  • Grand Final Bound Wanderers Lose To Mariners

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers capitulated to a pathetic 2-0 home loss against the lowly Central Coast Mariners this afternoon at Spotless Stadium.

After Tony Popovic's striker-less lineup spent 45 minute fumbling with the ball in midfield then the Mariners pounced in the second half with 2 goals to Roy O'Donovan. The Wanderers look devoid of shape and structure in the first half, with numerous occasions holding the ball in midfield 4 or 5 players crammed into the wing, leaving no-one in the middle to attack balls into the box or to make runs off the shoulder of the last defender. Mitch Nichols did little more than get his GPS tracking meters up, as his darting forward, sideways, backwards resulted in confusing the rest of the attackers and leaving them with no forward target.

If the first half was poor, the second was calamitous. Jonathan Aspro, who has been one of the more solid performers for the Wanderers this season gifted his opponents a chance from the penalty spot. As the Mariners lined up a corner kick, Aspro wrapped up Liam Rose in a bear hug and a mere 1 second after the corner was taken Kris Griffiths-Jones was pointing to the spot. O'Donovan blasted the penalty pasted Vedran Janjetovic to open the scoring in the 65th minute.

Brendon Santlab was finally bought on and he could not be the miracle man once again this season. He had two clear chances to put the Wanderers on the board, with one he put a diving header straight at Paul Izzo, and a second volleyed effort he put wide.

O'Donovan then sealed the points. The Mariners launched a somewhat aimless ball over the top of the Wanderers defence, and O'Donovan ran onto the ball and took advantage of horrendous positioning from Vedran Janjetovic to chip the ex-Sydney FC keeper into an open goal.

The Sydney Derby looms large next week, if the Wanderers lose then Popovic needs to resign or be sacked by the board. Enough is enough. Sentimentality does not win new trophies.

We should build a new stadium at Parramatta.

Why was the old one knocked down in the first place?

He has solved his own problem. About 9,000 others have seemingly done the same.

Pirtek was already incredible. It was known around the HAL as having the best atmosphere of any ground. The new stadium may match that, but fans/customers are being treated like **** in the meantime. NOTHING has been done to ameliorate the awfulness of the Spotless (lol) experience - largely, it would appear, because the fans' interests haven't been a significant consideration. Then again, having walked around Penrith Park in the blazing sun a few seasons ago, trying to find a way in, I should have realised that the WSW business doesn't really care about members. I suspect that no-one involved in the decision to choose Spotless had or has ever tried to get to Spotless by public transport.

    Ok

    A) just because Pirtek was known as having the best atmosphere of any a league ground doesn't mean it can't be better. If, for instance, we were playing in a stadium like AAMI the atmosphere would be twice as good as at Pirtek. You make it sound like a new stadium MIGHT match Pirtek. That's rubbish.

    B) perhaps you forget it was the fans (yes, the paying customers) who voted for spotless in the first place

    C) what would you have them do? There seems to be 3 major issues with spotless:

1 - it's an oval shaped stadium. You can't do anything about that. It's what the paying customers wanted.

2 - the match day atmosphere/pre match experience at SOP. They tried the lawn bar. People hated it. What do you want them to do? Erect an entire city especially for game day?

3 - the transport. From what I can see you catch a train to Strathfield and then another one to SOP. Or you can catch a ferry there. Is this so bad?

Parra was unfit for purpose. The changerooms were reportedly ancient, and we had to fight tooth and nail to host the ACL Final there, if you remember. It doesn't hold up to modern standards for the media room, corporate boxes and facilities.

So the stadium had to be rebuilt because the changerooms were "ancient"? How difficult could it be to refurbish them? They're only changerooms - not nuclear reactors.

"It doesn't hold up to modern standards for the media room, corporate boxes and facilities." The media room ain't relevant to ordinary members who go to the games - nor are corporate boxes. You could buy drinks and a range of food at Pirtek - and take a leak if necessary: again, what other "facilities" does the average football watcher need?

However, I take your point. The purpose of the refurbishment was nothing to do with the actual paying customers; it was all about increasing profit for the club's owners. That's their right, but it's also my right as a customer to refuse to accept the substandard situation at Spotless.

I reckon you'll change your tune once it's built. WSW home games in a proper bowl with a roof all the way round will be incredible

Can you offer any solutions ?

Better quality squad and play good football winning games would make it more bearable, club should do better with the way active supporters are treaded but. FFA ain't helping out either with city favoritism, later game times to please foxtel and garbage ref standards.

These factors are compiling the problem, we just need a good run of form to bring the seasonal I'll show up when we're winning bandwagon but still won't improve soulless.

Yep! The owners made a business decision that would boost their profits (eg more corporate boxes). I made a decision that I would not pay to voluntarily submit myself to the shitty Spotless experience.

