Good luck chasing that bigger pay packet Aaron!! You're a bit of a fool if you think that you're going to grow/get better playing for Newcastle/heart who fight to get into the top 6 every year! Good luck!

I think we f*cked up. Mooy definitely is good enough to be our Aussie marquee.

I disagree. An Aussie Marquee should be filled by a player who is an Aussie international. Mooy was a fringe player at best in the national set up and has regressed somewhat since his East Asian adventure. Mooy is an ok player but he will not make it in Europe and he is not worth the dollars of an Aussie marquee spot. I dont expect him to make any impact at the heart, so the pressure will really be on for him.

although he was good tonight, one good game does not justify a new contract

its too soon to call if we've ****ed up or not

Not one game, he has been quite solid the last few games.

still not good enough. Spira is at the level that would warrant a marquee contract.

Still, it will be sad to see Mooy go :(

I 100% agree, Spira is just a class above anyone in our squad and is ideal for the Australian marquee spot.

I disagree, mooy has really excelled when he has been given the room and the freedom to play his passing game. This has been seen with Spira and poljak tonight that when he has someone doing more defensive work it allows him to take his game to another level. If go farther and say that mooy is probably on par as the best attack minded centre midfield in the league.

The only way he is going to take his game to another level is if he goes overseas but it really depends on him whether he succeeds or not. Will he just go overseas and sit on the subs bench or is he going to make a difference? As I have harped on to no end (in the mooy thread), a move to another worse off aleague club will not take his game to another level.

Spira is obviously a class above Mooy but Spira is almost 100% good as gone next season, too good to be in the A-League.

You know its funny, I hear what you're saying and I have agreed with that sentiment previously.

For sure we should be realistic and yep, he looks likely to leave and is a class above and all those things.

But ( and not directed at you mate at all, I've been thinking this a bit lately in general ) we collectively need to stop thinking this way.

Its the Broich's, Ono's, Berisha's, Polenz's, Spiranovic's that we need in this league if we are to become a better league. We need these guys and more of them. Eventually their impact could change the league to the extent that we as fans expect a certain standard and it could be recognised accordingly. It has to start somewhere and I think it already has started but our game has enough detractors without us adding to it. Again not having a go, and I understand being realistic about things too. Just an observation.

The difference between Spira and all the other guys you mentioned is that Spira is one of our best young defensive prospects who IMO needs to be playing in a higher quality league than what the A-league provides. It helps our national team for him to be playing at a better level. And anyone with his talent would want to test themselves against the best possible opposition.

The other players you mentioned are more the type of players we can attract and retain. Either coming towards the end of an illustrious career (a la Ono), or the guys that didn't quite make it in their home countries/Europe (due to the sheer number of players of a similar standard in said countries). These players (a la Broich, Berisha, Polenz et al) are more suitable for our league because they're a big fish in a smaller pond, and can play regularly and be in the spotlight much more so than they would at home.

The A-league, for the foreseeable future, should be a development area for our young talent, with a mix of slightly superior foreigners and legends near the end of their careers. The best Australian players should always test themselves elsewhere, IMO. But if they aren't of that quality, they can make a successful career on home soil (players like Bridge/Cole etc.).

Of course I want the A-league to have the best teams and players possible, but we need to be realistic of where we sit in the world pecking order. The best players from lower European leagues such as Belgium/Switzerland et al all move on to higher levels too.

You can hardly blame Mooy, even though he didn't have the greatest of games when he came on. The whole dynamic of the team changed when NTS got injured. As soon as he went off I was praying that Beauchamp could slot in but I don't think he was even on the bench. The reason was because LaRocca was such a boss in midfield. He was simply immense, a totally dominant display and he was my best on ground. As soon as he slotted in the centreback spot we were looking vulnerable. Even when we were 1-0 up with 5 mins to go I wasn't feeling too confident.

ABSOLUTELY GUTTED.

Nope. Mooy had a shocker and didnt look like he was there. He was slow and late, missed passes, missed free kicks. No one can pass that responsibility to others. Loss of NTS did hurt, but that doesnt mean you cant use the ball. His yellow card was out of frustration and was determined before he even slid

I guess he can use this as big game experience. He will learn. Still a fan and thankful for what he's done for us.

