  • Hammond Brace Eases Wanderers Past Perth

The Western Sydney Wanderers picked themselves up from a very early Adam Taggart goal to come back and hit four in response, running out clear winners on Sunday afternoon in Parramatta with Aydan Hammond scoring a double along with a goal each for Oscar Preistman and Bozhidar Kraev.

Perth Glory got themselves off to the best possible start, January transfer window signing Yuto Misao found an inch perfect run from Lachie Wales. The Wanderers central defensive duo of Anthony Pantazopoulos & Alex Bonetig put themselves in awful positions while Perth's talismanic striker Adam Taggart made a classic near post run, got between the two defenders and when Wales' cutback bisected the defence Taggart's left foot volley found it's way under Lawrence Thomas and over the line.

Aydan Hammond was in the starting lineup due to a suspension to Nicolas Milanovic and the young winger took full advantage of the opportunity. A deep corner from Jack Clisby was nodded back into the middle by Pantazopoulos, Zac Sapsford knocked it back to Hammond who dribbled onto his right to deceive the two Perth players closing him down and fired a beautiful right footed curling strike from 20 yards out. Oli Sail dived but had no chance and the scores were level with the ball rippling the side netting.

Hammond had a brace in the 38th minute, a transition goal that began with Clisby & Kraev thieving the ball off Taggart in midfield. Borrello sparked the attack into life with a quick outlet ball to Sapsford, his cross along the turf made it past the defence & Sail to Kraev at the back post, he was closed down enough to have his shot blocked into the post but the rebound fell perfectly to Hammond and with the open net he couldn't miss to give the Wanderers the lead 5 minutes from half-time.

Perth nearly took advantage of some slack timekeeping deep into stoppage time. Almost a minute past the indicated time the Glory were given a corner that they whipped into the near post for a flick-on that took a lightning reflex save from Thomas to block away to finally get the teams into the sheds with the Wanderers still a goal to the good.

Perth almost replicated their first half opening goal with Misao in the action yet again, he sprinted onto a loose ball and blasted a 25 yard strike that had Thomas beaten but curled agonisingly into the crossbar before being cleared away. 2 minutes later he had similar but much closer chance inside the box but his aim was further off and he didn't trouble the crossbar or Thomas.

Perth shot themselves in the foot and handed Oscar Priestman the 3rd goal for the home side in the 50th minute. Oli Sail made the worst possible option under no pressure in his own area, a hospital pass to Perth midfielder Luke Amos running toward his own goal. The pass was soft and allowed Josh Brillante to nip in. The close contact had the ball rebound off Brillante or perhaps Amos but either way, Priestman was onside and in perfect position, with no-one but Sail in front of him he turned, aimed and fired past for his first A-League goal of the season.

Hammond nearly had his hat-trick almost off the kick-off, Borrello lobbed it over the top where Hammond, Tomislav Mrclea & Sail came together with the ball squeezing out to the advantage of Hammond who knocked it toward goal, with enough power to have scored if not for Mrcela making a desperate clearance to keep the scoreline to 3-1.

It was 4-1 in the 66th. Bozhidar Kraev had been industrious without much end product up to that point but he benefited from a fast break begun in the defensive third by Gabriel Cleur. The fullback fighting off three Perth players, playing a 1-2 with Hammond then passing it off for Borrello who himself found Sapsford. Perth had thrown too many players forward and it left them with a 3 on 2 defensive situation, Josh Risdon having to cover the central run continued by Cleur leaving the gap for Kraev at the back post and the Bulgarian threaded the needle between Risdon's attempted block and Sail who was covering his near post like a good goalkeeper should.

