nmh94 Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Glad the giant Swiss bus got punished. The Round of 16 can be one of the more frustrating stages of the WC at times, often the "middle" sides look to sit deep when against the "top" sides, in the hope of fluking a counter attack goal and holding on, or getting through to a shootout. The only thing is, it almost never works. The underdog that went the closest and was by far the unluckiest in this Rd of 16 was the side that took it to their opponents, Chile against Brazil. Having said that the Argies need to get it together quickly in the final third if they want to win this tournament, Messi aside of course, who was dangerous again. The other game, bloody hell, how many chances do Belgium want? They dominated the midfield in the first half, even more so in the second, had 25 plus shots at goal, and couldn't put the thing in! The attacking midfielders (De Bruyne, Hazard, Fellani and Mirallas) all played well, but they must contribute more in terms of goal scoring. To be honest I think it is the expectation that is getting to them. It almost bit them badly in the 92nd minute. They then got the goals their dominance deserved in the first period of extra time, Lukaku was brilliant (I do think using his a sub would still be better tactics against the Argies, though he should be brought on about 65-70, not after 90. Going by the last lot of games, the odds are the score will be still 0-0 at that point, and the defences will have started to tire). What happened in the second period of extra time again to me proved they aren't handling the pressure, it was a massive choke. Bradley and the US midfield, who were a complete non-event for the first 105 minutes, started to take over and the US could easily have sent it to penalties. Both sides need to improve in the final third, but I think Messi will be the difference. On both sides he is the only attacker standing up in big situations on both sides. JackDoff and Tranquilo 2

teddies Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 I will hate it when the USA becomes a soccer powerhouse, and it will happen in the next 20 years or so. Maybe sooner! **** me flying it'll **** me big time ... Definitely! I've always said that they have this arrogance that they're better than anyone they face - which isn't at all a bad thing! That attitude + infrastructure (money, college system) to promote and develop football and its players x the increase of interest by fans and soon to be retired players in the MLS = an ever improving US SOKKER. I even think that they will be even more competitive in the next 2 world cups.

ManfredSchaefer Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Pardon me. My American history isn't fantastic. And by "isn't fantastic" I mean non existent. Tsk tsk...education standards of today. Next thing you'll be telling me you don't know who shot William McKinley, which US President worked in the West Australian goldfields, and which Yank prez was saved by an Australian coast watcher... By the way, anyone seen the post-game interview with Tim Howard. For all the yammering about how good his game was why the **** do the usual Septic reporters come out trying to do a psychoanalysis of a sportsman after the match? It's almost as irritating as some twat gibbering about American history! neilando and Burztur 2
Prydzopolis Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 I don't like that Lichsteiner. Always been a grubby player. Didn't think he was that bad, mascherano was the worst on field player, fouling like a rock star but then gives the ref a spray for giving the foul and then goes on carrying like baby arguing with opposition players!! Feel sorry for Lichsteiner because he gave away the ball which led to the goal on the half way line, unnecessarily too! Suisse did well to stop messi from playing football but gee with so much creative talent on the field I don't know how they didn't break them down till the 118th minute. I'm glad that they'll progress but not sure how far they'll go!

Nnnnnathan12 Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 I like this rule a lot http://www.foxsports.com.au/football/fifa-mull-fourth-substitute-in-extra-time/story-e6frf423-1226975854632?sv=4c489bb078e5e3a04a18a3f40e1c4650&nk=e26cf9ab0a2e6d00bc47de370fa059c4 FIFA’s coaching advisers will propose that teams can use a fourth substitute in extra time before the 2018 World Cup kicks off. “I think that’s an idea that we will put†to football’s rules-making panel, Gerard Houllier, a member of the FIFA technical study group, said at a briefing on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST). Up to three replacements are currently allowed, even when knockout matches go to extra time after scores are level in regulation time. Houllier said changing the rules could see fewer players struggle with muscle cramps in high-intensity matches. “It’s a good idea. Only in extra time. Maybe if someone is injured, why not?†the former France coach said. So far, substitutes have scored 29 goals after coming off the bench in Brazil, already a World Cup record with eight matches left to play. The previous mark was 23 at the 2006 tournament in Germany, FIFA said.
Carns Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Okay last week there was a guy who sounded like Vitor Sabral commentating on Belgium v Soviet Union in 86, now it's the same guy on England v Germany 1970, it has to be him... what are they, audition tapes? Yeah I watched the Portugal v North Korea game from 66 on the weekend and I'm pretty sure Vitor did that as well. The upside was impeccable pronunciation of the Portugese names. The downside was him saying things like "can they come back?" in a game that he commented on nearly half a century after the result was decided. Okay so I'm not going mad then. He's quite impressive given that he must have only been doing it watching the vision and not being from the era he wouldn't be that familiar with all the players etc. I wonder if he watched them through first before having a crack. He must have really, to familiarise himself with the players etc, but as you say, takes away from the spontaneity a bit. THe real question though is why sbs don't have the original commentary or why they preferred to have him dub his own over it.... just weird. I'd much prefer Vitor to be commentating than Basheer (no need to put this in the unpopular opinions thread I suspect). It's possible that the original commentary was a separate file to the video. FIFA would beam the pictures around the world, and local commentators would add their touch. World Cups weren't broadcast live in Australia until 1974, so we may not have had a live commentary feed to use (if so it would have been British anyway). The other alternative is that the quality was so poor (being more than 50 years old) and SBS decided it was unusable and utilised Vitor instead. I do agree it is a little weird, but I can imagine (based on the image quality) that the original sound quality would have been poor (and in mono - not that that really matters for commentary). Vitor is commentating Italy vs. West Germany 1990 now.

Tranquilo Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 also read somewhere that Maradona was very upset that after Costa Rica's epic win against Italy, instead of the random 2 players that get selected for random drug testing that 7 of their squad was chosen. The Costa Rican coach was also quite upset and even asked Fifa if they wanted to drug test him also. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/dirty-tackle/maradona-thinks-fifa-is-targeting-world-cup-darlings-costa-rica-with-drug-tests-144537359.html He added: “This is only happening because some people are annoyed Costa Rica - and not the big teams - are going through, and so the sponsors won’t pay what they’d promised.
