    • The Bradford stadium disaster and then the Hillsborough disaster a few years after was the end of the majority of top flight stadiums, or old stands. The stands down the sides at Ayresome both had timber flooring and wooden seats, and I shudder looking back at all the people smoking and the rubbish piled up, it’s amazing there weren’t more Bradford style disasters really. The terraces at both ends had chunks falling out and rust holes in the roofing. What I remember the most as a very young kid in the mid 80’s was the very tall perimeter fencing with spinning spikes on the top. My first experience of watching football was looking through a metal fence. The street around Ayresome were all very narrow cobbled streets for terraces housing that backed very close to the stadium. To redevelop would have mean knocking houses down. The capacity had been reduced over the years from 50,000 to around 22,000 at the end due to it being so unsafe. We loved the pace but knew it was time to go. When the stadium was closed and in the process of being knocked down we went down with a ball and climbed over the security fencing and played on the old pitch which was covered with various bits of stand that had been pulled down. It was the Boro, the security fellas didn’t do anything to stop you lol
    • Agree with all this but unfortunately there is also bullshit like fire and safety risks and a lot of these older places aren't built to "the required modern standard". I know these moves are always done for money/revenue reasons but some of them simply aren't sustainable for another hundred years.
