  • Western Sydney Wanderers Are Champions Of Asia

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have been crowned the Champions of Asia after a stoic 0-0 draw in Saudi Arabia, the Wanderers winning the two legged tie 1-0 on aggregate following Tomi Juric's goal in Sydney in the first leg.

The 64th minute strike in the first leg at Parramatta Stadium proved to be the only goal of the tie, with the "Blue Wave" crashing forlornly against a Red & Black fortification manned by a team who refused to concede a goal to their better resourced opponents.

In the 18th minute Al Hilal had the first chance of the game, swinging a free kick from the left flank that the Wanderers weren't able to get anything on, thankfully for them neither did one of their opponents, a right boot stuck out but agonisingly distant from making contact.

A minute before half-time the first penalty shout of the night was waved away by Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura. Inside the area a ball rolled into the path of the flying Nawaf Shaker, Antony Golec clipped the right foot of the attacker but the theatrical leap perhaps weighed the incidence in the favour of the Australians.

After the break it was another stonewall penalty turned down, Salman Alfaraj latching onto a through ball deep in the right corner of the penalty area and was clearly brought down by Ante Covic but wasn't punished for the indiscretion. Another potential penalty came when the ball was kicked at short range into arms of Brendon Santalab, Nishimura judging that it was ball to hand rather than hand to ball.

The Saudi's pushed on and on, pressing for a goal that would take the game into extra time, and it looked for all money like they had one in the 84th minute. A cutback found talismanic striker Yasser Al-Qahtani, his shot from near the penalty spot had no right to be saved but the big hand of Covic found a way. The ball bounced once before spinning out for a corner just inches away from the goalpost. The save was the biggest moment for an Australian keeper since Mark Schwarzer in the famous shootout against Uruguay.

The Wanderers had precious little attack of their own, the best chance coming from a mazy Vitor Saba dribble that released Labinot Haliti, the shot being blocked desperately. Western Sydney didn't need a goal however, an eventual 6 minutes of injury time passed before the final whistle blew and the Wanderers were officially crowned Champions of Asia.

The immediate post-game scene was marked by disgraceful conduct from the Al Hilal players, with Matthew Spiranovic being spat on and headbutted, a melee threatened to breakout but cooler heads prevailed.

The extraordinary end to the Wanderers maiden assault on the continental stage ended in a victory that few if any would have predicted in the first year or even second year of the club's existence. The championship is an eternal credit to the tactical nous of Tony Popovic, and the resilience of every man to have pulled on the famous Red & Black hoops of Western Sydney.

The Club World Cup now looms in December, the Wanderers joining San Lorenzo (CONMEBOL), Real Madrid (UEFA), ES Setif (CAF), Cruz Azul (CONCACAF), Auckland City (OFC) & hosts Moghreb Tetouan in Morocco from the 10th of December. The Wanderers will face Cruz Azul of Mexico for the right to face European giants Real Madrid in the semi-final. Such a class would be the biggest competitive fixture for an Australian side since South Melbourne took on Manchester United in the 2000 edition of the competition.

Tony Popovic spoke after the match about the win, "We were called a small club yesterday. Today we are the biggest in Asia."

The next match for the Champions of Asia is against the Wellington Phoenix, on Friday the 7th of November.

Well I'm off to bed. What a day. I'll sleep better than last night that's for sure. See you at the airport everyone!  Just thinking all those Al-Hilal players will have gone to sleep and dreamt of huge red and black monsters that just wouldn't let them pass!

Does anyone know if past players of our ACL campaign will eventually get a Medal?

    Shinji, Polenz, Hersi, etc..?

I thought medals are only awarded to players that participated in the final.

I'm getting this cause I'm a Man United fan, and I know when Roy Keane and Paul Scholes missed out on the 1999 UCL final, they didn't get a medal.

I would love to know if Shinji was watching it somewhere and his reaction. He's injured, yeah? Surely there would be a post or a story. Awww.. Shinji.

Where do I start? It’s still just sinking in. I feel so much pride, so much joy, so much relief.

Western Sydney Wanderers FC, my club, a team that represents where I am from, is now the club Champions of Asia! Yep, that’s right. We have won the 2014 AFC Asian Champions League just 2 years since we played our first ever competitive match. What a story! What a ride it’s been!

Words can’t describe this feeling. Three years ago my club didn’t even exist. It feels like so long ago and it’s hard to remember what life was like before this club entered my life, grabbed my heart and swallowed my soul.

