The Western Sydney Wanderers finally broke their season long home victory drought, as they comprehensively outplayed the Newcastle Jets 2-0 at Campbelltown Stadium.

The match was a clash of two outfits in a similar place on the A-League ladder, but the conclusion was one of total dominance for the Wanderers.

Despite the return from suspension of Brendon Santalab, coach Tony Popovic elected to continue with Lachlan Scott up front, and his choice paid dividends right before half-time. Kearyn Baccus has finally started to look like challenging for a first team position and he punctuated his good performance with a killer ball through the middle of the Jets defence. Having found Scott, the young striker turned on the ball before lashing a clinical strike into the top right corner and giving Jack Duncan no chance to make a save.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first. Newcastle huffed & puffed but never truly looked like bothering the scorers. The Wanderers doubled their advantage in the 68th minute. Mitch Nichols blasted a shot at Duncan from the byline, it rebounded to Dimas Delgado who found an unmarked Jaushua Sotirio. He swept his foot to the ball, with it taking a deflection from Mateo Poljak that wrong footed the Newcastle keeper for the 2-0 scoreline.

Newcastle tried their best but failed to take control for any meaningful amount of time, and the game was in far more danger of finishing 3-0 than the Jets pulling a goal back. Neither side could add to the scoreline however, with the Wanderers picking up their first home win of the season just in time to visit the Brisbane Roar next week.

    Isn't capacity listed as 20k?

Yes, but there's only 10000 seats.

How many season ticket members will accept a membership to a grassy hill?

Is it any worse than being asked to sit on the moon and watch the game on the big screen rather than follow ants on the green looking thing down there?

    It's not.

But (supposedly) the vote from the members was for OP. The MEMBERS voted for a circular stadium.

Would you want to be the person from the membership department to tell 8000 members to bring their picnic blanket to games for the next 3 seasons?

Nothing we can do about that now.

    Don't forget, it's only temporary.

Does the league allow grass areas to be official ticketed areas? I was under the impression that they can only account for the number of seats (just over 13000 according to the stadium gov website).

AFAIk there needs to be a seat for each ticketed member of the club, which is why most venues were ruled out early in the process.

It also explains why Newcastle can have stands and hills, because the stands have more than enough capacity to cater for their members.

I'm surprised Antonis didn't get a run yesterday. How Hamill comes off the bench to replace Clisby as a preference over Antonis over Dimas/Baccus is beyond me. We get nothing out of having Hamill playing the last 5 minutes - even Clisby was shocked to see his number come up. I was impressed with the back line over the weekend - I think Neville had a hard time with Nabbout but I truly don't understand Antonis not getting much needed game time in his legs.

Popa brought it up in the post game presser. He said (paraphrasing) he was concerned with all the tall timber that Newcastle brought on & he wanted more height to defend the inevitable crosses that Newcastle would whip in as they became more desperate.

I think he'd been planning on giving Antonis minutes in the game, especially given the heat

Makes sense but Jumpei on for Nico Martinez throws that in to doubt (unless TP realised that he had a height problem after that sub - which is surprising). Not like Jumpei added anything either - he was pushed off the ball so easily yesterday too.

He has been all season. Except for the occasional nutmeg.

I should've elaborated. If you watch the replay, you'll also notice Newcastle were targeting Clisby by launching long balls to the monster kid (don't know his name) that was subbed on. I'll have to go back and check, but IIRC Jumpei was already on the pitch when Newcastle started doing it. Hoffman & Hulk Junior vs Clisby & Jumpei wasn't a fair fight

I think stretch came on at the same time as Jumpei because they were standing next to each other near the fourth official and it looked ridiculous. Like he needed another Jumpei on his shoulders and a trench coat to look like a gown up.

Campbelltown should have been our home ground for the three years, it would enhance our status in the SW, no other teams play there(often) and it has that nice home ground feel to it.

location wise its terriblehowever i agree with everything else you said its just the location lets it down imo
100m from a railway station is an awesome location for some
that is true but for matches that end around 10 pm there is no way in hell i would be able to make it home till about 3 am or so
Where do you live broken hill?

pretty much i live in the Hawkesbury :P pretty much i would have to take the nightbus so whenever that starts plus around an hour and a half

He should move to Canberra, he'll get home at about 12:30-1am and save time.

i already get home around that time for Olympic park matches, sometimes slightly earlier but usually around 1 to 1:30 and Campbelltown is much worse location wise, i mean i would still do it but it wouldnt be ideal

Lol. Joel Griffiths carried Newcastle for a number of years and won the golden boot.

Newcastle turned to $hit when he left.

    #AleagueHistory

That’s a good thing then if he reminds me of him. Let’s hope Scott does the same. I watched Joel play for Sydney United and he improved when he left. Hopefully Scott shows us his best before, or if, he moves on.

That number 12 kid from the Jets chose the wrong sport should be playing Basketball was twice the size of Reliable Clisby. Makes sense now that you hear Popa's post game interview

    No rush with Antonis.

He's only had 2 full weeks of training & I suspect he'll get some game time in Brisbane & NZ.

He should be ready to perform close to his maximum come the next Derby at ANZ & the ACL in about a month

    Link to comment

Is there still time to get rid of Jumpei for another +1 and Borda for Eduardo?

Jumpei to ACL only for Eduardo imo... easier to achieve.

On his current trajectory Sotirio is gonna win the Ballon D'Or this year.

the Ballon D'Or has already been awarded this year :P

Ronaldo himself will charter a plane to Blacktown to hand it over to its rightful owner.

People realise that it will only take one crap game before everyone loses there **** about Sotirio again

The crazy thing is that if he improves his game too much, he'll get a decent offer by another club & leave. Why? He is currently on a squaddie contract & probably won't get as much as he would elsewhere. Look at Kuzi, saw the dollar signs & couldn't pack his bags fast enough.

I don't think people should get too carried away, let's just give this guy the backing & support he needs to transform his game over the next 18 months to take his game to another level. Funny how in the exact same scenario in season one, we got behind a similar sort of player & he thrived. Now, that expectations for the teams success are different, it seems that we can't tolerate the same sort of player now that there are expectations on success every season.

I will always back a player that gives it all on the field, a player that has the full backing & confidence of the manager but a potential or worth that can't be seen by others. He might not have the cult following that a certain Wanderer once had but is all the more in my eyes because he is a western Sydney boy,

Agreed. Very happy for Western Sydney juniors to be performing well and making appearances in the starting XI. Should be more of it and I am definitely looking forward to that being the case in the future!
