  • Youthful Exuberance Can't Avoid Defeat

    mack

The bottom of the table contest between the Wanderers & Newcastle ended with Newcastle taking all three points in a scrappy but hard fought face.

Having just returned from their 0-0 draw in Korea and with another mid-week away fixture in Brisbane to come, manager Tony Popovic elected to send out one of the youngest starting lineups in A-League history. Daniel Alessi, Jonathan Aspropotamitis, Yianni Perkatis, Jaushua Sotirio, Alusine Fofanah & Steve Kuzmanovski all starting alongside Ante Covic, Iacopo La Rocca, Sam Gallaway, Jason Trifiro & Nick Kalmar.

Perkatis stepped up to provide the opening chance of the game for Sotirio. Perkatis latched onto a misplaced pass by Kantarovski, then launched a defence splitting through ball that put Sotirio clear through on goal, but his first touch took him wide and allowed Daniel Mullen to making a diving block that saw the ball deflect off the ex-Wanderers defender and hit the side netting.

Newcastle took the lead in the 21st minute, taking advantage of a horrendous goalkeeping error from Ante Covic. Edson Montano played in Enver Alivodic on the edge of the box. Ante Covic came flying out of his area and completely missed both the ball and man, giving Alivodic a saloon passage to take a composed touch before firing into the unguarded goal.

What made headlines around the world wasn't the eventual result, but a moment in the 31st minute with one of the most ludicrous offside decisions ever made in Australia, rivalling the "offside from a throw in" in a match between Brisbane & Melbourne Heart several years ago. Daniel Alessi was beaten for pace by Hoole, who delivered a cross that neither Covic or Aspropotamitis could clear. It bounced through the central defender to Montato for a tap-in, only for Sarah Ho running the lines to inexplicably raise the flag for offside. Montato was not just behind three Wanderers players (La Rocca, Covic & Aspropotamitis) but he was behind the ball player!

Just before half-time another error from Covic let Ki-Je Lee double the Jets advantage. A nicely worked overlapping run from Lee saw Gallaway up against two attackers, and when Andrew Hoole eventually released the Korean he arced in on goal then blasted a shot that had Covic committing the cardinal sin of goalkeeping, allowing himself to be beaten at his near post.

5 minutes after the break Nick Kalmar pulled a goal back for Western Sydney, converting a free kick over the wall and leaving Ben Kennedy standing on his heels with no chance of a save. He had another free kick chance from an almost identical position but this time he only found the side netting. Newcastle killed the game in the last 5 minutes very effectively, closing out the game with the Wanderers not having any real clear cut chances to score an equaliser.

The Wanderers are now back on the bottom of the A-League ladder and have been mathematically eliminated from the finals race. With 6 games to play the club are 19 points behind Melbourne City, and winning all 6 matches would see the Asian Champions reach 29 points.

The Wanderers next match is against Brisbane Roar, on Wednesday March 25th, in Brisbane.

Kuzi is one to hang on to.

As for the serial pest in 48, guess where I'll be parking myself next home match....

Well, hopefully he won't be there!

I'll head off somewhere else if he is!

    :)

the club better get to the situation before hawks does otherwise all hell will break loose.

I was in 48 for the first half and heard a fair bit of carrying on in the back row and security seemed to be not too far from them, but we went to the eastern half for the second. I had my kids with me so was reasonably distracted from them.

Haha...  First half there was chatter from the back row.... but that wasn't him  Whoever else was there were no problem to me. They might have been loud, but they were having fun....

He's not like that..... not at all. Nor is the brother.

He arrived probably half to two thirds of the way through the first half and was incredibly subdued.  I did hear him arrive with a "Hey looks who's bacK!!"  But he was calm and reasonable and not speaking at volume as he usually does.

Apparently security showed up at half time...he spotted them  made a few comments.... then disappeared and went closer to the front.

He came back really close to full time and did what he did... which  more or less cleared the row behind us....and lead to a few others sort of having words with him...which continued til after the game.

I didn't turn around to look at him People near me said he was "on somethiing"... not drunk as he often seems..... but off his face on something....which he didn't seem to be at the start.

PS  Sorry  to all of you bored with this convo.   It's useful to us in Bay 48 to find out  what others may have experienced.

I appreciate that one forumite has PMed me and passed on his observations in support of what my companions and I  experienced.

