  • Wanderers Succumb To 3-1 Defeat In Brisbane

    mack

An early goal to Besart Berisha and two wonder strikes from Ivan Franjic & Kwame Yeboah have seen the Brisbane Roar defeat the Western Sydney Wanderers for the first time in 5 matches between the two clubs.

Matthew Spiranovic once again started in central defence for Western Sydney, with Captain Beauchamp left out of the match day squad despite having travelled to Brisbane. The Roar welcomed talismanic striker Berisha back after his injury issues and he had an immediate impact.

Before a minute had been played Berisha had made a mazy run through the heart of the Wanderers defence but fired wide. 4 minutes later he left Mateo Poljak, Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Spiranovic for dead as he tore through the middle of the park. Despite his first shot being blocked the ball fell kindly for the Albanian hit-man, and he turned the ball past Ante Covic to open the scoring.

Brisbane doubled their advantage in the 18th minute. Henrique tricked his way into the penalty box for Western Sydney, although he had the ball poked away the 'Slippery Fish' managed to scrap his way into knocking the ball into the path of Franjic. The trap attempt by Franjic was poor, but fortunately for him it bobbled into the air, he unleashed a volley from well outside the penalty area that evaded the diving Covic and nestled into the bottom corner.

On the half-hour Brendon Santalab benefited from a poor pass by Jade North that was intercepted by Mark Bridge who sent the ball into the path of Santalab. The first touch was poor but Roar keeper Michael Theo wasn't quick enough to stop Santalab from lofting the ball over Theo to bring the scores back to 2-1. Western Sydney's chances of winning the game took a big nosedive when Shinji Ono was replaced 5 minutes before half-time with a niggling injury, Labinot Haliti brought on for Ono and stayed in the central attacking midfield position.

Western Sydney were well on top in the second half but had little to show for it. On 67 minutes D'Apuzzo overlapped Mark Bridge then delivered a cross that Haliti looped onto the crossbar. It rebounded for Santalab who attempted an overhead kick but put it wide. The best chance of the half for Western Sydney came on the 80 minute mark. A corner from Mooy was cleared as far as Minniecon who hooked the ball back into the box. It rebounded off a sea of legs to Nikolai Topor-Stanley, his shot was blocked into the path of Haliti who fired first time, the ball would have rocketed past Theo if not for the intervention of a Brisbane defender who did just enough to stop it going through his legs.

Roar young gun Kwame Yeboah had been introduced into the game on the hour mark for the tiring Berisha, and he killed the game off in the 91st minute. He broke down the left wing, cut inside Topor-Stanley and with Jerome Polenz jogging backward not fast enough to make challenge, Yeboah fired a thunderbolt that was past Covic before he could react.

Despite the better performance after the two Roar goals it wasn't enough to draw level. Tony Popovic made some unusual tactical choices in this match. In the past when Ono has been replaced either Bridge or Mooy had stepped up into the central attacking midfield role, but this match saw Haliti take over ineffectively. When Dean Heffernan was introduced the Wanderers moved into an unprecedented 4-4-2 formation with Heffernan on the left wing. There will be calls for Shannon Cole to be replaced by Tahj Minniecon in the event Hersi is unfit yet again, and Cole, Heffernan or La Rocca may give D'Apuzzo a challenge for the starting left fullback role.

The Wanderers next match is against the Wellington Phoenix, at Westpac Stadium, Wellington, on the 1st of December.

I think judging from the responses, no one is panicking. I think we all recognise even begrudgingly that Brisbane are a very good football team. I believe West of centre raised a good point in an earlier post where he mentioned Brisbane players were willing to take on the Wanderers in one v one situations which would be a good way to break down our structures. That in itself would not be easy, so Brisbane came out and played a positive brand of football. No shame at all losing to Brisbane especially on their turf. I must admit the scoreline flattered them, probably 2-1 it deserved to be, but nonetheless what a top strike from Yeboah. Kids got skills.

So people think our defence would be tighter with Beauchamp instead of Spira?

    Thoughts?

I thought issue was more our defensive mid

It might be tighter, but unless Beauchamp has magical composure and ball control that I haven't seen before - we'd resort more often than not to hoofing it long.

Spira, from what I see, is not as strong in the air as Beauchamp, jury is out on who is the better tackler, but I know Beauchamp has more of a physical presence about him - a la Topor.

But Spira has composure and control on the ball, iirc, he turned several times in succession while under pressure in tonight's game, and only conceded a throw-in I think.

