  • Lightning Strikes Thrice

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers finally have their first win at Parramatta Stadium this A-League season with a come from behind 3-2 victory against a 10 man Melbourne City.

A massive storm hit Sydney prior to the game, drenching the stadium and bracketing the Parramatta area with constant lightning and thunder. The game was delayed by an hour until the storm cleared. A surprise inclusion in the Wanderers squad was the debut of central defender Jonathan Aspropotamitis as a result of the heavy schedule and injuries to several players.

City were unlucky not to open the score after a bakers dozen of minutes, an wide Aaron Mooy free kick found Patrick Kisnorbo but somehow his touch sliced onto the underside of the crossbar. City did get themselves in front eventually on the half-hour. Mooy received a second chance after a cleared corner and he stood up Labinot Haliti to deliver a teasing cross to the back post that found Kisnorbo, who had his header cleared off the line by Yojiro Takahagi, only to see Safuwan Baharudin react faster than Mateo Poljak to pounce on the rebound to fire it past Dean Bouzanis from point blank range.

Despite going behind the Wanderers arguably had the better of the play, without much result in terms of shots. Eventually the pressure told, Tomi Juric combined with Haliti to cross into the middle, Juric getting onto the end of the teasing effort, having his first time shot blocked by Connor Chapman, this time around Poljak was able to react and his sidefoot shot was perfectly placed and the Wanderers were level at the break.

Both sides went looking for another goal to take the lead, and Tomi Juric should have put his side in front. Nikita Rukavytsya was hammered in a tackle but still managed to release Takahagi, an intelligent run from Juric saw him get in behind the City defence. With the crowd expecting him to bulge the back of the net he was denied by a superb reflex save from City keeper Tando Velaphi.

The game swung again a minute after the Juric miss. Substitute Jason Trifiro gave away a foul nearly on half-way and deep on the left flank, Mooy launched his cross into the penalty are and it evaded everyone including Dean Bouzanis to nestle into the far corner.

While the Wanderers could have been forgiven if they went into their shell with heads dropped, the Mooy goal saw gave the Wanderers players double their effort to get something out of the game. And get something they did. Connor Chapman turned the game on it's head with two baffling brain explosions. The first was giving away a clear penalty on Tomi Juric, after he got nutmegged by Juric, Chapman dragged his arm across the striker and shoved him to ground, spotted by Strebre Delovski. Juric having won the penalty took it as well, burying a powerful strike past the dive of Velaphi.

Chapman's second brain explosion gave the Wanderers a one man advantage. After Takahagi dispossessed the defender with a sliding challenge that left Chapman incensed. As Delovski waved play on Chapman confronted & manhandled the referee, earning him an instant straight red card.

Western Sydney poured forward to take advantage of their greater number, and it was Rukavytsya who should have put the home team in front 5 minutes before regulation time expired. Takahagi was cut down outside the area, Juric stood over the ball, City's marking fell to pieces leaving Rukavytsya in open space. He was spotted by Juric who calmly slotted the ball behind the City defensive wall, Rukavytsya's first touch wasn't optimal and his shot was smothered by the onrushing Velaphi.

In the end the flying winger had the last laugh. 2 minutes into injury time Tanaka's cross could only be flicked on by Kisnorbo, and it fell to the benefit of Rukavytsya, who fired a side volley back across goal, giving Velaphi no chance to repeat his heroics and giving the Wanderers their first win at Parramatta Stadium in the A-League this season.

The win lifts the club off the bottom of the A-League ladder as a result of their superior goal difference over Newcastle, and keeping just the faintest glimmer of hope that should Brisbane, City & the Mariners all collapse in a heap, the Wanderers could finish 6th by winning most if not all of their remaining matches.

The Wanderers next match is against Melbourne Victory at Parramatta Stadium on Friday the 13th of March.

guy waves flag, lady grabs flag from him causing him to fall a little bit so guy confronts lady saying WTF. guy gets taken out by cops despite security saying everything is fine

this is ****in active people...bitch move to the side if you want to watch the game

there is no argument for or against here...at all!

Your account merely describes the 8rse end of events, the grand finale.

By that time it wasn't about the flag any longer at all, regardless of what people might think. The flag guy played a very active role in all of this. He made it an exercise of me vs them. He had his chance when he got a visit from security, was allowed to continue on, and security moved away. He then he turned up the volume (and those who thought they needed to get involved as well) in more than one way, and the girls stood their ground.

A lot of people from Bay 55 behaved like c8cks yesterday.

Initiated = started it = who was in the right vs who was wrong? Nuh, you tell me. I only watched the build up and the end result. I hope the three girls come back on Friday, and I am going to ask them.

Has anyone noticed what tiny percentage of headers we win from long balls?

Especially in offensive positions, but also recently when we're defending.

There are 3 groups of people in the RBB who do not have to move for anyone: La Banda, capos and flag wavers. You fit in around them, not the other way round.

And yet we still have people who complain "why do they get to stand there"

Jeez last night was hard yards. Started off okay though very quiet at the Bavarian, then it was 'End of Days' stuff. Has to be said if that was what they call winning ugly then our victory was a three bag/dingo job. It felt for big patches that we had no cohesion or system whatsoever. And the way players hung off Mooy as if he was Puskas or Best was ridiculous. The lad's improved his confidence as a playmaker and seems more physically up to the challenge, but he's still no Shinji, or even a Luongo.

