  • Japanese Genius Shinji Ono Latest Superstar Linked To Wanderers

    mack

Overnight reports have linked Japanese superstar Shinji Ono to the inaugural Marquee player position for Western Sydney Wanderers.

The attacking playmaker would be a massive boon to the creative stocks of the new club, while enabling the Wanderers to tap into the potentially lucrative Asian market.

Ono has nearly 350 first team matches under his belt as well as 56 caps for the Samurai Blue. His gifted feet caused him to be nicknamed 'Genius' from early in his career, with outstanding vision and creativity with his defence splitting through balls.

The report in the Sydney Morning Herald states that Ono is preferred by Tony Popovic over Michael Ballack who has made approaches to the Wanderers officials. Such a signing would be a huge boon to the playing roster and would have the attacking stocks of the team salivating at the prospect of his creative playmaking.

Ono seems the kind of player that could be with the Wanderers for a good while. The type of player that would bring stability. With Ballack, he might be gone in 12 months time.

Whoever it is, just get it over and done with!!! The anticipation is killing me!

At least fifa13 is out tmoro to fill abit of time until seasons kickoff.

If Ono did sign, at the very least he would start from the bench come round 1.

Or 3 months time because he gets an injury

That's what they said about Kewell.

Australians are the leaders in sports conditioning in the world IMO. We have the best guys here.

The amount of Australian physios/sports conditioners etc around the world and in major sporting teams is outstanding. We own.

Agree. Just sign the player FFS. It is becoming pathetic, and it will also give the new player less chance to bond with the rest team of the team members.Otherwise we will end up signing no one the way it is going.

I have heard a lot of stories about Ono being injured over the last few years. Think he would be brilliant for our attack and add that extra spark to pair mooy just don't want to see $800k sitting on the bench.

I think Ono (if he signs I'll start calling him "Tensai") would be a huge signing. He'll have the ability to bring a lot of depth in the middle of the park. I'm all for ballack, mostly from the days he was at chelsea, but Ono is at the top of my list. Wish we knew who the other two were though! shame they didn't leak haha

Having a marquee on the bench would only happen if David Carney becomes our marquee player

After being pumped by Ballack rumours this would be a let down. Ono isn't widely known outside of football fans and if he was in still playing well you would think half the J-league would wanna sign him

Ono puts 500 people in the stadium

    Ballack puts 5000

Forget Ono do the Ballack deal!

A week ago we were all saying we don't need a marquee and we were happy with our squad. Now suddenly we are getting picky when a couple options show up out of nowhere lol

I'd prefer Ono. Especially at half the cost.

I'm also glad we have a manager that prefers Ono, says good things about Popa.

For those stressing about this dragging out. I'm sure its a done deal, they won't announce it during GF week. They'll string the media along with publicity generating speculation until they are ready to announce

Here's an article from The Australian by Ray Gatt saying that the club is expected to announce the signing of Ono tomorrow.

He's also been tweeting that "Ono to arrive in Sydney tomorrow and will undergo medical before signing"

Gatty just tweeted again. "Sorry all. Ono coming in Monday morning"

That's a heaps good point, but I've got the feeling Ono will perform much better on the pitch with his work rate. I love ballack but I'd love results more. Our team is already looking great and if we add a hard worker like Ono in the middle then i think it pays off more. If there was no talk of ballack at all and Ono's name popped up out of blue, it would seem like a way bigger signing, but ballack over shadows it haha everyone's expectations skyrocketed

He does not have the name that Euro snobs are after, but Ono is younger, a better team player and the Asian market is our place like it or not.

He is huge in Asia, yes he may not have the bums on seats like Ballack but he is better for the $ value to our club as an assett to market to Asia. I have mentioned before that he can bring sponsors, TV etc that will in time be a win win for both our club and us the supporter.

Yes Ballack may get a lot ,more initially through the gate but long term, think past tommorrow and we will be a better club for it.

I feel Ono if marketed right will draw a good number of educated football supporters who follow the J League and Japan.

I think a better decission and lets all back Ono when he walks onto the park.

Great to see Ono on board. He has had an injury plagued career but I'm sure he'll be fine, obviously no guarantees.

He is quality, welcome to the Wanderers Shinji!

I'm not so sure. I've heard that he no longer has the following in Asia he once had and that the only tv interest we could hope to get might be a mention on Japanese news. Without said TV coverage it would follow that Asian sponsors would have little reason to invest. In terms of bums on seats, the Japanese immigrant community would have to be one of the smallest in Sydney and many educated footballers couldn't give a **** because he hasn't played in a top rate league.

As for the football I'd say it's a toss up who might perform better, but in terms of the marketing that the Wanderers need its a clear win for Ballack. If WSW is hoping for anything like the ADP effect, Ono will be a major fail.

We desperately need coverage to grow our brand in Sydney. I could be wrong, but with the signing of Ono we might get a small article 6 pages from the back in the paper and little if anything on the news. With Ballack, media and social networks would go spastic.

If we sign him I wish him all the best and sincerely hope he kills it on the park because I really don't see us benefiting in any other way.

I'm very happy with Ono. We need another creative player besides Mooy. And unlike Ballack he can stay longer than 1 year and add something to the culture of the club.

Most of the fans that Ballack would draw would not come to games after he is gone or when out injured, which is what will happen with the newfound Del Peiro fan boys over at SFS.

Quite frankly I don't believe Ono fits as a marquee in anyway shape or form. If we don't get Ballack then save the cash. That's my opinion.
