  • Dari-goal Vidosic Punishes Perth

    mack

Dario Vidosic has scored in his starting debut to give the Wanderers a dominant 1-0 victory against Perth Glory.

Threatened with postponement via a typical Wanderers home game storm, Western Sydney came out firing against Perth and totally dominated the play. As the referees discussed taking the players off should the lightning strike at Parramatta Stadium, Dario Vidosic ensured that any abandonment of the game at half-time would see the Wanderers take all three points.

Scott Jamieson launched a 44th minute corner in the penalty area, Perth failed to clear, Marc Warren's snap attempt at a clearance fell to Federico Piovaccari. The marquee striker smartly squared the ball to Vidosic, his first and second touches took him past Richard Garcia, and his third fired the ball across ex-Wanderer Ante Covic.

The second half continued much in the same vein, with the Wanderers eventually producing a decisive 60-40% possession tally, long with 359 passes at 83% accuracy, the new Spanish 'tiki taka' influence finally resulting in a match where all three points stayed with the Red & Black.

Felt a bit sorry for Pio tonight when he was subbed and the almighty cheer Santalab got as his replacement.

Pio is quite classy and his time will come.

He reminds me a bit of Dino in season 1. Things just aren't falling his way, yet he is doing a job and doing it well.

Pio just needs better service and I don't think our wingers or midfielders are doing that as well as they could at present.

Bridge ahead of Sotirio is a no brainer for mine atm, now that he is fit again. He's just as quick in the legs, but much quicker between the ears.

I think having Bridge on the field could help Pio immensely.

Also, I think Dario needs to stay a bit wider on the right and not drift into centre field so often. There was so much space there all night, yet it wasn't being exploited like Hersi used to or Castalen can.

I still think Santa can be a beast given 20 minute spells towards the end of games if Popa chooses to persist with Pio.

Also.........and I'm going to say it out loud...............Topor Stanley is a major concern for mine. I think his time has come. Some of his passing decisions are appalling and his execution even worse. He puts other players under more pressure than they should be far too often. This is where Andreu is a standout.

Anyway, I'll take the win, although the game should have been put away far earlier.

A win is a win, and hopefully, we can start to build some momentum from here, just like season one.

Newcastle won't be easy next week. They are tough cookies this season. I like their new coach.

    Woohoo.

On a sad night I have had to retire my new jersey for the rest of the season.

    Oh oh...this sounds ominous.

It seems that me wearing a jersey is bad. I decided to keep her tucked away tonight, I had a feeling.

I was right. We got the win. It looks like bucket hat and WSF scarf only from now on.

I'm so glad I persisted. When getting out of the car I looked at team members cap, which has never been worn, then bucket hat then team cap again.
I really had a big think about it and felt I was cheating or having an affair if I went with team cap. I'm so glad I was loyal and it all worked out well in the end...

Will take both to Newie but bucket hat will be my first love.

    :woah:  :woah:  :woah:

Another home game, another Stormy night in Western Sydney.

Proving once again that even God himself can't help but electrify the atmosphere for a Wanderers home game.

But not even the almighty could dampen the crowds spirits tonight, or stop the tide from turning in our favour.

Tonight was only a trickle. After tonight the floodgates will open!!!

As far as the team performance is concerned: all the new signings were bad. Nichols was the worst of them all. Shocking recruiting. Style of play s8cks too. Am not happy about the high rate of possession, the passing, and the control in midfield at all

Great win, here are my thoughts: Piovaccari just looks majorly unfit. In patches he did some quite good things tonight, and we know he has the strength to hold up well. He just seems undercooked and the game is being played around him. Have to question how he can be so unfit, but the fact that it is clearly such a major factor means I still have a little bit of hope. His movement in the box was poor though, and he didn't offer a threat despite 28 crosses... not to mention zero shots on target and 59% pass accuracy..

I agreed with everything else you've said disagree with this 110%.

    - You've got to understand that he hasn't had a full preseason & will take a few games to get to full match fitness. Popa wanted the team to hit its peak by round 5 (source: interview). Also keep in mind he is not the sort of person that runs & runs & runs (bridge, hersi, dino), he is a well built guy who has pace in short bursts so can't compare him to just anyone.

    - You can't expect him to work hard in defence then transport himself 20m up the field when we win the ball. I heard Popa get on Pio a few times telling him to not drop back as deep a few times. A reason why he wasn't on the end of crosses as much as we'd like.