Always have time for him as a Wanderer and as one of the foundation guys, but I think he's a bit like our own (younger) Nick Carle. For all the talk about his potential and skill on the ball there hasn't been the delivery needed to justify the patience for or, estimation of his (own) worth. I don't believe heading to Melbourne City will give his career that much of a fillip, particularly in terms of getting more and better service in the green and gold. Yet if he proves me wrong then good luck to the kid. Especially if he can overcome or get away from his own quiet and semi-shy personality to become someone who can impose their way on a game (as Shinji has done).

It all went down hill after the East Asian Tournament, ever since then he has not been the same player. Some of the problems that I see with Aaron are that he is a little slow.  He really needs to speed up his distribution and just simplify his game a little. Needs to look to go forward when he gets the ball, but he always seems to look backward and side to side as his first option. He needs to also work on his set pieces, too wasteful on corners and free kicks.

If he wants to play a number 10, he needs to get more vocal, direct traffic and move players where he wants them. Good luck to the kid though, managed to score himself a decent contract at the Heart, but the pressure will now be on for him to perform and to justify the dollars the heart have spent on him. Played some good games for us but needs to get more consistent performances out of his game, but that happens when your a young player. I will be interested to see how he performs in a different team dynamic but my thoughts are that the heart supporters aren't going to be that impressed.

I've got a lot of time for Mooy. Personally, I think his move to City is the right one (even though I am sad to see him go). I think he needs to be playing in his preferred CAM role, and maybe at City he will get a chance to shine (very dependent on who they bring in as international players/marquee). If he gets stuck as a #2 I don't think he will improve to the consistent level we know he can be capable of. I'd love to see him do well and push for a Socceroos spot, and playing his preferred position will hopefully help him get there (maybe City will utilise him in a CDM role anyway, it obviously depends on their formation and what Van't Schip thinks of him).

Are Heart/City fans impressed with anything (aside from themselves)? :ninja:

Nice analysis of AM's style/temperament Jukes. Aside from having his youthful age on his side one has to say his set piece work this season has been half-decent, and arguably when you have someone like Shinji in your team it is ***** hard to emerge from underneath such an imposing mantle. Question is, will he be given the precedence as a creative no.10 at Heart/City, and if so can he do more particularly in a club framework where the new owners may well parachute someone in from Europe at the drop of a hat either before or after he goes there.

He can pass, he also has a great shot from free kicks - yes, he could be a bit faster on the ball and more decisive, but the foundations are definitely there.

I was hell disappointed with him in the grand final, he would be one of our freshest players in the squad and when he came on he just didn't have the impact on the field. At times, especially leading up to the final goal I felt like he didn't have his heart in it! I know my assessment might seem harsh but I felt that he should have stood up and be counted rather than just roll over to lose the game.

That being said, he has been a great servant for us and he has had some outstanding matches in our shirt scoring some very important goals for us! I hope that he knows what he is doing leaving a top side moving to a club in transition. Will his career flounder as result of it being stagnant while city turn into a decent team, will his chances in a green and gold shirt go up playing in his preferred position or will the weight of expectation being on a big salary weigh him down or will his chance to move overseas to earn a bigger salary suffer because of playing with a side fighting for the wooden spoon! I just hope he moves for the right reasons and a few years down the track he doesn't wander what if I stayed!

The way I see it Mooy is no different to any one of a number players in our team. Good on his day but lacks consistency. Same could be said of Juric, Kubi, Hersi, Bridge etc. In general our defenders are the most consistent but are also prone to bad days.

Mooy was playing well for a lot of the back end of the season but didn't seem to fire in the grand final. I remember in the last Melbourne Heart game we won in Melbourne he came on and controlled the midfield. Changed the game. He could have a top ACL game tomorrow for all anyone knows. I think it best not to get too excited about any one player as having a blinder one week they are just as likely to do nothing the next week.

Juric has particularly frustrated me this season as he has so much potential and we were at our best when he was playing well. Hopefully we get more consistency next season.

Im a big fan of Mooy,

but a huge problem with him thats evident to me is his enthusiasm and determination to the club this season. I know people who have grown up with him and hes always been an introverted shy guy. This season i really think contract talks have had a negative impact on him, along with losing that starting spot etc and hes lost alot of the grit and will he showed much more of last season. Last season aswell as running the midfield with silky passes, he showed energy in defence, grit and character to fire up. this season the most ive seen him fire up was late in the final with a stupid reckless tackle or Broich.

I hope he gets back to his best at heart with a fresh start (not against us though) and pushes for another overseas venture. No Loss for us.