I don't bear anyone any ill will, but it was always delusional to think that everyone in the stands at Pirtek was as hard core as the RBB. There are a large number, like me, who will support the Wanderers, but not when the fun experience of watching the game is so massively diluted by the sheer inconvenience and irritation of getting to and from the ground (let alone watching the game from so far away). I could even hack the team's crap form if I didn't know that, when I got back to the train station, I would be faced with what can only be described as the usual Sydney Trains chaos.

What interests me is how this will affect the Wanderers going forward. For example, if people currently have memberships, but are not coming to the games because of the "Spotless experience", will they bother renewing next year? And if there are a couple of seasons of crap form on the field at Spotless, will the club be able to get those "lost" members back?

Sorry, but I couldn't help post this addendum. Looking at the club's FAQs, I came across the following, which must qualify as pure corporate hubris:

"WILL I HAVE THE SAME SEAT WHEN THE NEW STADIUM IS OPENED?

Members [sic] seating at the new stadium in Parramatta will be based on the following factors:

        ...

       3. Match Attendance – Based on how many matches you attend throughout the season."

Do you have any idea where the SOP wharf is? Yes it is that bad.

Besides a sell out creates a buzz, those season 1 sell outs at parra made people want to come check it out

You mean those season 1 derby or finals only sellouts? The first of which was followed by 5 home games under 10k. Winning made people want to check it out, and winning is what will be needed again. There were only a handful on standard league games that ran out of tickets for the average punter.

Stiofan I hear you. Maybe I can help.

You used to drive to Parra but go by train to SOP.

I'm older than you, I used to drive to Parra as well 30 minutes plus.

Now I drive to Lidcombe, park there, go to Dooleys, catch the sprint train to SOP. Takes maybe an extra 15 minutes each way. Sometimes the traffic is bad and it takes a bit longer.

Not as good as Parra. Doesn't make the stadium any better. But I still get to support the team and club I thought I'd never have.

    Try it next time.

Post on here or send me a pm if you like (regular posters may note my personal development - I now know what a pm is as a result of using this forum!!) and we can arrange for you and yours to join me and mine at Dooleys and we can have a chat about football and stadiums.

"Invisible Smurf"? In my first post on this forum, I said that I was a dual ticket-holder. As soon as Wanderers was launched, I signed up, because I support football. At Wanderers' games, I cheer for Wanderers. At SFC games, I cheer for SFC. At Derbies, I cheer for SFC, because I'm not a turncoat.

There's no cognitive dissonance involved. When I post on this forum, it's as a Wanderers' member. Are you suggesting that I'm any less entitled to comment than the tens of thousands of bandwaggoners who came on board long after me?

Spotless isn't too bad. It's a pretty good stadium (for an oval), with more than decent facilities and easy access to each bay. Parking for free is a breeze so long as you're willing to walk, and even then it's not too much further than what many of us enjoyed with the walk across Parramatta Park.

Of course, the parking solution above only works if you're not a fat bastard. To be fair I probably should admit it also helps to not have kids and be relatively young.

Anyway, for me I don't think the biggest issue is the stadium; rather it's the lack of results on the pitch and the fact our honeymoon with the club, in what is probably the most fickle city for sport in Australia, has finally come to a crashing end. For every one person who decided to give Spotless a miss (and I agree there are compelling reasons for any stuck on public transport), I truly believe there would have been at least one through the door if results were going our way. Unfortunately our results at home are appalling, and the stands are suffering as a result.

On a completely different note, what the hell happened to the RBB's WDYSF to the stands? It may be tacky and I haven't participated for a couple of years, but the kids around the ground seemed to really like it. Now it seems the RBB just try and get others involved in that clap, and to say the level of engagement from the stands is low would be an understatement.

I can answer your puzzlement. I was brought up to support a team, but not to lose sight of the fact that it's a game, with good players in both teams. That means that I sometimes annoy people around me by cheering for some great piece of play by the other side. Doesn't worry me - I'm there for the game.  :-)

Don't agree with the WDWSF comment, but everything else is spot on.

I cannot for the life of me, no matter how bad SOP is, even consider not a attending a game there. I hate Spotless. I hate ANZ.

But I will never selectively choose to miss a game there for the stadium reasons, because WSW's are my team.

Drove past Concord Oval yesterday and wondered - why wasn't that considered as an option. While it is a bit further east than we would like, it has so much going for it.

     - Easy to get to from the West - straight east down the M4 and then a couple of kilometres down parramatta road

     - Nearly 20,000 mainly all seater

    - Walking distance from Burwood Railway Station and restaurants/pubs which would give game day a Parramatta-like experience. There is even a Harrys Cafe De-Wheels nearby!

    - Pretty much sitting idle during the summer months (correct me if I'm wrong).

I see it as a missed oportunity.
