spilled the ball in the wet conditions under pressure from Najjarine, it took a last ditch intervention from Scott Neville to turn the ball out for a corner that came back into the 6 yard box where Marcelo headed over.

Adama Traore flashed a long shot wide of the post in the final seconds of the game, with the resulting goal kick the final action of the match, a strong comeback from Brisbane to keep the game at 1-1. Roar's point propelled them up to 5th place and the Wanderers was of little consequence after throwing away a potential league leading lead.

The Wanderers next match is on New Year's Day the 1st of January 2023 against Macarthur FC, in Parramatta with kick-off at 5pm.

    We.Need.A.Striker. ASAP

Well at least we survived for a point.

Lack of depth and injuries is telling isn't it.

We are not a bad squad.

    Our defence is ok.

Our attack....well I think Rudan needs to get out the dictionary to see what the word actually means.

This was the perfect game to give our sub striker more than 5 minutes.

First half was pretty good second half not as good.
I am glad we have maintained our defensive cohesion over the WC break but it appears we still don’t have the best attack. I’m sure Rudan would have worked on it - needs to do more.

Pressure on next week at home, just moreso luck at moment that results mean we are still near top of table.

I don’t think having at least one strikers who can put the ball in the back of the net is asking too much. Can we all write to Santa to give the wanderers a striker.

They'll' most probably end up getting someone from the CFMEU.

    Brendon Santalab.

Leave him up there. He’ll still find the net 😉 and maybe a couple of yellows 😁

Rudan confirmed in the press conference that he'll be bringing in a player for the front attacking third when the window opens.

I actually thought we played pretty well. More energy and intensity that against WU. Defence is great and Cleur is getting much better with his crosses. Bozanic was terrific and means there is now very strong competition in midfield. Sure they came at us in the second half but last year’s team would have folded like Bunnings chair and we would have lost.

As everyone says the problem is up front although I thought we made more chances than we usually do. I am actually starting to feel sorry for Krpic now. Clearly starting to feel the pressure - although it was his clever pass that set up the goal. You feel he is now trying too hard. It would obviously help him if some of the other attacking players were scoring. Anyway let’s see what the transfer window brings. Ronaldo is still looking for a club.

Also confirmed Ninko and yengi back next week so now with Yeni and Oli in the mix, competition for spots really hots up.

Yeni for me initial impressions for me looks sharp but not sure how impactful he will be. Not sure what others think but for someone we were hoping was missing piece it doesn’t seem that way but see how he goes with Ninko feeding him.

How Krpic interacts with Ninko is key isn't it. The quality Ninko has around the box is a dream for a CF, slide pass here and a dink there. He should be feeding off that quality. Not seen too much of that so far when Ninko has been in..but time yet.

I hope the optimists are right and I really hope Kripic comes good he seems like a great person and he is trying which is more than can be said for a lot of imports. But he is missing absolute sitters, if we had a goal slotter we'd be top right now

To be honest he couldn't hack it in Korea, a league that Taggart destroyed. Should have been a good indication he wasn't up to the task.

We'd have a tasty line up with the 500k-ish spent on him and Antonis spent on a proper striker.

Instead again we are starting down the barrel of needing to replace at least 4 aging players at the end of the season. And I'd be fine with that if we scraped into the AFC cup, but that looks like very unlikely

And what’s wrong with that? At least we (yes I am a member)  know how to get results!

Was it a tale of wo halves? while we had the better of the first half Brisbane had some really good chances and were always threatening. 2nd half we dropped off as we usually do that let Roar take the control for a good 30 minutes.

I think Teams have seen we favour the right side with Cleur and Borello and have found a way to block and limit our ability to make chances on that side. And we are not creating anything of not on the left hand side since Yengi has been injured which means we aren't stretching the opposition defense. We need to get more from Traore and Yeni. Hopefully Bozanic gets fit quickly without Ninkovic he really does control the midfield for us on the attacking side, but was clearly gassed by half time and rightfully hooked at 60 minutes.

We actually started to create a few chances when Rudan made changes post 75 minutes but maybe they came too late, especially Lopane and Najjarine comming in at the 87 minute. A small note on Wilmering looks like the club has decided he should be a LM. Showed he has defensive frailties that haven't got better but has a good cross on him, when he came on we did start to stretch Brisbane, probably with more time could have made more of it but could also be down to Roar tiring.

We need to win against Macarthur 2nd vs 3rd and we have been pulled back into the pack 3 points ahead of 6th placed Newcastle.

Gonna be a tough game. They looked good the other night, albeit against SFC with lazy defence. Can't give them time - especially Devilla and on his left foot.

Willmering ain't going to make it, to slow to play wing to lightweight for a fullback shame he has a decent cross on him, although I still think we have ruined him, he geniuelly looks scared to play the ball forward

How bad were Sydney's defence, my favourite but is Grant being a mile out of position then jogging back, and berating others...he's one bad biff him

We will see. The change is recent its only 3 games. Reality is Rudan has his team and he has to make it work for the players he has available. I think its more worrying for someone like Najjarine who is now behind Wilmering when bringing on the first sub. And I can't blame Rudan for dropping Remi down the pecking order, he hasn't done anything, aside from the Everton game which was always a write off.

Yep and I've banged on about it, but sums our problem up 92nd 1-1 Remi gets the ball on the edge of box and instead of running into the box or making space.fo shoot, plays a training ground passing drill pass to the full back who then lashes it