    - I thought he was fantastic out there, okay no goal but I really liked his runs (on & off the ball), his work pressing with Nichols, hold up play, interplay with players running past him in the final third. I really feel a goal will turn him into a machine but he just needs his first.

    - pass accuracy is a great stat but not so relevant for an out & out striker. I think stats like runs completed, chance creation are better stats. Shots is obviously key for a striker but I'm not sure whether we are not giving him the service to shoot or is it that he isnt positioning himself correctly to get the service? When Bridge came on, he wa was a step up on Sotirio from a delivery perspective & if you get Castelen on the field you'll get plenty more opportunities for Pio.

    • F8rk it was hot on the way to the Bavarian.
    • A friend of mine joined us at the Bavarian to get ready for his first A-League match. He forced several glasses of Friesengeist and a glass of some other cleaning agent down my throat. By the time I arrived at the ground I was rather merry.
    • Was it my imagination or did the NT turn up the volume once it started to rain?
    • The WST was quite lively at times in Bay 53.
    • How many saves was Redders forced to make? Same as last week?
    • The new chant is spectacular.
    • First time since Al Hilal a win at Pirtek with a clean sheet. It has been a long and at times painful year, but it was worth the wait.
    • It was quite cute how NTS lined up all the newbie's in front of the RBB for post-match celebrations. They got the hand of it very quickly.
    • I shook Dario Vidosic's hand.
    • Met the Friesengeist doner outside of the ground. He was ecstatic and wants to join the RBB.
    • Thank God Braad was around to drive my car home.
    • As far as the team performance is concerned: all the new signings were bad. Nichols was the worst of them all. Shocking recruiting. Style of play s8cks too. Am not happy about the high rate of possession, the passing, and the control in midfield at all.
    • The green hill behind the NT was secured by riot police. They didn't have much to do as supplies of maritime distress devices appear to be somewhat low after the derby.
    • Newcastle, here we come.

If you can get Friesengeist Man back to the Bav let me know...would love to revisit that over 50% proof mouth wash goodness

Don't think Popa and the medical staff would risk that.

Maybe not. Would put the Guardian Funerals guys out of business, and those bottles of Powerade might have a very Cabernet Sauvignon taste to them after he got a hold of them

If ever there was a sign of the relief felt when we finally turned weeks of dominant football into a goal, it was NTS picking up the ball and punting it over the western grandstand after Dario scored.

RBB was strong, particularly when the rain picked up. Good to see the guys in 53 getting more involved. Also good to see over 14k at the ground when the weather was crap, we were in last and the away section could all share a cab back to the airport.

Our Lives We Give / la la la la la la la la lo lo lo lo lo lo...after such a short time our new chant smashed it tonight....cannot stop singing and will be up there with Call to Arms. Pio was as hungry as Jamieson. The club marshall in front of 56 seriously needs a dozen grandkids he can play control god with. My patience with Uncle Fester is running out. What is it with games v Perth and hail ? Least the pepper spray was missing. Popa out eh ?? Newcastle will be a beast of game and trip.

What's been the issue with the Club Marshall??
He just walks around analyzing everything waiting for any opportunity to tell people what to do. Then pounces. He is just doing the job of security. It's just like having a cop at the front or security, except security wouldn't analyze to the extent he does
I had a really good chat to him at the w-league game & picked his brain for quite a while. There are also a few things that are very interesting about his role that you'll only find out if you actually have a chat with him, which he is quite happy to oblige.

In response to your comment, he is the first line of response to any problems. If security or police feel that he isn't able to control certain behaviours or make an impact on the crowd then they will get involved, which we don't want. It's not so much about telling people what to do, it's more analysing potential problems & nipping them in the bud. Also, he isn't doing the job of security, he is paid for by the club to help the fans when interacting with the security or the police. It's not his job to remove trouble makers, he is trying to stop problems from escalating to security or police involvement. His job is very similar to that of the fan liaison officers in Clifford's Stots crowd management models but has slight adaptations. I completely understand what he is doing & why he is doing it.

Good to see the guys in 53 getting more involved.

The WST was quite lively at times in Bay 53.

My view from the lower west was blocked so I didn't see these guys in action. So last home game they were involved for just one chant, what was it today? 75% involved? Was it just certain chants?
