A-League: Hub-free draw to include matches throughout Australia despite current border restrictions

A grand final rematch and two derbies are set to feature in the first round of the new A-League season.

Marco Monteverde

A grand final rematch between Sydney FC and Melbourne City looms as the highlight of the opening round of the new A-League season.

The hub-free draw for the new campaign kicking off on Sunday, December 27 is set to be released on Tuesday.

Despite the West Australian borders still being closed, Perth Glory will be allocated home matches in the draw, with A-League officials hopeful border restrictions will have been relaxed by the start of the season.

However, the start of the Glory’s A-League campaign might be delayed if the club cannot train while in quarantine for two weeks on their return to Perth from AFC Champions League duty in Qatar.

Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory are also in Qatar, but it’s understood both clubs will be able to train while in quarantine on their return to Australia to ensure they are ready to start the season on time.

The draw will no doubt be subject to change as in the unlikely event that the Glory, Sydney and the Victory go deep into the Champions League tournament, their quarantine period could overlap with the start of the A-League season.

In the draw, champions Sydney will host last season’s beaten grand finalists Melbourne City on Wednesday, December 30.

The season is expected to kick off with a derby between Western Sydney Wanderers and newcomers Macarthur FC on December 27, most likely at Bankwest Stadium.

It will be part of a venue double-header with a W-League season-opening match also set to feature the Wanderers.

Elsewhere, Brisbane Roar will host Wellington Phoenix – who will be based in NSW for most, if not the entire season – on December 29 at their new home ground, Redcliffe’s Dolphin Oval.

The Roar have left Suncorp Stadium, their home ground since the competition’s inception in 2005.

In another match set for the first week of the season, providing border restrictions are eased, Western United are tipped to host Adelaide United, most likely at Geelong.

Another first-week clash will be an F3 derby between the Central Coast Mariners and the Newcastle Jets.

Jets attacker Bernie Ibini – who wants to leave the cub – last week returned to Newcastle training after taking almost two weeks of stress leave.

However, he’s unlikely to play on Thursday when the Jets meet Macarthur in a trial at Maitland.

The Wanderers on Tuesday announced the re-signing of Bruce Kamau for the upcoming season.

Kamau said: “I’ve got a lot of goals for myself this season, I’d like to play some good football higher up the pitch, score some goals and get some assists, helping the team in any way that I can.

“As a team, we want to challenge for silverware and win something this season.”

Imho, all 3 A-league teams won't get out of the ACL group stages

Reports are that the first game of the season will be the derby between us and Macarthur at Bankwest. Hopefully we get off to a good start against the new lot.

If 27th out...will be on the road....won't be at a game until after 1st week Jan.

Ah well.

Looks like a friendly against Adelaide in the next month

"The Reds returned to training on Monday, with a week-long trip NSW next month for trials against Western Sydney Wanderers, the Central Coast Mariners and Macarthur FC back on the agenda after Adelaide coach Carl Veart last week doubted whether the camp would go ahead."

Our draw is here and the full list of fixtures are here.

The round numbers on our draw are weird. I scrolled down, saw 40 rounds and thought that was a little excessive. If you look closer we don't play in round 5, 9, 13 etc, so it's still the 26 round draw where we play 13 home games, 13 away and play some teams twice, some three times.

WSW three time opponents: Sydney FC, Brisbane, Adelaide and Wellington

everyone else we play twice

As long as we aren't dogshit (big ask, I know...), this should be a really enjoyable season. Keen to do all the early season away trips to Newy, Central Coast and the Nix in Wollongong.

Balks and I have just taken a punt on Perth opening up and have booked some free flights we had for the second last round. We originally wanted to go to the Reds game on Good Friday, but the flight allocation was exhausted.

The MV game in Melbourne is at Docklands, and that didn't interest us, so it was between Perth and Brisbane and I wanted to see quokkas :P

Although it's slightly weird because of the new dates, it's good to see the OG Derby in R5. Should actually be entertaining and will have some build up.

Still boggles my mind that the league is commencing during the single busiest week of the year for family holidays. Half of the WSW fan base will all be in Nelson Bay (myself included) for our first home game lol

I am away for 27th and new years day game. First game for me at Newy on 5th Jan.

Sounds bloody excellent, only just noticed.

Except Friday night 7pm kick off isn't it?

Most would need time off work / early mark to make is possible as traffic and all that hassle

A sickie and a football game isn't excellent?

Mate, people here bitched on about going to Kogarah Oval on a Friday night, never mind the Gong lol

I will have to sort my son out and double back and work it out somehow....it WILL be a pain for some though and impact the numbers.

I will be there in the Gong for sure.

Shame there isn't a Kogarah derby this year, was my favourite game last season.

The atmosphere was electric for a suburban ground.