I was there in the early days at the fan forums when this club was created by the people of Western Sydney. We helped choose the club name, the colours, the culture, the stadium, and even the coach!

Everyone at these forums knew of the enormous potential of the club. We dreamt of a time in the future when the club would be the biggest in Australia and then on the world stage. I never knew this would all happen so quickly!

Since this club was born I have watched it grow and grow and grow. Like a baby finding its way, the building blocks have gradually come into place. I was there when the club announced its name and logo, I was there at the Woolpack when the fans choose the RBB as the name of the active group, I was there at the first ever game at Cook Park, I was a member from day dot, and I witnessed our first ever A-league game. These memories will live with me forever!

Our first season, our crowds grew, our profile grew. We quickly become the proud representatives of Western Sydney, filling a void that ESFC had never met. We won our first game, then our first derby. Finally we won the Premiers Plate! Silverware in our first season! Second season and we again had a good year and started our historic ACL run! There are just too many things to mention in our short history. I am seriously lost for words.

Western Sydney Wanderers FC. We are the pride of Western Sydney, the pride of Australia, the pride of Asia. Next we take on the world.

We hold aloft the AFC Champions League Trophy. Nobody can take that away from us. To all the haters of the Wanderers, just remember that we were the first Australian club to win this trophy. You will be reminded of this forever.

Thank you to the players, the fans, the Wanderers Family for creating such an amazing club to be proud of, a club that represents the culture and value of Western Sydney, and is representing us on the world stage. We have all done our bit, made a contribution to this great cause. Keep taking the club higher. Don’t stop.

Its all still sinking in. Is this a dream? I simply can’t express enough what this win means. Let me just finish with these fine words...

    Fear none, conquer all

also this so much, i remember the start and its just massive and amazing how far we have come, i still remember you shouting me my first coke(not cocaine), we were 2 crazy kids

Congratulations guys .. you did a great match .. you defended well and deserved the trophy ..

i'm still sad and disappointed ..

it appears the ACL is impossible for us to win ..

its just like a curse :sorry:

    Thanks Faisal!

    Your team is impressive ..

its just as simple as that ..

some people think that if you attack or if you got that ball the most then you deserve to win ..

it hasn't been ever this way ..

you played with a world class tactic .. your players got the discipline to stay back and defend .. this what brings glory !!

now, i consider myself a WSW fan ..  :xbop:  :wanderturtle:

i will watch every coming game that's for sure .. i may even attend a game or two when ever i have the chance ..

the new ACL will start in 2-3 months ..

we will play our best to reach the final ..

and who knows .. we may face each other again :D

i really respect how gracious you are in defeat, its a trait that is sadly lacking among most people but a very good trait

Yes they did get one... Keane has stated many times it sits there and had never really looked at it

Do our headquarters at the athletics field even have space for a trophy cabinet?

Mr Primo and Mr Pirtek... It's time to ride the wave, buy out the Roxy, Open our own Supporters club. You can't lose, this club will only get Bigger and better and when you do, you had better make a HUGE trophy cabinet...  :grouphug:  :woah:  :woah:

They make a new one each year (like the Melbourne Cup, AFL Trophy, etc.), the 2014 is on one side, the other side just has the ACL logo :) But from my understanding, we'll get to keep this one anyway :)

Gotta say, woke up this morning and the first thing I thought of was yesterday.

Still can't believe but it has sunk in a little better.

With the benefit of having come down a bit I can safely say that was one of the best days of my life.

Cannot wait to sing my lungs out at the airport tonight.

    After an epic day yesterday.

I still cannot believe this is real.

    My feelings are still numb.

It still hasn't hit me yet that we are champions of Asia...

But it should hit me tonight when I see the boys come through the arrival terminal at sydney airport

I'm still buzzing... barely slept, went out to celebrate immediately after...

I knew, when I went to our first ever preseason game a couple of years back, with only a handful of supporters, kids running around, family atmosphere... I knew something like this was possible.

So soon?....... This is truly what dreams are made of.

We are officially one of the premier clubs of this planet, and a good news story for the ages.

Well, ****. We won and it still hasn't sunk in properly.

All the hard work the team and we, the fans, have put in is summed up quite nicely under the title "Champions League Winners 2014".

I have never felt such anxiety like I did in those last 10 minutes, from Covic's "what the **** is he on to save that" save to the extra minute of nothing time added on.

At the full time whistle, hands with clenched fists went in the air, eyes closed, knees hit the ground and the tears rolled out.

If there's any better feeling in life, it better be better than this.
