  • Youthful Exuberance Can't Avoid Defeat

    mack

The bottom of the table contest between the Wanderers & Newcastle ended with Newcastle taking all three points in a scrappy but hard fought face.

Having just returned from their 0-0 draw in Korea and with another mid-week away fixture in Brisbane to come, manager Tony Popovic elected to send out one of the youngest starting lineups in A-League history. Daniel Alessi, Jonathan Aspropotamitis, Yianni Perkatis, Jaushua Sotirio, Alusine Fofanah & Steve Kuzmanovski all starting alongside Ante Covic, Iacopo La Rocca, Sam Gallaway, Jason Trifiro & Nick Kalmar.

Perkatis stepped up to provide the opening chance of the game for Sotirio. Perkatis latched onto a misplaced pass by Kantarovski, then launched a defence splitting through ball that put Sotirio clear through on goal, but his first touch took him wide and allowed Daniel Mullen to making a diving block that saw the ball deflect off the ex-Wanderers defender and hit the side netting.

Newcastle took the lead in the 21st minute, taking advantage of a horrendous goalkeeping error from Ante Covic. Edson Montano played in Enver Alivodic on the edge of the box. Ante Covic came flying out of his area and completely missed both the ball and man, giving Alivodic a saloon passage to take a composed touch before firing into the unguarded goal.

What made headlines around the world wasn't the eventual result, but a moment in the 31st minute with one of the most ludicrous offside decisions ever made in Australia, rivalling the "offside from a throw in" in a match between Brisbane & Melbourne Heart several years ago. Daniel Alessi was beaten for pace by Hoole, who delivered a cross that neither Covic or Aspropotamitis could clear. It bounced through the central defender to Montato for a tap-in, only for Sarah Ho running the lines to inexplicably raise the flag for offside. Montato was not just behind three Wanderers players (La Rocca, Covic & Aspropotamitis) but he was behind the ball player!

Just before half-time another error from Covic let Ki-Je Lee double the Jets advantage. A nicely worked overlapping run from Lee saw Gallaway up against two attackers, and when Andrew Hoole eventually released the Korean he arced in on goal then blasted a shot that had Covic committing the cardinal sin of goalkeeping, allowing himself to be beaten at his near post.

5 minutes after the break Nick Kalmar pulled a goal back for Western Sydney, converting a free kick over the wall and leaving Ben Kennedy standing on his heels with no chance of a save. He had another free kick chance from an almost identical position but this time he only found the side netting. Newcastle killed the game in the last 5 minutes very effectively, closing out the game with the Wanderers not having any real clear cut chances to score an equaliser.

The Wanderers are now back on the bottom of the A-League ladder and have been mathematically eliminated from the finals race. With 6 games to play the club are 19 points behind Melbourne City, and winning all 6 matches would see the Asian Champions reach 29 points.

The Wanderers next match is against Brisbane Roar, on Wednesday March 25th, in Brisbane.

I just went back in time and imagined the first game against The Mariners and that on and off the pitch we have come so far. Then I opened my eyes to what took place today and found it hard to take much that looked positive. Others have well documented the many serious reasons why what happened today did but the defending in the first half made a seriously inept team look good. On a bright note it feels good not to be fashionable and we will come back against The Roar and beat The Glory.

Overall some real positives with Kuzi, Sotirio and Aspro.

Covic now must be dropped and Deano installed as #1

    Our formation sucks balls

Stick with Covic ahead of Bouzanis. Dean Bouzanis isn't up to it.

Mate at some point every player has to be held accountable. Even Covic . If he isn't held to account then players will feel that there is rules for some and rules for others.

You make a change to make an improvement. Even in his current form, Ante Covic is better than Dean Bouzanis. Bouzanis had a run in the team and was poor. There's a reason why he couldn't get a game in League Two......

I think bouzanis should have had the game today , covic needed the rest and bouzanis needed to stake a claim after covics return to form in seohl otherwise if he is not pressing for the spot when the number one keeper is struggling ,no use in keeping him. If that makes sense.

    :nono:

He actually said was he doesn't think Spira will be fit but if the Socceroos think he is fit want him then they can take him.

    Quality journalism.

I think second part was about tomi, not spira.
I thought he was talking about Spira but I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong. Regardless, like Ange gives a **** what a club says if he wants that player in his squad. Edited by smp

Popa said in the post-match conference he considered hooking Alessi even earlier. That's two hookings in a row, and the lad must be really fragile right now. He needs to be looked after or we risk setting him back years. Popa said after the first hooking that Ron Corry hooked him a few times as a youth trying to break through into the first team, so I hope Ron's going to have a quiet word in both Popa's and Daniel's ears about how to work through this and become stronger.

He showed so much promise last season. Be a shame to burn him out now.

in my opinion he didnt look right ...physically or mentally...caught out in the first 30 sec for their 1 v1...that then set the tone for his insipid performance...

going off his debut performances i think the kid has potential but...

i was impressed with fofannah and kuzi...sautirio ...has potential...but for me was played out of position today..he is better facing fwd than with his back to goal ......and the chances he missed in the first half i think proved that..

In an attempt to ignore the result I'm going to point out the highlights of the evening:

    - Kuz, Fofanah and Aspro showed plenty

    - Golec warming up to the beat of La Banda drums

    - watching Castelen's kid go on post game, run the ball down to the rbb end, score, and celebrate

I just dont know why Covic have to rush out of his box for the first goal when our defenders had those 2 Newcastle players covered.

He's making a habit in the back end of this season of ill-advised excursions out of the box. I'm worried about and for him. I know he has a history of brain snaps but he has been so solid while he's been with us. Something ain't right. In Ron We Trust.

    Also, their fans were dismal.

They looked like rejects from a jazz club with the kangol caps and braces & trying to bait the South terrace with 5 fans trying to chant.

FYI the people in the south are families, the others up the North end will turn you into fertiliser given half a chance...

I think there are some young guys there who have potential, but most of them only played good for one half. In the second half they were getting pushed off the ball and we had limited chances to score. I think we should keep persisting with these young guys as the combinations in the first half were there, better than I've seen us pass the ball around for some time.

When did paper airplanes came into our games?

They;re major hazard, i almost got my eyeball poked out last week by that.

Waiting till Martin Lo get selected to debut A-league. We will have some creative midfield for the empty space we have most time. Kalmar performance overall today was a shocker. too many incomplete passes.

I think Kalmar's problem is that he just lopes around the field. No turn of speed to be able to surprise. Still no one is worse than Golec.

On FIFA Kalmar only has 49 pace
