Errrrrrr.

Someone say something positive, I'm getting worried,......

Was it that bad?

It was quite comical at times, especially the build up to the penalty. The spaniards were given a good intro to a fast paced pressing and counter attacking game, A-League style. Both Dimas and Alberto seemed quite slow when compared with the Phoenix' imports. Romeo as CAM is excellent, and Jamo was good.

I arrived at Wanderland tonight now knowing how the majority of our squad would adapt to playing at the venue & or perform in what was essentially a practice match.

Up until this stage it's been pretty easy for our visa players, as they (other then Andreu) have only met PL standard opponents in trial or FFA Cup games.

Phoenix played an up tempo game tonight & were excellent in the 1st half, only 10 days after being thrashed 5 - 1 by Melbourne Heartless. The two goals by Bonevacia were well taken & little or no blame can be attributed to Bouzanis in either instance.

However, our defensive awareness & pressure left a lot to be desired.

Tonight our squad received a reality check & hopefully our visa players now have a far greater appreciation of the standard that exists in the ALeague & that their stay at WSW will not be a walk in the park.

I'll be interested to see how our squad react to what was a rather lethargic performance tonight.

13 SEP 2015 - 10:32 PM  UPDATED YESTERDAY 10:32 PM

Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick was delighted with his team's performance, especially with players still to come back from injuries and goalkeeper Glen Moss jarring his neck in the warm-up. Italiano stepped in and performed well.
It was a very good performance," Merrick said.

"It was disappointing to lose another first-team player in the warm-up but Glen's injury is temporary and, hopefully, we will have him back for the Sydney game, but I was really impressed with the way the backline performed.

"Vince Lia slotted in between the two centre-backs when needed and they were rock solid the whole game.

"Lewis did well to save the penalty and the midfield was outstanding.

"Up front, it was good to see Kwabena (Appiah) having a good run alongside Roy (Krishna) and Michael McGlinchey was setting them up left, right and centre.

"Then there was Roly's two strikes which were outstanding, especially the first one.

"It is good that it is coming together well ..."

Phoenix went on the attack from the outset, knocking the ball around confidently and took the lead after eight minutes when Bonevacia produced a wonderful strike that flew into the top corner of the net from 22 metres.

Seven minutes later, Bonevacia made space for himself just inside the penalty area and drove a low shot into the corner giving Wanderers goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis no chance.

Only 11 minutes into the second half, Western Sydney was given a penalty for handball but Italiano dived low to his left to save Federico Piovaccari's spot kick.

Mitch Nichols pulled a goal back in the 70th minute when Phoenix gave the ball away but Powell restored the visitor's two-goal margin by pouncing on some sloppy defending and scoring.

Wellington plays NSW Premier League side Apia on Tuesday and Merrick intends to give young academy players their chance to impress.

"I will save those who played tonight for the game against Sydney FC on Friday," he said.

Probably not a bad time to have a loss as we were getting a little over confident. Players will now be aware how tough the league will be. We still have the players to do well this season.

Also Wellington for some reason are our bogey team. I personally love the way they play and the way Merrick coaches.

Years ago i used to work with a federico, who had a uruguay background.

He always used to introduce himself as fred. I am not sure if he (a)just went with the flow and figured ppl would call him fred anyways (b)if he just liked it; or © if he considered it the same name. Either way, he introduced himself in that way :)

Here's another angle. Keeper saved it with his shin

https://vine.co/v/eFwEgg1IK6Q

In before Mack mentions the encroachment by Nix defender

That is a really lazy penna though isn't it, just the whole manner the spot kick is taken, but then that attitude summed up our performance. But no need to get over concerned for what is a warm up game.

But at the same time the new season isn't so far away now and we need to start seeing the new team clicking together. Looking for a real step up in intensity over in Perth for the FAA Cup game, I think that Is quite an important game in our prep for the new season and might tell us a little more about how we are traveling.

They were really sharp in the first half especially. Worry where the goals will come from without Burns but definitely look like a tidy side.

Nix always well organised, they will be a right pain in the arse come the season proper and you can bet you life for the HAL game at Parra against them they will be *** hard to beat, they always are at Parra and it is usually a **** ugly game.

It's a trial game, players were swapping all over the joint, I didn't really read too much into it. I'd rather just be trying new things and experimenting. No one remembers who wins a trial game anyway.

Add McDonald to our list of youth attackers that are too small (Youlley, Sotirio, Fofannah) - these boys need to fill out a bit more before they become serious first team options.

One thing that wasn't mentioned in the last few pages was the rubbish standard of refereeing last night! Really glad that we will be able to look forward to a significant increase in the standard of refereeing from last year :nono:

It kicked off with Ben Williams being announced as a FT ref.

I took my brother to the game yesterday. He has been away from Australia for last 4 years. His observations :

Surprised by the number of supporters 1 month before the league starts

Even more surprised by the amount of cops and security.

Noticed an improvement in the teams (skill level)

Noticed the referees are as bad as he remembered them.

All these silver linings coming out of this match means so many positives

-Here is the Reality Check needed before the season and our cup tie

-count the penalty, take away the mistake and it is 2-2.

In my eyes, get the **** out of the way now for a big season.

Maybe he did that so people wouldn't call him Fed, or Fedo..

Which would then lead to be called the FedEx man...

Or Fedo which sound like pedo lol

Slightly refreshing...

tempered with the usual...Popa out bs on facebook (admittingly Facebook is not a great way to judge the level of common sense)

What I've learned is that being down 0:2 early in the game gets Popa off his chair. The rays that came out of his eyes generated so much heat it could be felt on the NT. The internal post mortem today would not have been pretty.

Yeah the steins were one thing, but I think Jimmy's kebabs straight off the bat after the first game at Pirtek was a bit optimistic   :ninja:

I don't mean to nitpick, but, the beauty of football is that you don't have to be a massive unit or a hulk to play. They might have disadvantages in size for a physical league like ours. But football is football, skill and technique is the overriding factor. Out of that lot I would rank them as Youlley, Fofannah then Sotirio.  I am not convinced Sotirio will crack it as a footballer. He is still young and he has time, but to me, he is just a runner. A headless chicken on a football field.

Based on the little playing time that we've seen of them, I don't think they have the skill or technique to override their lack of size. Hopefully I'm proven wrong. I agree with you about Sotirio. It's becoming more and more common to see bigger, stockier footballers over 6ft these days.

The performance yesterday was very poor.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.

All this stuff about it only being a pre-season trial game is bollocks.

For the first 30 minutes, we were completed outplayed.

We couldn't get the ball until we were two-nil down.

Then thankfully, before it got too embarressing, Wellington relaxed.

Wellington, in the scheme of things, are not that good.

But yesterday, they looked like ****in Barcelona.

We looked like a bunch of new players.

They looked like a team gettting ready for an A-League season.

And it's those little combinations that we are so lacking in.

Sigmund and Durante are a rock solid duo.

Riera is very underated and his link up play with Bonavecia is excellent.

For God's sake he even made Fenton, Krishna and Appiah look reasonably good.

Oh to have a Hersi/Polenz combination on the right again.

For much of the first half I thought we were doing a training drill with nobody on the right.

And as for the new lump of lard up front.

Clearly he's had way too much cream on his carbonara.

But even still, he's a long way from Juric.

And he's under estimated the standard of our league.

He's big and burly in a Frank Stapleton kind of way.

But after yesterday I'd have Frank... even though he's now 59.

The only glimmers of hope I could see:

- Romeo. But can he be fit for for every game?

- Nichols.

The whole security thing is ridiculous.
