  • Wanderers Obliterated By Sydney FC

    mack

Sydney FC demolished the Western Sydney Wanderers tonight in Homebush, putting an end to the Wanderers season before Christmas with a 5-0 thumping.

Andrew Mierzejewski began the destruction with his piledriving finishing in the 14th minute. David Carney beat Roly Bonevacia to a cutback, made his way to the byline & crossed into the middle. Vedran Janjetovic palmed the cross away, none of the Wanderers reacted while Mierzejewski fired a laserlike finish without taking a touch. Alvaro Cejudo had the chance to hit back in the 28th minute, the Spanish winger firing from outside the area, Andrew Redmayne the Sydney FC goalkeeper touched the ball onto the bar & out for a corner.

Alex Brosque fired a warning shot at the home side in the 35th minute, as he combined with Luke Wilkshire before firing wide. Brosque made no mistake 5 minutes later, Bobo pierced the Wanderers defensive line with a through ball, Brosque needed one touch to get round the hopelessly out of position Janjetovic to roll the ball home.

When Jack Clisby chipped down Mierzejewski on the edge of the box before half-time there would have been few people not expecting the free kick to find the back of the net. Mierzejewski stepped up with his left foot, curled the ball over the wall, leaving Janjetovic grasping and unable to turn the ball away.

The night went from bad to worse when striker Lachlan Scott found the back of the net at the wrong end. Sydney FC played a short corner, Mierzejewski popped up again to fire in a cross that Scott jumped in an attempt to clear, only to glance off the top of his head & find the far corner. Had Scott left the ball alone it was highly likely that Carney would have been pinged for offside, but alas it was 4-0.

It would have been 5 goals but for the VAR over-turning a goal earlier in the game for a handball but nonetheless the 5th eventually came in the 75th minute, Brandon O'Neil given the freedom of the Wanderers penalty area he curled his shot past Janjetovic. Sydney FC looked dangerous whenever they got hold of the ball in the Wanderers half, while the likes of Cejudo, Scott (when down the right end), and substitutes Jumpei & Santalab looked toothless.

It was a truly pathetic, gutless, inept, abysmal "performance". The players on the pitch don't deserve to wear the Red & Black as it stands, the club should strip them of that right, force them to wear the white kit of surrender until they turn in an effort worthy of the players who came before them. Whatever Gombau is doing isn't working, he needs to go back to the drawing board & figure out a way to put any kind of defensive mettle back in his squad. With the January transfer window coming up it might be time to let the likes of Jumpei, Clisby, Hamill, Melling & Cejudo they can find a new club and start playing the youth team. If we're going to get smashed we might as well give our promising youth talent a chance to shine.

Western Sydney face the rising Central Coast Mariners in Gosford next Saturday night.

someones had a dummy spit maybe Sydney FC would be better for you

Paul, I think you might find Rolly playing the role of Issais, but only if we could pick up a decent 10 in January.  Not sure Herd is mobile enough for Gombau's structure.  Baccus (snr) is but he likes playing higher up.  The ideal player is who we had last year Antonis, he would fit perfectly into that role

Agreed. Antonis would be great as tge lone DM but our squad is full and any offloads count toward the salary cap. Perhaps Melling maybe the casualty.

The is my suggestion for the game against the Mariners.

You gotta laugh at this season so far,  Fml.

Undefeated  pre season  -“we’re gonna be contenders this year for sure” popa quits a week out. We draw five games in a row and bottle every lead we took. After weeks on the road we finally get a home game which is cancelled due to the grass not growing... back on the road again, lose to Adelaide.. finally back home again since round 2, lose 2-0 Brisbane, losing key players to injury...then proceed to get absolutely humiliated losing 5-0 in our biggest game of the season to Sydney FC.

Havent scored a goal in a month.

    Conceded 9

Surely it’s gotta get better ?

    Calling it now.

Our mighty ascension up the ladder commences in Gosford.

The kids and results don't matter, god I hate it when people bring this up, although it does show that people don't get the concept.  The results don't matter for young kids (below 12 in most places) because they DONT matter.  The kids know if they win or lose, but it doesn't matter.  Kids at that age are being taught how to play, they are being taught that football is fun, they are being taught how to control the ball, how to pass.

I still see it, because to the coach they still have to win, so they put a kid off side (as there are no offsides in under 12 and below) they stick a kid next to the opposition goal keeper, kick the ball long to them, who needs a midfield anyway, two kicks score a goal.  What does that teach the other 11,12,13 kids on the field?

Jesus Christ it is not hard to understand, why people struggle with it is beyond me.

Have a read on what the coaches think on youth development in this country

There was the same thing in relation to Popa, and several people on this forum used to shout you down if you dare criticised his tactics. This was after we had Popa for a few years, and it was obvious he was being worked out by other coaches and still using the same tactics, substitutions, game plan etc.

I think Gombau deserves a bit more time before we stick the knife in his back. He might fail in the next year. Fair enough. But then everything he is doing now seems to be trial and error. Unfortunately it is just not working.

Oh wait I forgot we also scored in the derby. Clinical header to the far left.

Ongoing losses will move board/club execs into the "Gombau out" camp.

    Winning will mean "Gombau in".

Draws will prolong the uncertainty, with "Gombau in" more likely. Will depend on what happens behind the scenes.

I enjoy football debate. thats why i log on here. i rarely agreed with it but I even enjoyed old mate riva's brutal assessment of popa because it was football discussion.

What i'm hoping for is for people who are slagging me and others off for airing criticisms of what we have seen so far to tell me what you are seeing that makes you think we are on the right track with gombau rather than 'you are a **** supporter mate **** off' as a pointless straw man argument.

I think Gombau will turn out just fine and we need at least 10 games before any proper analysis can be made  but I don't think I can ever forgive him for that crap that he masterminded on Saturday .

I can only say that Gombau made Adelaide a good team a few years back. I was impressed with that Adelaide team. Defensively good, well structured and some smart attacking players. I think more than anything we need structure, and if Gombau gets his way he will eventually provide that.

What worries me more is the attitude of a lot of the current players we have. It is why we are one of the mentally weakest teams in the league. Other teams will always feel like they can break us, because our players are soft and spoilt. It's a far cry from guys we used to have in the club like Covic, Shinji, Topor, Cole etc.

If anything brings Gombau down, it will be the playing group not wanting to adjust, or not being able to.

I have read the results, and considering the A league clubs deal with under 12 and above it doesn't dismiss what i said, anything over under 12 is Competitive, ie the age group that have academies deal with.  Now do you want em to post the large number of sport science articles on the befit of skills development away from competition for children?
