  • Reds Stunned By Wanderers Fightback!

    mack

A brace from substitute Brendon Santalab has given the Western Sydney Wanderers an audacious come from behind win over Adelaide United.

In a feisty and spirited Round 2 opener, the Wanderers had the better of the first half, but came into the break behind on the scoreboard. In the 42nd minute Mitch Nichols lost the ball in an attacking position, and Adelaide broke quickly down the right flank. With Clisby out of position, Aspro slide across but couldn't stop Ryan Kitto from beating him on the outside. The cut-back found ex-Roar striker Henrique, and he scored on his home debut.

The second half introductions of Nico Martinez & supersub Brendon Santalab utterly turned the game around. With Nichols having a less than stellar game, and Bulut having more offsides than shots on goal, the subs combined with the rest of the Wanderers attack to hold the ball & string together passes in the final third and they had their reward in the 67th minute. Nico's refusal to panic in a right back position saw him find Jumpei, and from there Clisby tore down the left flank before finding an unmarked Nichols. Santalab pounced at the near post to turn the ball behind Eugene Galekovic for the equaliser.

Santalab inspired the Wanderers to take all three points, his crunching tackle on James Holland rattled the home side and from then on the visitors had the advantage. Santalab then silenced the Adelaide crowd with his 91st minute winner. Nichols tracked back & stole the ball from Isaias, found Jumpei who played a neat through ball back to Nichols who threaded a pass through the legs of Tarek Elrich & bisected two Adelaide defenders to Santalab, who stroked home with his sweet left foot.

The Wanderers took liberties that other referees may have punished more harshly than the two yellow cards incurred, but the side showed grit & determination, two qualities that were sorely lacking against Melbourne City & in the derby last week. The continued introduction of Nico into the starting lineup should help stabilise the squad & their ball retention, and give Bulut, if he starts again, better service than he received in his stint tonight. All in all, it was a performance punctuated with flying tackles & blistering counter-attacks and left Adelaide stunned.

Been a few days, but here are my thoughts:

    • Playing out from the back, if the pressure is too great just pump it up field. Too many close calls for me.
    • Clisby's 'tackle' was technically a red, but can understand the yellow given. Still, very a lucky boy.
    • Dimas was great, his combination with Jumpei, Mitch and later on Nico was something beautiful.
    • Nico has some great talent, will be dangerous once he is completely fit.
    • Bulut had a lot of running to do, did a lot of work off the ball. Still not convinced yet though.
    • Santalab. Silly, silly boy. Should have been sent off. That's the type of tackle they show to referees in pre-season meetings and call it "an obvious send off challenge."
What makes Clisby's tackle a technical red card?

In terms of Santa's tackle, what makes it obvious red? Was it the way he went in with excessive force or the dangerous nature of the tackle (took out his standing leg)? Do you think the referees are going to let a bit more go (this set a precedence) or do you think it was a mistake? I've been told that the Cornflakes tackle in the derby was bad & could have easily been red which makes me think they are going to let a bit go this year.

    Matter of opinion then.

The law does state "in the opinion of the referee..." ;)

With Clisby you have to look at the type of challenge that would be required to win the ball in that scenario. He clearly made no attempt to win the ball, he came in from mostly behind and initial contact was made by the knee. Was the force more than what is reasonable required in that situation? Probably, yes. But, that's my opinion.

    :)

Clisby went in hard but still had a foot out to play the ball. The ball just got played quickly after he'd already committed. I don't want to see anyone getting injured but that was a good solid hit, nothing wrong with the way he used his body.

Santas tackle on the other hand was dangerous, undisciplined and lazy.

Refs also tend not to send off players in the first ten minutes of a game, if it was done second half then maybe but it was also not a diving in tackle with studs up and Santa's facial expression said it all knowing he got lucky with only a yellow card. Let's hope Santa learns from that as he won't be so lucky next time.

Santa is treading a very thin line.

I love his passion and enthusiasm, but geez, he's sailing close to the wind. He won't be so lucky next time, me thinks.

Gazmon, the reason why I bring it up is because it's important that we get consistency with decisions. If they want to make challenges like Clisby's a red, then I'd like to see consistency across the board not just "oh look at the Wanderers, they are grubs, give them a red"

Agree on Santa but let's not go too over the top, we know he likes to throw his body around & usually picks up a yellow for the team. In this situation he has misjudged his challenge & it went wrong, let's move on.

We have two small and skilful players in Jumpei and Martinez who might be candidates for getting

kicked into the stands by some of the defenders in other teams.

Could easily have been three send-offs in three games. Need mongrel in the team but not this type of

    ill discipline.

The 1:1 - best wsw counter attack ever? Martinez, Jumpei, Dimas, Clisby, Nichols, Santa - goal. Fast, skillful, precise, and ultimately successful. Just beautiful.

Funny thing is we are supposed to have morphed into a possession based team , away from a

    counter-attacking style.

As I recall , although the detailed memory is dimming somewhat , there were some pretty sensational

counter attacks in S1 , mainly involving Hersi.

Being possession based doesn't exclude counter attacks though. In fact pressing your opposition in midfield (usually part of a possession game) and hitting them quickly (if possible) is a common trait of a good possession based side.

Having said that, our possession game isn't great yet, I ultimately agree there.

no. consistency is crap. makes for boring football and predictable officiating. its not exciting if you know whats gonna happen next.

Just watching the highlights show on Foxtel

Santalab foul is shocking, about as clear a sending off as you get

Who cares, stuff Adelaide and people complaining on Facebook like it is the first time a referee has ever made a mistake

The goal for 1-1 gets more sexual each time I watch it

The highlights package editing was a bit misleading shows Clisby foul the cirio going off. Misses that he played on for a while and didn't go off until he left his foot in on Dimas

Oh and in other highlight observations Nescvaki is last

I don't know if it has been already mentioned but how much class was Amor in the post match interview? He could have directly blamed the referee for the loss or indirectly (which I know popa loves to do) but instead refused to blame them. Class, pure class Amor :good:

Yet it's only now that they start questioning his judgement of how he goes into tackles. Two seasons too late

A work colleague's son was coached by one of Santa's junior coaches a couple of years back. He said early on Santa broke a kids leg sliding in late. The coach benched Santa for the time it took the broken leg to heal, taught him a lesson then.

Amor was helped by the fact that Zappa continues to phrase questions to overseas players/coaches in ways that they can't really understand the question. He's a shocker at that
