  • Wanderers Into ACL Semi-Final On Away Goals!

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers will face FC Seoul in the Asian Champions League Semi-Final after they progressed in the Quarter Final tie against Guangzhou Evergrande on the away goals rule.

Following the 1-0 win in Parramatta, and despite the 2-1 loss on the night, an away goal to Tomi Juric gave Western Sydney victory in a nerve racking tie in China.

Goalkeeper Ante Covic was the hero in the first half with his penalty save. Covic spared the blushes of Iacopo La Rocca who felled Elkeson in the penalty box with an utterly dreadful tackle reminiscent of the one by Lucas Neill against Italy in the World Cup in Germany. Gilardino stepped up to the spot only to be denied by Covic, his penalty was a poor one, almost straight down the middle but with no power or height he effectively hit the strike straight at the Wanderers number 1.

The Wanderers were placed under immense pressure in the second half, but found their vital goal through a penalty of their own. The Evergrande defence were lulled into a false sense of security by Juric being in an offside position, it let Bridge stroll unopposed into the box and he was taken out in a woeful challenge by opposition keeper Zeng Cheng, who received the most red card worthy yellow card I've seen in years.

Juric blasted his penalty to the right side netting to give his side a 1-0 lead on the night and a 2-0 lead on aggregate. Unfortunately for the Wanderers, it looked like the referee gave Juric his own yellow card for the post-goal celebration, and if so, Juric will miss the first leg against Seoul.

The drama was far from over though as Guangzhou immediately pegged the Wanderers back when Diamanti, who was best player on the park for the ACL winners of last year, took advantage of a flick-on that left him wide open for a neat finish under the legs of Covic.

Hearts in mouth time came halfway through the four minutes of stoppage as Guangzhou threatened a miracle escape by scoring their second on the night through Elkeson who had a tap-in at the back post after a goal-line scramble.

The 120 seconds remaining seemed like an eternity, but stoic possession by the Wanderers kept the ball in their attacking half and several fouls later full time was blown, sending the Wanderers into the semi-final in their first appearance in the Asian Champions League via the majestic away goals rule.

The win was the best loss in the history of the club, their progression into the semi-final has only been matched by Australian clubs once, with Adelaide United, who also managed to progress through to the final in the 2008 edition of the competition.

The current ACL schedule, if followed, will see the Wanderers play FC Seoul in Korea in the first leg on the 17th of September, with the return leg on the 1st of October. There are rumours that the club will be playing a friendly tournament in the middle east but there has been no official confirmation as yet.

Now I agree appiahs touches aren't the best at times but the GE left back kept pushing forward hard and from what I could see we were sitting right back parking the bus absorbing an onslaught on that side. His positioning didn't look great but appears he was asked to push forward when he could and with our last defence sitting so far back at times there will always be a gap between the two looking like positioning is incorrect. I believe the plan was to let them push up put in crosses and counter. After we got the first goal seemed more obvious as we sat even further back. Congrats to popa and the players for there tactical play, may not look pretty but it's a plan, and it worked and the result is we win on aggregate.

The boys put in a massive effort against all odds. They wore there hearts on their sleeves. What more could you ask from them. Well done!

Apologies if it has been said, but the completed passes is concerning. We need to hold the ball better on the road. Our defence was brilliant in helping make up for it, but it may cost us in Seoul if we don't improve in this area.

There has been a bit of criticism of Shannon Cole, but I think he did well, in what was a monumental task at right back.

We desperately needed someone winning possession at the back and actually ensuring that we played it out and retained possession further up the field. He did lose possession on a couple of occasions, but more often he was successful.

Congratulations to Popa for using Cole in that position in this game. It was a scary ride, but we can all be proud of what our team of pre-season journeymen have achieved against the rich boys of Asia!

I thought Cole had a great game considering how often he was let down by Kubi who was leaving Cole to basically man the whole right side of the field.

Gold star for Shannon, I say.

Cole also had the hardest job on the field marking Elkesen. I thought he was outstanding considering the quality of the player he marked, and the work he put in. Few worked harder for us last night.

Was just reading the 442 forums (I know, kill me) and the amount of people who thought the Guangzhou 'keeper should have been sent off after the challenge against of Bridge, is too damn high!

Brenton Speed included, it seems as is everyone has this idea of 'last man' when looking at the offence. The law states nothing about 'last man' and refers only to 'an obvious goal-scoring opportunity'. Bridge had knocked the ball in front, and then the 'keeper committed the foul. Had it had been the other way around, then yes, a send off, but as it stood the referee was 100% correct.

Similar with the 'pass back' law too, also says nothing about 'passing the ball backwards... what if the 'keeper is in front of the defending player and it's passed to him? (end rant).

At the time he got tripped, the two Evergrande players were behind him. Red card, end of story! The referee didn't see this, instead by the time bridge hit the ground with one roll, the players were past and clearing the ball off the line. It is easy to understand why the referee gave the yellow because the two players were quick but when the foul occurred the goal keeper was the last man who prevented a clear goal scoring opportunity.

    - Hard to process this quarter final win, my head isn't in the game so hard to feel maximum excitement and exactly what this means for WSW

    - Would love to have been at the airport, but I found out too late and my head is elsewhere.... Shame, hopefully plenty of pictures and videos of the home coming!

    - Can anyone point me to some whining Evergrande fans to troll?

Yeah, who would have thought a player knocking the ball over the goalkeeper and being on his own inside the 6 yard box wouldn't be an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Well this ref apparently lol.

I'm not so sure it was a red card. Bridge had to come to almost a complete stop to chip the keeper while the defenders were running full speed and didn't have to stop. When the defender cleared the ball it had only just come down from his chip so even if Bridge had somehow managed to get back up to speed and beat the defenders to the ball he'd be with them waiting for it to come down.

For a team to be in preseason , playing the richest club in its region who is past the halfway point of their season, putting up with all the crap that went on n progress to the Semi Finals , is a monumental effort based on grit , guts , balls , effort , luck , skill , determination n belief. The manager believes they can win , so do the players. I would love to see us play these games whilst we're playing a season ! I still can't believe it , seems like a dream .... a very very good dream! Not as good as a Tara , Mel , Lucy kinda dream though........:P

I don't think Evergrande fans realize that what it means to be from Western Sydney.

We give everyone benefit of the doubt and respect them.

But you cross us, and we don't forget.

They Picked the wrong Sydney team to want to be rivals with.

Next time they come to Parramatta, we will show them what a intimidating atmosphere is.
