  • Wanderers Storm Melbourne For 3 Points

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have played a cracking second half to take a magnificent 2-1 win against Melbourne Victory tonight. The Wanderers opened the scoring with a 25 yard wonderstrike from Keanu Baccus, doubled their lead with a wonderful long range effort from Alex Meier and held on for the win after Victory pulled a goal back with a Ola Toivonen penalty.

Western Sydney had the best of the first half despite going into the break level. The home side had the first major chance of the game in the 20th minute as Andrew Nabbout broke down the right hand flank, managed to get enough room to fire in a shot that Daniel Wilmering deflected towards the near post requiring a good save from Daniel Lopar to knock it out for a corner.

There was a touch of controversy midway through the half, Alex King pulling up the Victory defence for an illegal challenge just outside the area, blowing his whistle right as Alex Meier turned and unleashed a volley from 20 yards out that had Lawrence Thomas beaten completely, banging off the crossbar and into the goal, ruled out because the referee hadn't played advantage.

The game sparked into life in the second half, shortly after the break neat interplay from the Wanderers gave Sullivan a chance to chip a ball over the Victory defence for Mo Adam who played a cut-back in the direction the ball had come from for a charging Baccus and the midfielder fired in a first time missile past the full length dive of Thomas in the Victory goal. The curling strike found the top corner and he wheeled away in a deserved celebration.

Alex Meier capitalised on the excellent work of Mitch Duke who forced a massive error between Thomas & fullback Roux, they nearly collided and Thomas' failed clearance bobbled to Meier, 25 yards out from goal with no-one but a solitary outfielder on the line to beat, Meier's class showed as he lobbed Thomas and placed it well enough to get past Donachie on the line.

Melbourne came back fighting despite being two down and they drew level after receiving a lucky penalty for a Dylan McGowan handball as he tried to challenge for a header. Toivonen calmly slotted the well struck penalty past Lopar despite his dive going the right way. Melbourne hammered and pressed for an equaliser until the dying seconds but they couldn't get past the stout Wanderers defence. The win was the first time in the A-League that the Wanderers had picked up 6 points from the first 2 games and it puts them three clear at the top of the table pending the other games in the round.

The Wanderers next game is against Sydney FC at the Western Sydney Stadium at 7:30PM on Saturday October 26.

Just saw the post match celebration - the big fella quickly got into the spirit of WDWSF - so good to see.

Hope it's another post-win celebration against those blue muppets this weekend.

“You also have to learn winning again, because last season we lost more than we won. We also have to learn the winning, to be fair the boys did a fantastic job.”

He added: “We were 3-1 up against City and lost 4-3, we were 3-1 against Perth, we lost 4-3. We always found a way to lose.

“Now we find ways to win. Every win helps us a lot to get more confidence and to believe in our strengths.”

    Nailed it.

I think he really challenged the guys on the park in the second half to close the match out and make no further subs, even if it risked being a draw, the benefits of them holding out would be too good of a valuable lesson for those players. Especially the likes of Baccus and Willmering and a youngster trying to break through in Sullivan. All they have ever known is how to collapse until then.

They were terrible seats at the Adelaide GF though. The only way you could see the important bits of action was to turn around and look at the big screen directly behind us. That is the reason i was turning around :D

You're right - it was a hopeless venue for watching football - so maybe I was doing the same as you.

Loving the positivity in this thread, some really nice combinations that have come together in terms of our team, fitness, combinations, a dependable goal keeper (how long since we had one of those), mentality, youth, quality visa players, the senior/youth mix, not conceding towards the end etc but I am not getting carried away with things even though things are looking good in the first two matches.

Victory were horrible, possibly the worst victory performance  I’ve seen against us, in many years. I appreciate that you’ve got to beat the team in front of you but I find it hard to extrapolate that too far out for a top 6 rival. Add in that we were gifted that second goal.

I feel the drop off towards the end was natural, 2-0 lead you tend to sit back a bit & Victory’s double change. A contributing factor would have  match fitness but it concerns me the way in which the game ended

We have essentially changed in almost every aspect from last (three) season(s) & it’s a massive change but I feel it’s too early to talk trophies. Not willing to get too over the top too early, long season ahead.

In the post match Babbel mentions switching from a 3 to a 4 due to fitness of players & Meier. I think last week it showed that with the mobility of Meier how isolated he got up top. Again reinforced with Aussie Pat that his knee is fine but doesn’t want to play him sporadically, once he is back he is first choice & doesn’t want to be subbing or taking him off, with our depth in this position it makes sense.

Hey Prydz, if you love positivity then you might give it a try yourself some time.

You saw a horrible Victory Friday, while others saw a very strong WSW performance for much of the game. Kurz is under the impression that WSW "stayed very compact", and unless I am mistaken: VIC didn't create anything outstanding in the last 20, 25 minutes. So, no, I don't share your concerns.

in he build up to the match MB spoke about the challenge of tuning the training intensity, and I'd say that coaching group was spot on with tactics and physical preparation, and it made the difference.

VIC's late signings for midfield Basha, Dobras, Poulsen only did part time shifts, and Traore was left out altogether. With those four on the pitch for 90 minutes VIC will be a force even without Hoogland and Kruse.

In contrast, our late arrivals Jurman and AMFG played for 90 minutes each, Sullivan has fully recovered from his pre season injury, and Yeboah was fit enough to be subbed on late in the game. Importantly, we had our main man in midfield on the pitch. The absence of Kamau, Elrich, Ziegler and Mueller did not matter.

As far as the title talk is concerned: when Ziegler got off the plane in June, he was very clear what he wants to achieve this season. Rest assured that Schwegler, AMFG, Majewski/Mueller, Dylan Mc, Jurman, Lopar, Georgievski did not join to come second. The same applies for Duke and Yeboah. The club at large, coaching group and players - they all want to win.

I thought I read somewhere that NM flew in last week. Looks like I was wrong. Reports say he's not due to touchdown until Friday and is not expected to play this Saturday.

Not sure where else to put this but......

I know Mack is a massive control freak when it comes to opening match threads.

But surely, this week, the first derby back at our true home, the thread could be opened a little earlier than normal. There's too much discussion going on in a multitude of other threads about this match that should all be contained in one game relevant thread. **** waiting till Thursday or Friday.

    I'll leave now.

    :hi:

The logic of when Mack puts up the thread is like when your wife offers sex out of the blue

you cannot explain it and just take it when it comes

    put the thread up!
we’re horny as **** right now and it’s only Monday

I’d only get a couple of threads a season if that was the case

@mack could I suggest a general form thread? Or a season thread maybe?

Theres plenty of discussion to be had outside of specific game threads

Like I said in another thread, if you show you desperately want the new match thread the longer Mack will take to start one :D

You could always try starting the derby match yourself of course...it might last 10mins if lucky though.

usually open the match threads up when I get around to updating the last matches & player databases, because when I don't, I end up with a huge backlog and have to do a bunch in the off-season in a row which is annoying. And because I'm a lazy git, that sometimes takes a while.

I'll see what I can do about opening up the new match thread tonight.

@Upthehill Perhaps we could 'repurpose' the Babbel thread to be a general season posting thread?

I said this towards the end of last season when i could see MB was on the right track with the club not in terms of on field performances but in the back end. He knew what he wanted for this season and the players he wanted to keep on, had an idea of the type of players he wanted to bring in and here we are now.. Bright future ahead if all goes to plan!