The usual hour mark substitution flurry was delayed by a good 10 minutes, and when it arrived Perth made three changes and the Wanderers a quadruple. Patrick Wood, Nikola Mileusnic & Amos left with Joel Anasmo, Trent Ostler & Taras Gomulka on for Perth. Clisby, Kraev, Sapsford & Brillante off for the Wanderers for Dean Pelekanos, Marcus Antonsson, Jarrod Carluccio and Alex Gersbach, with Gersbach introducing himself with an immediately yellow card for a heavy challenge. Perth emptied their bench with 10 to play as Nathaniel Blair & Anas Hamzaoui came on for Risdon & Wales. Misao had a third good look at goal with a left foot volley that flashed wide of the far post and left him struggling on the pitch with cramp. Juan Mata entered for the last phase of the match in place of Borrello.

Gersbach clunked a volley into the cross bar as regulation time expired the Wanderers were 4-1 ahead still but looking for more in the 4 minutes of stoppage time, they couldn't do so but it was still more than enough to pickup the three points with a 3 game winning streak as part of a 5 game unbeaten run that stretched back to the end of January. Auckland FC are the runaway leaders but the next 6 teams are within 3 points as the season heads into the climax.

The Wanderers have a bye next weekend, with the next match against Melbourne Victory in Parramatta on Saturday the 15th of March with kick-off at 7:30pm.

We need BB to get out of his funk and find his mojo again and with Milanovic back to add to our front line of today, that's an impressive forward line with goals in it :xnod: , thought Hammond was on fire today.

He just needs to score 1 rip snorter and he will get his confidence back. There was a point tonight where the ball got rolled to hit feet on the edge of the 18 and he should have taken it first time. He rolled it to hammond instead to gladly took the strike. He still one of the best in the team in open field on the break, he played some great passes and carved the field open tongiht, but he's shitting the bed badly in the final third.

If Borello can't get his form back he faces the bench next season. We are charging up the table with one fit, starting foreigner. We will be dropping the dead wood in 10 weeks and if we replace them with another striker, it wont be Sapsford riding the pine

Do we dare to dream?  I will wait until after Victory.  We play some good stuff but still look dodgy in defence.  Borello is a hard watch at the moment, he is working hard though so hopefully it changes for him, Cleur really deserved that assist, bit of regular football is showing what he can do. Plenty of good players but let's not kid ourselves Perth away are not a real test. The fact we are even worried about making semifinals still with the position we are in is just a sign of how bad we have been for a very long time, just when I think we might be on the improve we always manage to **** it up somehow.

Brilliant performance by Hammond, thought he deserved a hatrick at the very least.

Never thought that I would see that Bonnetig and Panta being our settled CBs. I can't see Joong making his way back into the team even after he is fit.

Sapsford is like our new Santalab, being that menace of a player, getting in the face of the opposition defence and fighting to win the ball off them.

Our midfield was sort of rattled after Scicluna's season-ending but Priestman has stepped up since the injury and the midfield looks a little bit more stable

We are finally playing with a bit more direction, we are not playing those aimless long balls like we did at the start of the season but I can finally what Staj is implementing with this fast transition football.

We have a big game in 2 weeks against the vucks at home. This would be a big test.

Probably the player I've been most impressed by in terms of breaking what I thought was their skill ceiling. We've all known for a while that Sapsford was a weapon who needed time, Panta has a heart the size of a horse and that Hammond is an absolute live wire.

Priestman has stepped his game up considerably in the last 3 weeks. I still maintain that if there was a stat for tackles in the opposition third, Priestman would probably lead the league.

Just on Borello....  correct that he's not in top form with the ball but his workrate in defence has been enormous.  Regularly tracking all the way back into our box to defend (although this may in fact contribute to his occasional clumsiness on the ball.... the fact that he's run himself into the ground).  His first touch was generally very good this game and he kept possession well playing out of defence.

The positive is that the rest of the team is picking up the slack in terms of goals. And its not like he isn't involved he is 2nd in assists with 7. Gabriel Cleur is next for us at 5.

But no goals since Adelaide. Just needs one to go for him, and its like you can't take him out of the first 11 because of the work he and Sapsford do together.