If we want to play out from the back more, and have more of the ball, we need someone who is good on the ball - and Spira is the best option we have at CB for that.

Who let the ESFC supporter in.?

The blue shirt caused a disruption to the ambience ...

    Waratahs jersey, people were saying.

But still, why wear the colour of our cross-city rival? :-/

We put 30 crosses in to the box in that game but had no one to capitalise on them.

This may be where we are missing Hersi who would run more at the defence instead of crossing.

Can we whip up a diss chant for Meow?

Then again they don't have a strong enough fan base to bring away support down to Parra to hear one anyway.

Attack of Cole Santalaab and Bridge is just woeful.

Yeah good point. I thought Bridge struggled to come into the game at times. Look ccedit to Brisbane.

Although we dominated most the match their defensive structure held firm.

Just to reiterate the importance of their ability to beat the man, you will notice say when Berisha did it (as opposed to trying to break us down by passing) it immediately meant one of our other players had to come away from the structure to meet the threat and we were exposed.

When it comes to passes we are good at been compact and shutting down the overloads or triangles.

    Individual brilliance - problem.

There was a Hello Kitty picture in a Roar jersey I saw somewhere here. That was pretty good.

I saw that I'm pretty sure that it had a Vodafone sponsorship on the front, the only team i can think of the the nz warriors that have Vodafone as a sponsor

I was tired of winning anyway

Yeh.. Winning is for losers...  :-)

    Winning is too mainstream

Those first 20 minutes reminded me of some of our games before the great winning streak. But the remainder of the game was something different yet again.

Makes you wonder how Juric and Hersi would've changed the balance if they were available.

We played poorly but they didn't give up. Players to come back, we were favouritesThe Den were laughable .... amateurish! It was funny seeing them up close, copying the Poznan. And their two main chants - Brisbane ..clap clap clap and spelling out Brusbane and then clap. Original!

Funny how losers look for distraction to avoid the truth of being loser.

They would have made more of the chances available I guess.  Cole was alright on the right for me and he's making the most out of what is slightly limited ability though some choices were wrong.

Defensively we need to have the mids dropping back to pick up the forwards if they drop off like Berisha was doing to great effect so the back 4 can maintain that line without being pulled out.  Poljak was in no mans land for the second when he should have been on the edge of the box for Franny's shot.  We were just not up to speed in the first 20 and we paid the price.  Otherwise Brisbane looked pretty average.

I actually think this was one of our better performances apart from the start against a decent footballing team.

On the positive I thought Mooy had a brilliant game so did Spiranovic probably best two for me

Yep thought so too mooy was excellent on the ball most of the night and Spira for mine continues to impress.

Like Manfred said throw in hersi, juric and Ono for 90 and it could be a different result

Its quite ironic the way we dominated possession for large parts against the ball keeping kings and end up losing. In all some encouraging signs and and credit to roar for taking their chances we didn't do that and so be it we lose

Great support by the away supporters! We will bounce back against nix

I thought the referee deserves credit as well in a season when we are constantly focussing on the officiating they all did really well.

I feel you guys are all kidding yourselves.

Brisbane very clearly dropped off after they scored 2 goals. We had some chances and Brisbane got away with it, we've had more then our fair share of luck in recent games so it's only fair.

They were always in control though and deserved the win.

Disappointing but a solid dig from the team - standard has been set for all other teams in the league.

Big effort from the away supporters too, great to see! :drinks:

Why is everyone bagging out the den? Many people are working hard at creating away end there, and its kinda working.

We need more strong home ends in the league to add some atmosphere to games.

On the game, I honestly think brisbane dropped off/didnt have the legs after playing on sunday. Spira has to stay, he is out best CB.

I think La rocca should have come on for ono. With mooy pushing up.

Also, how good is Yeboah. Kid's got a future, Brattan's also a top player. Being fair, the Roar probably deserved three points tonight, we had the possession but did zero with it.

I can see it being us and Brisbane in the end. Will be interesting when we have Juric, Hersi and Ono for 90 next time.

    Again. The Den are embarrassing.

i thin you will find the banter also creates atmosphere with everyone trying to out do each other.

Actually, the reason for the lack of roar supporters going to parra (bogan shortening of word used by NSW bogans) is the lack of time travel machines here. They need to be imported from the future and the conversion rate is such that most of us hicks cannot afford the luxury of time travel.