So...... F T you didn't see him in action if you weren't there at the end of the game.

I think it's appropriate that Hoole is going to Sydney, he looks like a grade A tosser in the making. Seb Ryall Jr...

He did enough to warrant a second yellow card in my "trying to be objective" opinion

He coughed up the ball at one point, and a few of us got up and gave him the finger shouting unpleaseantries. He looked up at us with this look of sadness. Like a little kid being picked on at school.

    I felt bad man...

    ...

Nah just kidding f-uck him LOL

I just dont know why Covic have to rush out of his box for the first goal when our defenders had those 2 Newcastle players covered.

He's making a habit in the back end of this season of ill-advised excursions out of the box. I'm worried about and for him. I know he has a history of brain snaps but he has been so solid while he's been with us. Something ain't right. In Ron We Trust.

I dont know What he is thinking. He was in beast mode on Wednesday night against FC Seoul. Stayed on his line and made some e really crucial saves. I thought he was finally coming back into form then he puts on a kamikaze performance  by rushing out of the box and was a statue for the second goal.

thanks for the info Wendy, i'll be there next match, not to punch on but if he needs to be dragged out and thrown out of the stadium to make him wake up to himself then that's no problem.

Thanks for the offer Hawks, but I think any attempt to see him out could get very unpleasant....for everyone...and I wouldn't want to see that.

I sense that this time the club will act... some people headed straight for the guys in suits and communications equipment from what I saw at the end of the game.... and there were two right by the Bay having him pointed out to them.....

I'm happy to leave it at that for now,

^^^^^ Yes to what Westsyd says...

"Be true to yourself. Being disappointed in others is wasted energy".... is so true!

10,000 is a piss poor figure for any A-league team that champions asia. It's embarrassing how fickle a lot of our fans are, this season was always going to be a mountain to climb with mental fatigue, travel and players injuries.

Seems like a lot of us don't give a **** unless there are results right in front of us.

Mick... it's human nature.... it was always going to be like this sooner or later.

have been there already wendy - supported the wolves through everything - bandwagon was full when they were winning and a broken down rust bucket as soon as they weren't. club has gone from one of the best in Australian football history to fighting relegation in the NSWPL every year and battling to stay as a going concern.

I think its all of our responsibility to push this message out there. If those of us here can't 'encourage' others to support the club in a more committed way then what do we do?

The club has a responsibility here in the culture it creates. It needs to show people that it's more than about the team, that this is about being part of something wider. That's not happening with the new owners.

It is also something that the rbb need to do as well. I don't get why anyone is on the rbb who don't have this attitude. Too many heads down. Sure you want the team to be better and all that but active support should be the vanguard of thick and thin. It's what the Poznan is all about for God's sake. How many people were doing the Poznan all those matches who are now not coming because of the teams performance I wonder.

Enjoy yourself Ffs. You're out with your people your community watching a game and a team who represent us... and a team that thanks to the way our league works will bounce back again at some point guaranteed.

To add to that I think we should be singing before games again.

    Just have a party.

    Who ******* cares?

I get looks all the time in Bay 1 West stand when I sing along with the RBB. There is zero atmosphere in that damn bay. Sure they jump up when we score, or more frequently these days when we almost score, but otherwise its Dullsville. I put it down to people being too self conscious about joining in / showing some passion. Surely active fan support, be it in the active section or in the stands, is what sets us apart from the other clubs, not the least the smurfs.

At the risk of being heretical or saying something that would be howled down, why not try him up front either as a sole striker or perhaps as a left forward with Kerem on the right?

    play 2 up front?

The thing that really p*sses me off is the people that sit next to me in Bay 48. Typical bandwagon supporterers. I think for only 3, maybe 4 games this season, they have turned up. Other than the two derbies and the first home match of the season, they havent turned up. I hope after seasons end when we get the spoon, these people can **** off and spend there money elsewhere and someone else that actually wants to support the team week in, week out can take there seats.

With all the losing that's going on there is one thing we are the best at and we have total control over and that's having the best supporters in the league. Besides the RBB's efforts we are losing that too. Need to drill that message home.

The people in the south terrace are keen but will never be active supporters, I wasn't aware how much lag there is between when the RBB chants and how long before you hear it at the other end, that's a big problem in trying to get whole stadium chants going.

