  • Golec Guns Down Guangzhou

    The Western Sydney Wanderers will take a 1-0 aggregate lead into the second leg of their Asian Champions League quarter final after a remarkable match against ACL Champions Guangzhou Evergrande were beaten by a goal to Antony Golec, followed by finishing the match with just 9 men on the park.

     

    Golec claimed the winner on the hour mark, cutting inside from the left flank before delivering a low cross that beat everyone including the Chinese goalkeeper, who was frozen by the run of Tomi Juric, before nestling into the bottom right hand corner.

    Evergrande saw two red cards and their World Cup winning manager Marcello Lippi may face further sanctions as chaos reigned following the dismissals of Zeng Linpeng in the 88th minute and Gao Lin in the 90th.

     

    Shannon Cole has the best chance of the first half, after Haliti stormed down the wing he put a wonderful cross that beat the leaping Evergrande defence, only to see Cole glance the header wide when he should have put his side in front. Liao Lisheng smacked a ball moments before the break that Covic turned away.

     

    The second half was all Wanderers from the opening stages, Tomi Juric menacing the diminutive Chinese defenders and being the cause of the goal from Golec despite not getting a touch. Vitor Saba made his Parramatta Stadium debut and made an immediate impact, gliding around his opponents and drawing numerous fouls, while also showing an appetite for the hard defensive that he will require playing in the A-League for Western Sydney.

     

    Chaos reigned in the last moments of the game, as Linpeng smashed La Rocca with an elbow and was shown a straight red, followed minutes later by compatriot Lin who kicked Vitor Saba in the face and quickly joined Linpeng for an early shower. At that point Lippi stormed onto the pitch and confronted the referee, who eventually regained control, denied Juric a penalty in the final seconds then ended the match.

     

    The result means any draw or win for the Wanderers will see them through to the Semi-Final, while even a 2-1 loss would be enough to progress on away goals.

     

    The Wanderers next match is Leg 2 of the Asian Champions League quarter finals against Guangzhou Evergrande, in China, played on Wednesday the 27th of August.

    Yep they had every opportunity to show us their anger outside the ground but I didn't even see one of them, they were ushered away by the cops.

     

    It was funny seeing obviously paid people handing out Chinese flags to their fans, I wasn't aware it was china v Australia.

    There was a certain 'rent-a-crowd' feel about their so-called away fans...reminds me of the time I saw the torch in Canberra for the Beijing Olympics. The pro-China message was far more obvious than the 'let's go Guangzhou'. I could be way off beam but my gut feeling is someone in the local Chinese expat students community with links to their government made certain that there was a well-rehearsed 'spontaneous' showing of support for GE.

     

    Course I could be channeling my inner Clive  :ninja:  :ninja:

    i know sweet FA about the atmosphere inside chinese stadiums. does anyone know if the home fans in china will make it much harder?.... have they got an intimidating home record?

     

    anyone who says that parra is not an intimidating place to play for opposing players is kidding themselves..... just wondering if the wanderers can expect a similar reception, and if anyone thinks it will have any effect on the outcome.

    This is where Popa shows just how deserved his reputation is. Keeping the squad focused on a positive performance and forgetting that there was even a match last week or that a crowd even exists in China, that's where he earns his kudos.

    I'd say there maybe 100 actual 'away supporters', the rest were just Chinese locals who picked up freebie packs paid for by Guangzhou or the Chinese embassy?. I was still impressed they managed to still fill the entire south end like that.

    During commentary Cockerill said that GE's owners had paid for 1,000 fans to come from China for the game and they took 20,000 to an away game in Korea last year.

    I saw a few getting a bit pissy (whilst being on a different platform) at some young fellas singing and dancing at the train station

    Speaking of that, I read a comment from an Army guy who said he stepped in to stop some of our fans hassling a woman on Parra station, apparently she was Philipino not Chinese.

     

    I wouldn't mind hearing if anyone was a witness to it.

    The 1000 fans that came from china are GUANGZHOU members apparently, I have a Chinese friend at work who confirmed it for me,

     

    All their flights and accommodation paid for by GUANGZHOU owner!

    Finally managed to watch the match replay. When Bridge had that chance about 15 mins in but fell down he appealed to the referee for a penalty. Didn't see much in it at the time but if you watch the replay the defender on the ground reaches out and ankle taps him. Should have been a penalty. Don't know why Lippi was so upset with the ref...

      Obviously I'm sure he assumed he wouldn't get caught, but how much would he be getting to risk another year or two on a likely 6 figure wage even if he had to move to a new club.

      ^ Yep, exactly that, took me a while to find a picture of it. NPL TV uses the camera position adjacent to the commentary box as the only location. For the Women's season there is a temporary scaffold placed behind the scoreboard, which I believe is done in order to give a better view of the crowd and to avoid the setting sun in afternoon games (commonly seen in afternoon NPL games).
