  • Wanderers Win 1-0 In Newcastle

    mack

Mark Bridge looped the ball over the head of Mark Birighitti to give the Wanderers all three points in their away trip to Newcastle overnight.

In front of a crowd of 16,634 that included a large contingent of away supporters it was Newcastle captain Ruben Zadkovich who had the first chance of the game. A flick-on from Adam Taggart broke the Wanderers central defensive line, Zadkovich shot past the diving Nikolai Topor-Stanley, but his shot was weak and Wanderers keeper Ante Covic turned the ball away with his left foot.

The Jets were on top for the opening half-hour but couldn't get their dominance to pay dividends. Like so many times before in football, it was the team who could withstand pressure who took the lead.

Newcastle failed to clear their lines, Aaron Mooy spread the ball wide to Shinji Ono. The Japanese international delivered a perfect cross over to the far post toward Labinot Haliti who took advantage of his opposing number misreading the flight of the ball to nod it back across the face of goal to the back post. Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti looked to come and claim the ball but he faltered and baulked, allowing Mark Bridge the easiest of headed tap-ins into a gaping net. Newcastle appealed in vain for both a foul from Haliti & an offside from Mark Bridge, neither were warranted or forthcoming.

Western Sydney held the lead until half-time and for the rest of the match. Newcastle applied pressure late on but weren't able to force a clear opening, while the Wanderers were unable to land a knockout 2nd goal.

Jaushua Sotirio was named in the match day squad for Western Sydney and he made his debut coming on for Youssouf Hersi in the 77th minute.

The win put the Wanderers 4 points clear of the chasing pack comprised of Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory & Newcastle, although Sydney FC defeated Melbourne Heart on Sunday to bridge the gap between the two Sydney sides to 1 point. Brisbane remain firmly ensconced in 1st place with a 5 point lead.

The Wanderers next match is on Monday the 23rd of December, 7:00PM against the Central Coast Mariners at Parramatta Stadium.

Great to get another win on the road. Although we didn't dominate the game, our performance overall was much better than in the last couple of weeks. Although Hersi wasn't at his best, his tight combination play with Polenz was clearly returning and I think this was one of the main reasons for the improved team performance.

The RBB was brilliant- loved seeing you guys bounce around for A Call to Arms.

Still don't think we're are where popa will be happy with but a win against an in form jets is Avery good outcome.

Hersi just wasn't allowed to play and was man marked by a very fast and up and coming left back.

Jets are young and quick right across the park and once we seen off the initial assault we pretty much controlled the game.

We know about Dapuzzo issues and Jets exploited that for all they could. I think it's obvious that the starting back 4 is Poppas preferred choice.

Juric will be a massive positive when he come back but I still think popa isn't happy with his 6 8 10 performances. I felt that Poljak is getting close to best form but Mooy and Ono still have some improvement left.

Good win. More space between us and 3rd.

Solid day love the Newy trip, not the best football played by us and  though Hersi was relatively poor i still thought we were strong on that side with Polenz having a good game. A vital 3 points for us with Brisbane putting the pressure in the prior game.

Do you wear the home jersey with 'Malone' and number 55? Geeing up your mates the whole time to chant and they weren't interested at all. If only more people shared your passion haha, very good form!

Anyway... our apparently much-maligned LB had an on-off night, though there were several times he was caught out of position, there were other times he did very, very well.

Other than that, Bridge and Haliti were the pick of the outfield players - they stepped up in a big way. Hopefully we can put CCM to the sword next week!

    My thoughts:

    RBB

    - great pub choice, packed in there well, shame they couldn't have a few more tables outside or something!

    - March was good! Especially when we were walking under the grandstand and the tunnel like cavern just made it sound 10x louder!!

    - great chant choice, duration could have been good but not sure

    Game

    - First 20mins we were sloppy, not holding it on upfront, midfielders losing the ball and defense looking shakey. Definitely exploited the left wing with those three chances all coming down the side but felt some blame should be laid at Bridges feet not dropping back helping d

    - we were lucky they didn't have burns or hesky playing, could have made the difference for them

    - covic was boss during the first 20m, really got tested and his quality shone through

    - give d'apuzzo plenty on here and I'm sure carney rumors probably don't help. But gee I thought he had a barnstormer of a game, in that second half didn't give an inch!! Hope he can build on it going forward!

