  • Popovic Abandons WSW On Brink Of Season

    mack

Tony Popovic has dramatically exited the Western Sydney Wanderers a mere week out from the opening of the 2017/18 A-League Season

Reports have indicated that Popovic received & accepted a shock offer from Turkish side Karabukspor, a  inconsistent, occasionally relegated side who have gone through coach after coach in the past 5 years. His tenure at the Wanderers resulted in the club becoming the first ever Australian winners of the Asian Champions League, while domestically his output was less than expected after he failed to add to the single A-League Premiership the club won in their inaugural season.

After rejecting multiple offers from clubs in England & China after winning the Asian Champions league, he has finally accepted what appears to be a quite mediocre club for his first major opportunity overseas. The awful timing sees the Wanderers scrambling to find a replacement manager to take charge of the Round 1 fixture against Perth Glory.

One minor benefit for whoever the new coach will be is that unlike previous seasons, the Wanderers recruited well & early, putting together a strong squad with all 5 foreign spots filled early into pre-season. The benefits have shown as the Wanderers have made their way into the FFA Cup semi-finals and have been touted as a top 4, if not top 2, squad in the A-League.

It is likely that Wanderers chairman Paul Lederer & CEO John Tsatsimas has already potentially scouted new staff as Popovic's contract was expiring at the end of the season, and the obvious targets include Ante Milicic, currently an assist with the Australian National Team, Josep Gombau, who is in charge of the Australian U23/Olympic team. Should the club want to look to promote coach from the NPL they could seek out the services of Mark Rudan, Chris Taylor from South Melbourne, or Mark Crittenden from Blacktown City. Ian Crook will run the club in a caretaker fashion until an appointment is made.

Ultimately the club will need to move forward quickly from the "Popovic Era", find a coach that can bring quick success to a club that has not won a title for the past 3 seasons. Popovic's style was highly authoritarian, and said to be total control over the football side of the club. It will be an adjustment for the players & staff regardless of who takes over the role, and whoever wins the job will have high expectations from day one.

Popovic will be a scapegoat at Karabükspor.

I dare say these talks between Popovic, Carrasco & Kalac had been happening for weeks, if not longer. I don't buy the "10pm phone call on Saturday" bullshit.

He's done a lot for this club that no one will be privileged to match but this is a judas/dog act.

I'm in the thanks popa you've earned it club. I've enjoyed almost every minute of it - ill never forget the ACL final and being outside the town hall. My regret is I didn't to the Airport.

My only concern would be if there are any players he might take in the January window. I guess we can worry about that down the track.

I went to airport was near back waited hours saw a glimpse of santa and topor for 2 seconds that was it haha

was hectic listening doing those chants thought in closed environment was like walking into newy

Happening for weeks, if not longer? The previous coach only resigned on the 24th of September. Which, due to the time difference, was the 25th here in Sydney.

I don't think he was first approached at 10pm on Saturday either. I'm guessing that's when they agreed terms and they made a formal offer. Which is what he meant when he said 'it came up at 10pm last night'.

I think if someone actually asked this maybe he would have confirmed

he said in his presser the offer came at this time.

Harsh use of the judas term

had a handshake agreement with his boss to leave when an offer came up and he's turned down many before it would seem. Also always said he wanted to coach in Europe

judas would be going to smurfs would it not?

    Think of it like this:

(1)The club knew he wasn’t going to be here forever

    (2) The chairmen made an agreement that if the right offer came along for Popa that he was right to go

This wasn't a decision made out of the blue, his ambition to test himself overseas was clear, it was the sudden nature that caught everyone by surprise. No rumors being spread of an offer or an approach.

    ————————

Had he discussed with his other coaches that if he went overseas would they come with him, probably? Let’s not turn this into some massive conspiracy theory, unless you have something to suggest otherwise

    Disagree

Fox is always the guy who works with the new players fitness so knows every player.

His record is impeccable starting with Blacktown Demons, AIS, Ajax, sanfrecce Horishima, West Ham, loan KB Mechelen, Portsmouth, Leeds, Perth Glory, Smurfs  plus former Socceroo at youth and senior level.

Managed Melbourne Heart yourh, assistant at heart in 2013 and joined WSW in 2015.

I just know Foxe for his bad dress on the sidelines. At least Crook has experience to help him.

A man has got to do what a man has got to do.

Make that a year or two. Popa will not be killed off by a scheming local assistant coach (like Arnie in Japan) if he can help it.

The late Saturday offer triggered the exit clause for the three of them. That's what it looks like right now anyway.

Having this happening four weeks ago would have been better, but in another four weeks it would have been worse. It is what it is now.

At least from the caretaker decision, we know that Crook and Foxe aren't being considered for permanent head positions

Depends on how they go, unbeaten in say 5 and sitting top of the HAL it might be hard to do otherwise, chance for Foxe and Crook to prove they have what it takes, can't see them being anything other than caretakers though somehow. Lederer and co will have in mind who they want regardless of early results I suspect.

I don't mind Foxe having a go, I hope he is up to it. He is a Westie at least so that counts for something.

He used to play for Nepean Districts back in the day and even back then he was a gun. He probably doesn't remember me but we used to kick the ball around while our brothers were both playing for Blacktown City. He gets no free passes, he stuffs up, he still gets an ear bashing :D

Thought he was only here because of Kalac. Though I cant really see him going anywhere else besides back to Sydney.