This appears top be mostly correct. @mack Gersbach is in the wrong year expiry. He signed a 2.5 year deal

Of those that are due to expire, we need to be keeping Cleur, Panta, LT and Sapsford. I heard rumblings of a long term extention on the horizon for Sapsford.

I wouldnt object to keeping Brillante, Laws, Holmes

I don't understand why we didn't get a bigger crowd yesterday.

    • The weather was perfect
    • We're playing good football
    • We had a big away win last weekend on the Central Coast

I hope we get a bigger crowd against the Victory

Sunday evening 5pm games are never as well attended as a Saturday evening. Plus people still holding out to see what happens before they make a victory game decision. People have been burned too many times…the trust will take a while to build back…

MV game is massive….best chance since moving back to the new place to win fans back.

It should also be noted that the fine work of the NSW Police, ably supported by the club, has permanently disengaged a good number of fans. First sign of the crowds coming back and they were at it again. And it will be positively suffocating against MV.

What happened with the police in the second half? I noticed the ACAB chant but didn't see the incident.

Sunday 5pm games are a pain in the ass.  If my motivation is low then your casual fan is no chance of rocking up. It’s gonna take a few years of sustained success for meaningful increases in crowd figures. The interest is there based on derby crowds but those people (whether you agree with their commitment or not) need an enticement to come back more consistently.

Keep in mind we are also in the graveyard shift of the aleague season right now. Feb through to finals is where general interest falls off a cliff and fatigue sets in. The footy starting then compounds it further. Until they can resolve this dead spot, the calls to extend the length of the season are delusional.

Sadly, I think the reality is that the stadium is too big for us. Scarcity of tickets at the old ground drove crowds and memberships which lead to huge hype. The FOMO in our first 4-5 seasons was enormous. It’s completely non existent now, even for the derby

The stadium is definitely too big. They need to block off some sections of the upper tier to push everyone down lower. The mian reason grounds like Auckland and Adelaide look so good is because they don't spread supports across so many seats. If it at least looked great in tv then those watching at home might want to join us.

It's also an Australian thing sadly. Mariners home games had poor attendance from the start of the season, which was well before it was confirmed that they have lost their mojo. That team over delivered for several seasons and won 3 trophies last season. If that didn't get the season tickets sold I don't know what will.

It is league wide although I think it's quite different for them and us.

Although the population is growing up there they don't have the potential we do. They can win GFs and there crowd will go up by a couple of thousand. If we win 2 in a row we will get ten thousand more

The family did want to go for this one especially with the sales on. But we had something on that was at the same time as the game. I only saw bits and pieces of the 1st half before tuning in for the 2nd half. Just one of those days.

I think with the recent reports of 'crowd violence' but never has been proved that they were football fans, it sort of trickles down to other supporters as police just use whatever necessary force against the fans

i hope the club does the ticket offers again for Victory - it just needs to be advertised how much of a run we are on and victory fans are travelling - really need to pump this game up

15k is achievable IMO - but anything below 10k is a disaster

a shame because Victory at home 10 years ago was as good as a derby

I dont get their approach sometimes. I sat there and watched two of them get in the face of a couple twelveish year old for stood on their seat and celebrated during a goal. Was right beside the RBB. Instead of a measured approach they walked them out and took their details down before removing them...

Do we know what the crowd was? looked pretty basic despite being in the top 6 and also the ticket offer of 4 for $40 plus the westfield offer of 4 free tickets for being a westfield member!

The RBB has basically been resorted to one bay and a huge factor is the overpolicing and security presence just for being a paying customer.

People finally get over it and stop attending active or decide alltogether to stop going to games. Why fork out hundreds of dollars a season year after year to be treated the same and not have any end result on or off the field.

There's no point really having supporter marshalls and the rest as a cop who's looking for an excuse will find one and will not give a damn rats ass if a marshal or club/venue seccie intervene.

If you get kicked out for something silly or even not your fault, fight it, take the court option, many have before and been sucessful. Don't let them stand over you, their job is to protect us not intimidate us.

According to this site it was 7359.
