Last night, Dad had a fall while getting up to go to the toilet. Being dark, and he being blind (he has about 4% vision in one eye) and with his dementia, he really has no idea where he is heading, even though the bathroom door is about 1.5 metres away from his side of the bed. He hit his head during the fall.

He's now in Westmead hospital. Has had a CT scan and it showed some bleeding from the brain. They've taken him off his warfarin and reversing it to try and stem the bleeding. He'll have another CT scan tomorrow to check the success of that.
Saddest thing is that no one can visit him. Not even my sister who is the primary carer. Not at this stage anyway.

I've rung my mum twice today to check on her welfare and both times she was in tears. She's getting good care though from the facility she is in. We can't visit her to support her either.
Covid sucks because when people like these are at a moment in their lives where they need loved ones around them, it's forbidden. They need us to hold their hand and offer love, comfort and support and it's not possible.

Dad is lucid, but laying in a hospital bed alone - probably not even knowing where he is, with no chance of any loving human contact from his family.

It makes me so sad.

145 new cases today

51 in community for all infectious period

25 in community for part of infectious period

Seems the reports that we won't be out of lockdown till Sept are about right at the moment.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-07-20/nsw-lockdown-needs-to-run-to-september-for-delta-cases-to-drop/100307698

I don’t think news like that will go down well in the current Sydney climate.

Some good news from the UK. Case numbers falling following reopening and the link between covid and hospitalisations continuing to be broken.

There is expected to be another spike in cases in a week or two following the freedom day.

Its very tentative still, but small encouraging signs.

Let's hope everyone continues to do their duty to protect themselves and most importantly others by getting vaccinated. You can read shitloads of research but the fact is vaccines save lives, pure and simple.

Yesterday 42 of the 43 people in intensive care in NSW were unvaccinated. That’s 97.7%.

How do we hammer figures like that into the thick skulls of those idiots who were out on their super-spreader “freedom” marches over the weekend?

Don't you know it's all lies and these people in hospital are paid actors?

There is no reasoning with people who are deep enough into their paranoia.

I spoke to someone today who explained to me in great details that

a) there is no Delta variant

b) the people who are dying are killed by the vaccine (in their thousands!)

c) there are no sick people in hospital ICUs

d) wearing masks is the real health hazard

f) politicians, mainstream media, police, health officials are all complicit in this conspiracy, and will need to face court once the "good people" have taken back this country

g) this hoax is designed to form a world government, and we are all being demoted to non essential eaters

That person keeps telling me "I am not an anti vaxxer but" and "I am not a conspiracy theorist but".

That person is entitled to their opinion. However, there can be no doubt that this spirit that was on display last weekend.

This is a solidified belief system that has religious undertones. It is beyond debate.

Disturbing and frightening in equal measure.

It’s frightening how far and how embedded these theories have gone. It’s like there’s no such thing as critical thinking and the trust in institutions that’s used to have high trust like health have vanished. It weighs heavy on me that we are in this place.

Two observations - both pretty obvious, of course.

1. The internet changed everything. People now have access to an almost an infinite selection of information - credible and from less reliable sources. In the past - where did you access more in depth information about any thing you wanted to know? From a text book, or an encyclopedia etc Now, anyone can ferret out a great deal more info from whatever sources.  More specialised "knowledge" was generally the domain of the highly educated, the "experts" if you like, and they were respected. Not any more.

2. Now, with the "research" made possible on the internet, anyone can become an "expert",  in their own minds at least. Many of these "researchers" consider that they are  the independent thinkers, or the critical thinkers. And people who "trust the experts" are the ones without the ability to think for themselves.

The genie is out of the bottle, as you observed above, and it changes everything. I have no idea where it ends up.

With people stupid enough to put their trust in non educated experts, influencers religous nutters or media personalities with an agenda, and dismiss proper science or scientific research which in the long term  re covid may cost them their lives. If they don't get vaccinated they will eventually catch the disease die off and blame someone else for it.....stupidity does have a price.

Yes Wendy, there is news and it is good.

Bleeding was stemmed, Westmead were happy with his progress today and have released him.

He is now happily back with mum in their aged care facility, although I suspect that by this time tomorrow, he won't even remember the whole incident.

It was good news though, and I'd just like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts, comments and pm's. It meant a lot to me to have that support from my caring WSW's family.

I'm glad your dad is ok WB.

There is nothing worse when your parents get too old to care for themselves and the feeling of helplessness you get when you know there is nothing you can do. Been there.

The sad thing is that even if the protesters watched this they still wouldn’t get it, or care anyway. There is an assumption that some of them might watch this and think “god I was a dumb ****”, but that just wouldn’t be the case, zero embarrassment and they would do the same next weekend given the opportunity. So we are left with a video that states what we already know anyway, done in an amusing way.

The bit I dont get is where you can believe a giant conspiracy involving most of the world but not a smaller conspiracy involving youtubers making money off roobs from their subs. Or a smaller one involving actual billioanaires ensuring they don't have to subsidise government and infastructure through taxes.

Can’t blame the internet for everything. Ignorance and stupidity is timeless, international, and knows no boundaries. Internet access is not required to rouse a mob.

Highly educated “experts” oversaw the Holocaust, medically trained psychiatrists euthanised 300,000 Germans who’s lives were considered not worth living.

The only conspiracy I agree with is one I created. Beyond that: I don’t believe in Father Xmas.

I remember hearing a story, not sure if it’s true, a doctor giving a vaccine and this anti-vax person came in and was spouting all that nonsense about 5G and how it’s all a conspiracy etc.

Anyway, doctor realised this person was one of those super pro-US is the best America #1 people. Doctor said to them: “What if all that 5G stuff is actually a conspiracy from the Communist Russians and Chinese to destabilise our American health system and release a disease that will kill us all?”

Guy got the vaccine.

Dunno if the story is true or not but hilarious if true

Hesitancy is not the only issue. You have to be technologically adept to book in for vaccinations. And this is an issue for some older Australians

COVID-19 vaccine uptake for over 60s is low but there may be some simple solutions https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-07-27/nsw-why-arent-people-in-their-60s-getting-covid-19-vaccine/100325058
