The Matilda's, Australian Woman's national football team

Recommended Posts

This is kind of about W-League but really about the Matildas. I still can't get over how young they are. They are so mature, composed in front of camera, humble. I don't think I've ever seen one of them give a bad interview. It's incredible.

Young Matildas won't be going to the World Cup after losing to China in the game for 3rd place 0-3.

Van Egmond played a nominal 3 at back formation which seemed to turn into a back 4 on many occassions.

The girls were down 0-1 at half time due to a defensive lapse during a corner. Wanderers Whyman and Lowe returned to the starting XI. Whyman pulled off some great saves in the first half.

In the second half, Lowe was subbed off at half time. Our new signing Susan Phonsongkham came on in 72 min and played her part but will need to learn to stay on her feet against bigger and wilier opposition. The Chinese played on the counter at speed which our girls found difficult (sounds like the Socceroos?). Unfortunately, one goal was down to a GK mistake.

Whyman, excepting for the GK mistake, had a good game.

In this tournement, the final was won by Japan 1-0 over North Korea who both soundly beat the girls in either the group stage (Japan 1-5) and North Korea  (0-3) in the semi-final. China were playing at home, so were highly motivated but won the second balls about 70% of the time.

So another failure down to poor development structures.

That’s a big call, you can use that as a big brush to tar the whole of youth development in Australia.

How long has women’s development properly been happening in Australia? With slowy at the head of FFA, are you surprised that we have fallen behind the 8 ball?

When there is no clear pathway and the FFA keep employing failed Dutch technocrats in the coaching area rather than talented Australians who understand football downunder.

Why did Alex Tobin leave the post of Technical Director of FootballNSW? Because he was undermined AND disrespected by the Dutch mafia employed at the FFA by a string of CEOs who aee pen pushers with no love the game here.  Thus is down Frank Lowy who hired CEOs from Rugby Union, AFL, and Thugby League who only real concern was their hip pocket.

Matilda's looking good early on.Sam Kerr running backwards and heads in for a goal...! 1-0

Good half by the Matilda's had the majority of the ball, some great passing and positional play. Should be two or 3 goals up, but deserved leaders at HT.

Sam Kerr, what a freak! Great performance by the Matilda’s, haven’t selected the best players in the squad yet dominated. AS has done a fantastic job creating depth and bringing through the next generation of kids. It is great to see.

Got to laugh at the outrage of some after Sam Kerr got called the “female Messi”, that was all a good laugh! Nobody could see the compliment or that it has been used before to label other players (kiwi messi). Nope, straight to twitter

How Sam Kerr isn't in the running for the world's best player is beyond logic.

It is a joke but the reason? Women’s football isn’t that widely followed neither is the Australian girls. Kerr has performed in the US which doesn’t get much coverage and internationally which again hasn’t been broadcast that far & wide.

When it came it voting, it was apparent that it was a popularity contest when shortlist included a player who hadn’t played for half a year. When the who voted who vote list got released, sam Kerr got a fraction of the votes (5% or less I think). It is also a joke that FIFA spend more on the FIFA awards ceremony (best player, coach etc) than they do on the whole women’s game.

I've just finished reading an article about Sam Kerr in yesterdays "Good Weekend" magazine from the Sydney Morning Herald. Obviously penned by a Victorian or AFL follower. Well worth the read if anyone can access it.

The last paragraph in the article asks.........."Now there's an AFL Woman's league, could she be tempted away from soccer back to her first love?"

Her answer........"Not a chance". ******* lol.

Why would she leave a career that has made her world famous, earning decent coin, playing internationally and travelling the world, to play in some 6 week competition in a sport no one cares about in some backwater states of a small country? Was that a serious question?

The delusion amongst the AFL about how "great" their sport is continues.

The Matildas won this morning with a 2-0 win against China PR. Placed them in the playoff for 3rd against Portugal Women. Can only hope they don't get the same referee that denied them a penalty in their group stage match against Portugal.

Our only W-League player in the Matildas squad, Rachel Lowe, got her first cap for tje senior team this morning against China PR after being called in due to an injury.

Picked up 100 injuries in that tournament, going to be very tough on our girls leading into WC qualifiers/Asian Cup.

Rachel Lowe appointed as Capt of Young Matildas game against Thailand. Scored opening goal at Leichhardt Oval. Our other W-League player Susan P picked up a yellow card early in the first half.

Frustrating game, should have won. Not enough done to break down South Korea's very defensive mindset. Thought Heyman might have made a difference.

It always worries me when the coaching and playing staff start talking about winning tournaments. Just say "we're concentrating on getting out of our group" ffs!

Now we have to get a better result against Japan than South Korea do, or equal result and thump Vietnam.
