  • Bridge Blasts Wanderers To Summit Of A-League

    mack

A late goal to Mark Bridge gave the Wanderers a 1-0 win in torrential rain against Melbourne Victory at Parramatta Stadium in Round 6.

82 minutes into the game substitute Labinot Haliti turned Adrian Leijer inside out before rifling a ball across the 6 yard box to the back post, the unmarked Bridge couldn't miss from point blank range in front of the RBB to record a famous win for the home side in front of a soggy but raucous crowd of over 15,500 spectators.

Prior to the match intrigue abounded when it was revealed that Michael Beauchamp had once again been left out of the match day squad, with Matthew Spiranovic staying put after his good performance against Melbourne Heart the week prior. In additional factoid was that the Australian National Team squad were watching on from the stands along with their new manager, ex-Victory man Ange Postecoglou.

Melbourne Victory held the ascendancy for much of the first half, dominating possession and the best chances. Connor Pain provided the best of the half, delivering a low cross to the front stick, the ball bobbling into the air as the Western Sydney defence failed to clear. Mitch Nichols headed it down into the path of Australian international player Archie Thompson but the Victory striker could only manage to toe-poke the ball wide from a meter out.

5 minutes before half time Shannon Cole had the pick of the few chances the Wanderers created. He received a through ball from Bridge after it went past Santalab, with only Coe to beat from a reasonable angle Cole tried to cut the ball back across goal for Santalab instead of taking on a shot. Thompson, Bridge and Troisi each fired shots in the last minutes of the half but they were well wide.

The second half saw the Wanderers work their way back into the match. Tony Popovic brought on Haliti & Tahj Minniecon to immediate effect, they energised the Red & Black warriors on the attack, while Spiranovic, Iacopo La Rocca & Nikolai Topor-Stanley kept the Victory offence locked up while defending. Santalab was put through on goal only to take one touch too many and overcook the chance. Cole had a free kick that he curled over the wall and onto the crossbar for a goal kick and La Rocca took aim from long range and skied his effort.

Mark Bridge had one chance when he turned in and away on the Victory defence but sliced his shot at the near post, but a minute later he was on the end of the Haliti cross and buried the only goal of the game. Melbourne had precious little time to mount a comeback and weren't able to unlock the league leading defence to snatch a point at the death.

The win put the Wanderers on top of the A-League Premiership ladder, 2 points clear of Brisbane Roar in 2nd. Mark Bridge got off the mark, Western Sydney are the only unbeaten team, a regular season unbeaten streak of 18 matches.

The Wanderers next match is against the Brisbane Roar on Friday the 22nd of November at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane.

    MUCH better than Beauchamp actually.

He is a class act, how long is he signed up for ?

You can see the respect he gets from the other players too, how many times they just kept giving him the ball.

We have him for 1 season then back to Europe is his plan. Too good for this league.

Excellent. Just like your SFCU trolling has made me laugh hahahahaha

I perhaps spend too much time trolling their forums, bit of a guilty pleasure.

Spiranovic is very good but I don't know if he's better than Beauchamp.

He has to be injured or something right? I cant understand why he wouldnt have started this if he was fit.

Popa mentioned in the press conference that he isn't injured at all and that he wanted the same lineup from last week.

I heard some rumours on the terraces that Popa and Beauchamp had a massive blow up before the heart game so that is why he is dropped.

doubt any truth to that rumour. No many people would know the inner workings of the team.

Honestly Sprianovic is a class player and just keeping beauchamp out.

I thought the story with Beauchamp was that his missus is due to have a baby any moment now so he didn't travel to Melbourne last week. Maybe she still hasn't had it?

2 different people told me this but yeah who knows.

Spira has slotted in like his playing since Day 1.

Dont forget too guys. No Hersi or Juric last night.

Adds an extra shine to the night IMO.

Actually for me you can add Poljak to those 2. He hasn't been able to get back into the side since his injury because we have been winning, but he adds stability to the midfield. La Rocca won praise last night but for me he is too cumbersome when in possession, and much of our games our style is based on rapid transition.

Cole and Å antalab were absolutely woeful tonight, actually thought we played some real piss poor football, the hit n hope hoofing long ball game, and short corners.  :smurfpoint:

Anyone else hear the fox sports boys going on about Topor-Stanley possibly being cited by the MRP for raising an elbow to Nichols? They must be kidding. Talk about soft, Rudan couldn't believe it.

