  • Sydney FC Steal Last Parramatta Derby

    mack

Two set piece goals were enough to give a stubborn Sydney FC the victory in the Sydney Derby tonight.

The last Sydney Derby before Parramatta Stadium is knocked down was won by the visitors, despite being dominated in terms of possession and territory, took full advantage of two set piece opportunities while the Wanderers once again spent the majority of the game kicking the ball around the penalty box and not shooting.

Sydney FC launched a corner that went beyond the back post, was headed back in before being turned in by Jacques Faty. Their goal secured, Sydney FC parked a flotilla of buses, getting all 11 men deep into their own half in an ultra defensive display of stubborn anti-football.

Dario Vidosic managed to bring the game back to 1-1 with a superb curling effort before the hour mark. It looked like only one team could go on to win the match, but it was not to be.

When Topor-Stanley hauled down an attacker after letting him run far too close to the Wanderers penalty area, Sydney FC fired in a free kick that was once again knocked back down, this time for substitute Shane Smeltz to smash home unmarked at the start of stoppage time.

In most sports, a team who are dominant in terms of possession, territory and quality will win comfortably against the inferior team, as weight of scoring chances eventually tells to produce the expected result.

Football is not like most sports.

No, I mean as the conductors of Active support it is partially a responsibility to get the rest of the stadium to get involved. The RBB wanted the song to go over the PA to get the crowd involved and when the trumpet started etc, were out of time and singing at their own tempo. What was heard then were three versions of the song. The PA, the side stands and the RBB.

Surely, if you have the song going over the PA, you guys should sing it to the tune and tempo so that everyone else can follow and not go off and do your own thing just because you are the 'RBB'

i am curious however what did you mean by again it is about the rbb?? do you mean the chant is about us?

    Okay, a few things

Normally in the RBB you can't hear the PA. This was especially hard on the weekend behind (and under) the Tito. I'm not sure of the reasoning, but the drums did not play glorious. Now, that might have been so it was easier to keep in time with the PA (although my understanding was that that PA just played the trumpet line and then switched off anyway?) But the reality is even then it's still too hard to hear the PA on the north terrace. And no drums means the chant carries even less oomph imo. So if you put the drums back in, you've got less chance of following the PA!

This is why, for mine, if it's going to work, it's got to be - intro for the tune, then shut it off and let it happen.

Second to that, I'm not sure it was the RBB pushing for a walkout tune. I think it was the club. They've done the right thing and asked what we all think it should be and are trying to get it happening. Of course the most committed types have voted for glorious. And we can all dream of it being a big walkout song at the beginning, but I think it's there as a bit of a contrivance, and not under RBB orders as it were.

And responsibility.... I dunno. It's not a job. Conductors? I dunno. It's up to the sidestands to join in if they want to... they have as much responsibility then to learn words and tune etc if they want to as the RBB do to run the sidestands.

firstly i do not speak for anyone but myself and my views are my own.

it isnt the active supports responsibility to get the side stands involved if you want to get involved get off your ******* ass and get involved it is hard enough for boris to manage the tempo of the bloc(especially on derby day when so many are not regulars and with out the ******* mega) alone expecting him to be able to link all three is ridiculous.

the tempo will always be lagy when you are trying to get 20k people chanting at the same tempo. now your last line is just spectacular i dont know why you or many other side stand members think they have some right over the rbb as a group to tell us what and how to do things, do you see boris come in to the side stands and tell you what and how to do something every home game?? to say we do our own thing because we are the "RBB' is a serious insult like we do not care about the club, players or other fans and we do what we want when we want, to here that from other fans outside our club is one thing banter etc but from our members is disgusting again i speak for myself but every ******* thing i do on game day i do for my club the chants are always going to be about us, our club, the players etc because it represents us. you and aso many other feel they have some right to say what we shoudl do and how we should do it and voice your opion of us and how we support our club? but when i say to you i think sitting on your ass eating wanderdogs, drinking piss, booing when they play bad and clapping when they play well is not true support it is a pathetic attempt at being entertained and i do not go to football to be entertained i got to play my part in getting my club a victory, when i say that everyone gets upset but for some reason it is alright for you to tell us how we have to support the club and what we need to to do better

p.s before half of you have a coronary on here, my comments are to a few in the side stands i know alot of you are supporters and join in etc i only said it that harsh to prove a point

lol maroon said it much nicer i probs should have just read his comment first and left it there lol

Yep, we did our own thing and own tempo just because we're in the "RBB".

The RBB hijacked the walkout song and made it about them on derby day and mucked around with the tempo on purpose.

Something didn't work right on Saturday?

    Blame the RBB :cheeky:

In all seriousness, very hard for everyone to do it and it's up to them if they want to sing it. Learning the lyrics is one way, or the club can email the lyrics in their weekly newsletter or cringe it and get the lyrics on the screen.

Again, it is hard to hear almost everything that comes through the PA.

I think the real problem is that singing and chanting together as one large mass of people is not something traditionally part of the Australian sporting culture so it's still a very foreign concept to a lot of people. We aren't known for being an overly rhythmic/melodic society to begin with either.

It's all a matter of practice and time which could be a while when you consider the amount of people you see every match day who can't even clap in time haha It's definitely possible that we can get a whole stadium singing as one eventually though, it happens all over Europe, South America etc but they've been at it for years and for most it's a big part of the culture.

For me that's what made the atmosphere so memorable a few weeks ago against the Victory because the whole crowd were really starting to sing Melbourne boys are still number 2 as a whole and it was incredible.

    NTS is becoming a liability.

One thing I forgot....sorry folks but Glorious really isn't working as a walkout song.

I turned to my son just before NTS fouled for the free kick that sunk us, and said that NTS was likely to do something careless or dopey - call it deja vu, or just that he has started to lose his rag lately (look at the pen that should have been given a couple of weeks ago - schoolboy stuff). Not sure what's happening there, but he and Redmayne are affecting my heart regularly.

I agree that he's got the capacity to be a bit ropey, but I don't really think he was at fault for the foul. If he didn't pull him back he would have been through...we should never have conceded from that lofted ball in to the box. That said, Aspro is a better defender...but it's a bit hard to drop your captain, even though we've done it before. I think Topor is important for organisation and generally rallying the troops...those qualities can't be underestimated.

Never thought I'd see the day where he'd try to nutmeg someone on the right wing though.

I was at school a few years after they brought it in, the year 12's still wore "mufti" whereas everyone else wore the uniform.

That was locals - but when I finished school there was a lot of, "Where's that?  Where's North Rocks?"

I'd like to think that I have a rough idea of where most Sydney suburbs are haha.