Pretty sure one of the players came down for a visit at one stage too, the players not in the lineup are more than welcome to come join us in Bay56 for a change though, come on down guys !

But can this group of players get us a toilet seat given a proper pre season Hopefully back to our rightful place or will popa regenerate again I reckon we just need an inform number 9 that isn't so isolated

Still feels like our bay gets the numbers.

Yes...Still looks full in 48 everywhere but the back 3-4 rows, where there have always been some gaps to be honest.

On a different day Perkatis would have been the most junior player in the squad.

As much as I enjoy seeing young players step up: I hope we'll never see the day again when one 19 yo, one 18 yo, and three 17 yo guys play together in the senior squad.

Perkatis and those five, how many A-League games have they under their belts, between the six of them? A dozen?

    1. ruyka has a touch of a fkwit, I will personally see him off at the airport when he signs for another team. should have gone to perth.

    2. for the love of God please drop covic for the remaining games and put bouzanis on or even promote the youth keeper. covic is a hero at WSW but even hero's turn crap and that's why he is doing. committing to balls he cant save.

    3. all our young guns, (sotiro, kuzamanski) will be solid after a year or two. need to sign and keep them as they look really good.

    4. Kalmar needs to sign longer term, one of the best in a losing team.

suit up for Wednesday and see if we can get a point at least

time and time again mate, this guy has had the ball come to his feet only to either take multiple heavy touches that either sees the ball dead or into the arms of the keeper. When It looks like he has a shot he doesn't take and fair enough he has scored twice this year but doesn't make up for the fact that he cant keep the ball at his feet.

he has speed to burn but has no presence to be onside, as I thought would be standard for a winger?

doesn't inspire fear in opposition wingers, they have field days on him.

he has some sort of talent but fk me he is just as painful to watch as golec.

On the ruka debate, look at Lloydy's post earlier in this thread and he hits the nail on the head. I know he is taking up a big portion of the cap but let's put out Sotirio, Fofanah or Kuzi out in the side now in his position. He is a very frustrating player for us this season and let's hope that the youngsters can get the opportunity to get some experience for next season.

I think this was a result of having so many of our first team out at the moment, many of the players that would have been rotated in after the exertion of Wednesday night were unavailable so we didn't have much choice in the matter. In regards to putting in essentially 6 youth team players in the side I think there is a few theories on why he played such a young team:

    - A big middle finger to the FFA to pretty much say if this is the schedule you give us, we will put out a third XI in order to give our players a rest. It doesn't matter to us but can play havoc when the top five positions are so close, it will be a lottery which side we put out. Whether it be extended squad size for acl participants or working out the schedule to load more fixtures towards the start of the season to prevent the congestion caused at the end of the season, something needs to be done.

    - There has been a lot of media pressure on Popa signing older aleague journeymen instead of going for youth. Hopefully after our performance in the first half minus substitutions of Golec & Yojiro, it just shows that it is very difficult for us to be competitive without experience & quality in the side. This coming against a Newcastie side that has struggled against every other team in the competition but we're made to look like barca the way we played. Yes, let's bring in youth players but not more than 3-4 at a time who can play with those more experienced & quality players to guide them. Hopefully now we won't see everyone (fans & journalists alike) asking for youth players just thrown on to be put out for lambs to the slaughter.

    - He wants his best XI rested for the ACL midweek games. Is he saving his best team for mid week fixtures and will rest or rotate for the weekend matches in regards to the rest of the season? Certainly makes sense if he plays a strong XI mid week against Brisbane but then the match on the weekend against Perth away he plays another young side.

As much as we would like to think they take notice, I don't think the FFA give a f*ck.

2 A league teams compete in the ACL each season, our schedule would've been no different had we not competed in the CWC, which was a huge anomaly.

If anyone is expecting any compensation, or even am apology, from the FFA, don't hold your breath.

There's a difference between finding a player "frustrating", and outright calling them a f*ckwit.

To me - it's fine calling a player frustrating, but calling them a f*ckwit simply because they don't play how you think they should???  That's a bit rich, and totally uncalled for IMO.

I think the FFA gave us no chance of winning the ACL when the original fixtures came out lol They certainly didn't notice that the first game back after the CWC would be a trip to NZ and then Perth!  That is as bad a post ACL combination as we could possibly have been thrown.