Ruka is giving me heartache...I really want him to do well and his goal was great, but FMD he sometimes has the touch of a quadruple amputee trying to eat soup with chop sticks. I honestly don't know if he deserves another season with us. Passing and possession were like two mutually exclusive terms for the boys, but all things considered I'll take a 3-2 win like that over say a 3-4 derby loss any day.

And for anyone concerned over the red or the pen given by Strebre...after all his shite calls with the Yarrachester grubs that seemed to never end in a card, well about fooking time we got the luck of the draw.

True believers! Don't hate me mick, we were upstairs :)

This Mick was also upstairs, midway up the Eastern Grandstand and still got soaked...   :woah:  :woah:  :woah:

Upstairs too avoiding the rain...was missing Bay 65 a bit

So many people slow on the uptake, you'd think after 3 seasons people would know what the setup is. Edited by GD07

    A few things:

    - Our stats weren't pretty tonight but neither have they been since the beginning, the difference was tonight compared to rest of the season, is that we have found a way to win especially when going a goal down & despite playing some average periods. This hasn't been done since the beginning of S2. Yes we had chances, yes our passing stat was down, yes our long balls were terrible, yes we couldn't get our throw ins right, yes we couldn't bury our chances but this season hasn't been great all round. Unfortunately there is no time to work on these issues during the week, we are pretty much going game to game, all we can hope for is that we continue to create enough chances to win games & we tighten up our defense to stop letting in soft goals

    - We can't compare Mooy to Trifiro, one is a squaddie & the other is a regular/star for his team (probably one of the best midfielders in the league). Trifiro came on to do a job but was outclassed by Mooy every time he took on Mooy. Yes he played some nice stuff when he had the ball in midfield, linking the play, some nice passes from deep but didn't have a huge impact on the game. Still be gutting to be subbed off after playing some okay stuff in your first appearance this season.

    - On the flag waving incident, from my perspective I don't think that these people should be in the RBB. They've bought the wrong membership & the club needs to be getting these people to move out of the RBB. In saying that, did the flag waver really go half way up the bay & purposely stand right in front of these people? Okay they shouldn't be there & they don't understand the rules of active support (probably have no idea who NATO was or what he meant to us) but couldn't he have done it next to them or behind them? I think this is what FCB was talking about when he said both parties were at fault in this situation. I think his point is being missed when it comes to this topic. I'd really like to hear on both parties what actually happened because clearly there were many witnesses (from afar) but not many know the real story. Just hope this guy isn't charged or banned from the stadium, last thing we need is another banning order!

    - The other worrying thing is the soft tissue injuries. I read an article on this site saying a minimum of three days between matches is needed for recovery & playing less than this increases our chances of soft tissue injuries. Considering the players have had a long season already & were looking tired in December it is not surprising that we were having problems in this department. Schedule is doing us no favours & I just hope that we can get through the Aleague games without getting too many injuries to save our best team for the ACL. The way things are going, it doesn't look promising. Ridiculous from the FFA that they did us no favours this year in regards to CWC & ACL, almost like they want teams like us to fail. Something needs to change.

Can't really blame Bouzanis for Mooy's goal. He's got to stay central in case there's a touch; he can cover more of the goal.

Only thing we might have done would be to get a defender to drop onto the post when the FK is taken.

He did have a lot of shaky moments throughout the game though, as did Aspro

NO ONE, I repeat no one, should ever grab, let alone pull on, a flag that someone is waving in the RBB.

    The stupid girl & her mates who grabbed the flag that was being waved;

    • EASILY could've moved to another section within the RBB if the flags were blocking their oh-so-precious view.
    • I hope they NEVER take another step in the RBB.
    • And the nerve of them, to aggressively grab one of Nato's flags, on one of the two nights (this coming Friday's match as well) which was for Nato.

Absolutely disgusting and appalling stuff, by those so-called Wanderers fans.

I've seen some guy being a total dick by grabbing someone's flag, snatching it out of his hand and throwing it over the stands. They were smaller banner type flags.

The other guy was humble and just said sorry mate pulled out another one and said I'll get out of your way and went elsewhere with it. He had made a fair few of them himself and just handed them out to anyone who wanted to wave them about.

    Some people are just trouble.

The issue was his confidence. The ball came into the box pretty straight as opposed to wider & closer to the goal (think Yojiro goal vs city), he wasn't confident going into a crowd of people to get the ball. Had he made the decision to come out for the ball, he would have caught the ball even if he was 3-5m from where he was standing. He decided to take the conservative approach & stay on his line & hope that a defender would get on the ball.

It wasn't even a case of staying central, in case there was a touch. The ball came through the middle of the box (from deep), it wasn't if it came out wide & across the face of the goal. In terms of shaky moments, he was really dodgy coming off his line for balls over the top & was really unsure. I didn't think he was too bad off crosses in general, I think it had more to do with the quality of the ball coming into the box rather than positioning or ability.

We can call it a Wanderers goal. I've never seen that sort of goal happen to any team as much as us.