Still to watch the replay after going last night, so my thoughts are yet to be fully formed on the performance. Overall however I thought it was a gutsy win in crap conditions, with some players not firing (i.e. Cole, Santalab, D'Apuzzo), some still to get a handle on their pozzie (i.e. Spira) and some coming back into form (Bridgey). The opposition was quality, particularly in the first 20 minutes but aside from Thompson's miss near the left post in that opening phase there wasn't a real 'ohmyfarkenGod' moment of panic. Shinji had a great game and again Labi and Tahj came off the bench with great effect. Jerome was okay with some good crosses and decent runs, though again without Hersi to combine with he was not as good as he is when Youssouf is there. Mooy seemed a little disconnected but was okay, and I wonder what is happening with Poljak and La Rocca...is Iaccopo playing that well that Matteo can't get back in?

What is most important about last night's game is the character the club has shown. Remember last season when we went down to them 0-2 at home even though we were a man up? I recall the 2nd half of that game being probably the worst the team ever played at home before or since. To be where we are at now, undefeated at home since January 6th, undefeated in regular season games since that date over 20 matches, knocking off Victory 3 times on the trot, regularly winning even with main players out due to injury...FFS how good is that.

Melbourne Victory didn't have any clear cut chances. A lot of their chances were half chances, and the majority were shots from the edge of the box. I agree that they can pass the ball around nicely and will be a danger if everything clicks for them. But I thought our defence mostly had them covered last night.

We should be worried about our inability to build up from the back. I thought as the game wore on we got a lot better at it. But we need to do it from the opening whistle.

Is a work in progress Montalbano. Popa says as much. Compared to pre season we're doing well.

I thought NTS was clear MOM tonight - was everywhere covering up others mistakes in the wet. la rocca was also very good and covic's handling of crosses and corners in difficult conditions was first class. we couldn't string 2 passes together in the first 15 but still solid defensively. either side of half time i thought we bossed it and pinned them back and created a number of good chances. was thrilled to see bridge score. I think he has been playing well and busting himself for the cause the last couple of weeks so was great to see him pop up and win it.

I liked how natural Spiranovic looks with the ball at his feet. Casually just faking and turning to shake off the pressing MV players. He was very good.

They way chested the ball straight to his feet time and again was noteworthy.

It's interesting you say that. I noticed that a lot of times our right winger whether it was Cole, Haliti or Minniecon, were free all by themselves on the right and we didn't exploit that enough. Our two best chances to Santalab and Cole came from long balls which put them into open space. When a team uses 4-2-4 on you there is nothing wrong with going over the top. As long a your passes are hitting the man. I think that's when we were at our best. Hitting long balls to our wingers who were running onto it.

yeah agreed, we had wingers free so many times.

The old man infront of me was going "WING WING WING" (in thick wog accent). It was kinda funny.

Dunno why we didnt play the lng ball.

Yeah I thought there was actually a lot of space in the wings last night that wasn't being taken advantage of.

I thought we really got dominated in the middle fog the park last night. They seemed to win 90% of challenges in that area. I think we missed poljak in this area. He might not be flashy but he win the challenges where it counts.

Also I think without the tall strong presence make list jobs applied

of juric upfront we suffered as out santalab couldn't win the headers or hold up the hall vs the bigger victory defenders. With juric out for the next few weeks we probably have to alter this tactic a bit otherwise we will end up giving up too much of the ball. If Melbourne had been better at finishing it could have been a really bad result.

Must say if the nets were any shallower, the Bridge goal would not have been anywhere near as spectacular as it hit the roof of the net itself.  Just sayin'..  :ninja:

I think we are being a bit harsh on both santa and cole, yeah they shanked a clear chance each, but both are not playing in their preferred usual positions in pretty ordinary conditions and had they landed those chances we would have been saying completely different things about them.

Santalab needs to just bag one for a bit of confidence just like our boy bridgey last year.

Haliti is good, but just like tahj, with devastating effect on a tiring opposition back line. They are great utility players but i can't see them as starters for a lack of technical ability.

Poppas tactics are brilliant and melbourne are very lucky we didn't bag 3 goals at least.