    - love mooy in that deeper lying midfield position, his distribution from that position gives us so much when we are building out attack. Poljak had a very solid game

    - Thought Hersi had an average game, every time he had a poor touch/pass/shot/cross I thought "you think that you're worth 500k with that?" Didn't fool his man too much, couldn't control the ball well but I feel his substitution was tactic based rather than he wasn't playing well.

    - happy that bridge scored, hopefully this will be a turning point for him with those shots heading in rather than hitting the post... But wouldn't give him my man of the match

    - didn't think Ono was amazing but did play a good game, haliti had a good game really started coming into it in the second half and thought solhito the young kid played really well but you can tell intensity wise he needs to build, keeping mind that he is our youth, it's perfect

    - thought the subs were brilliant from Popa, the Newcastle wing backs were bombing on and our wingers solhito and appiah were brought on to do a defensive job and counter attack when possible with bridge playing the number 10

    - though I would love to see megsy have a run in the team, both Spira and NTS were immense giving Newcastle no clear cut opportunities in that second half when we shut up shop

    - overall, happy with the defensive performance but I think attack wise we are a bit behind where we were last season but at least something we can work on going forward!

    Ref

Thought the ref in the first half was good in the first half but second half made some really average calls. Our controversial goal, gee if that was a free kick then what happens when corners get taken? Brown should have got two yellows but thought the keeper picking up the ball outside the box was technically preventing a goal scoring opportunity so technically was a red card. But hey, we have had some red card challenges our way so yeh

The incident with Birighitti wasn't 'technically' a red card, it was a red card.

He handballed outside the area, in a manner that denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

Birghitti misjudged the roll of the ball, and his body shape was all wrong, if he hadn't picked it up there was no chance he could have kicked the ball at all, and the ball would have been either tapped forward by Haliti OR Birighitti would have missed it completely, giving Haliti a tap-in for a goal.

If the ball was in the air and Birighitti had stopped the ball from going past him with his hands (instead of say, heading it clear) while Haliti was rushing onto the ball no ref in the world would have given just a yellow, so why should a ball being on the ground mean it's not a red?

As I say technically, its hard to disagree but it was the referee's interpretation. He got the yellow for a professional foul perhaps in the referee 's interpretation he thought that the keeper could have got the ball somehow or it definitely wasn't a 100% goal scoring opportunity.

I don't know, ill compare it to the polenz tackle on Mabil in the Adelaide game at home. Referee saw the tackle, thought he was going for the ball no malice involved but still a professional foul. I think technically a challenge at knee height accident or not, is definitely at least dangerous and therefore technically deserved a red.

There is a huge difference between an OGSO red card and a bad tackle red card.

But I was just trying to argue the technicality of the call but in saying that it has come down to the referee's interpretation which is why it wasn't red.

pretty sure a proffesional foul of any kind is a straight red for a keeper.

Admin: Removed random talk about the so called "Fight". It wasn't a fight, some WSW randoms were giving it to the Jets as they walked out, then the cops walked into the Jets bay and started smashing people. The few people arrested were Jets supporter I believe. Nothing to do with us/RBB. Back to match talk please.

To confirm what happened you can read this link from the Newcastle Herald. Nothing more to talk about.

One area where we seriously need to improve.  Throw ins.  We don't pressure on theirs and invariably lose it either directly from the throw or we're under pressure and just clear to opposition.  Been bugging me the last few weeks.  Saturday was no different in this respect.

Just watched the highlights and while I was nervous because it was only 1-0 Newcastle really created nothing in the second half to justify coming back in to it.

I finally met the other Derby County supporter, NATO, at the game. He gave me three Papa Popa stickers and I was happy. Come the ACL most of what Popa has done with our squad rotation will make sense. We probably will not catch the Roar this season but they can have the Premier's Plate whilst we will beat them in the Grand Final. Otherwise, I think playing champion Asian clubs at Parra, will be memorable.

They've been scraping victories through sheer luck for several weeks - it'll run out soon. Plus, iirc, we have two home games against them - I think they'll capitulate nicely on our soil.
