  • Western Sydney Dominate Derby But Draw

    mack

Western Sydney should have all three points but slack finishing saw them draw as Bernie Ibini equalised after Tomi Juric gave the Wanderers the lead.

After a quarter hour the Wanderers could have gone ahead if the A-League shared the goal line technology as seen in the Brazil World Cup. Romeo Castelen tore through the heart of the Sydney FC defence and fired a shot that deflected in towards goal, replays showing the ball almost surely was over the line but with no signal from the linesman the referee decided to play on.

On the half hour the Wanderers took a deserved lead. In tight quarters Castelen lobbed a pass to the chest of Juric, who flicked out a right boot to push the ball into the path of Mark Bridge. Unfortunately for Bridge the ball didn't sit up well enough to get a shot away, a block from Sydney FC defender Gersbach only found the feet of Juric who blasted home from 8 yards to open the scoring in the derby.

Nikita Rukavytsya came inches away from doubling the Wanderers advantage just moments after the first goal. Bridge played a delightful through ball for the flying winger and he toed the ball past keeper Janjetovic but could only watch as it arced in towards goal only to bounce off the woodwork.

A breathless 5 minutes was then punctuated by the equaliser. The Wanderers wasted a set piece opportunity with a woeful short corner, Sydney FC managed to clear to Bernie Ibini who ran half the pitch, getting around Adeleke and Hamill before launching a tracer bullet of a shot that was past Covic before he could get a hand up.

Seconds before the half-time break Bridge should have restored the Wanderers lead. Iacopo La Rocca put Bridge clean through one one one with Janjetovic but his first touch took him slightly away from goal and the shot was aimed straight at the keeper.

Shane Smeltz had Sydney FC's best chance in the second half, a header back across goal from a corner was met with a turning volley by the New Zealand international but Covic rose sharply to tip the ball over the bar.

Rukavytsya had his own chances to win the game for his new club and score his first goal for the Wanderers in the process, his blinding pace saw him get in on goal twice, the first a long range effort he could only aim at Janjetovic, the second saw him burst clear of Seb Ryall but his touch let Janjetovic get a sniff of the ball, smothering any chance of a goal.

The Wanderers dominated the match as Sydney FC seemed content to hold on for a point. Western Sydey shaded possession 53% to 47%, with more passes, a better passing accuracy as well as having more shots, crosses and corners in comparison to their opponents in blue. Alas the key stat, goals scored, favoured neither side but the performance was a marked improvement in comparison to the first handful of rounds and if performances like that keep coming then so will wins.

The Wanderers next match is against the Brisbane Roar, on Wednesday the 3rd of December at Parramatta Stadium, kick-off at 7:30pm.

It's not all doom and gloom.  First half I was thinking this is as good as we have played in a long time. The only thing missing is a bit of luck, a decision here and there, a post, a goal line clearance, a dodgy offside call, thats all it is.  Lets be honest we used up a fair bit of our luck in the ACL games, where we were second best on a number of ocassions yet we kept winning and were crowned the best in Asia.  Once that luck balances up we will be right up there.  This year was about winning a GF nothing else, and we can do that from 6th.

Oh yea as an aside my daughter left her black handbag in the Southern stand (Bay 79) accidentally, any clues of anything she can do to maybe have a longshot at getting it back.  Not worried bout money or cards or ****, just a sentimental purse from someone special that she really wants back.  Cheers

Best TIFO ever, A huge thanks to all who made it happen, very much appreciated. Absolute highlight of the night... :grouphug:

Well that and the blu in 'Family/No Alcohol Area' on the way out.... :cheeky:

should of put the smurfs in their own bay on that south side but last night it seemed like bring along an "eastie" to the game night.

actually it wasn't there was plenty of tickets purchased in the south end

i dont know what you were watching or could see but from my view of the south stand there were maybe 100-200 esfc fans in that end scattered around and a chunk on the fence line the rest were in red and black in that end. Simple way of fixing that was to allocate you bay 73 and place security on the edge of 73/74 anyway game is done now onto next week.

    Manfred,

It was inches and centimetres which saved the Smurfs from being down 3 or more goals by half time. Let Ruka score the 2:0 and we have a totally different conversation. That inches and centimetres were missing at times doesn't take anything away from the fact that we saw a great game of football by the WSW. I refuse to be negative about this game.

Sorry poorly worded, I agree there was heaps of SFC fans in the south end. we went into the south end I even told a few wsw fans we were coming and that there was to be around 200-300 of us in bay 73.

we even informed Tony P to try put the correct security in place

On that, what happened to the ESFC mole in ticketmaster? The one they were claiming had managed to get tickets for over a thousand extra smurfs. Maybe since buying tickets they all decided to become turncoats like the rest of us?

I have to say I'm much more positive the more we play.  They still need more time but the more they play together the more the understanding is going to come.  ESFC have improved immeasurably this season and we're in transition with a whole new attack line.  I'll take the positives from what was a much better display and a far more attacking effort.

There's more to come and especially from a couple of the new boys but when I saw the line up on my phone before the game I was pleased.  We need continuity in the line up and we got that last night.  A little bit more here and there and we could have wrapped this one up comfortably.  That's football though.

The one thing I would like to see is the direct ball to wing rather than two passes to get there sometimes.  Yeah it's lower percentage but being able to turn a team around faster and not let them set across the pitch might give Castelen and Ruka more space to run in a one on one situation.

Other than that I came away disappointed not to get a win but positive that the team is headed in the right direction.

no point in talking to you if youre going to be a farkhead... i suggested that they should have accomodated for your fans a bit better in the south end and allocated an extra bay.

The way you guys were making out that you had half the south end all taken up, in actual fact it was more like half of one bay in the south end. Not sure what the ticketdisaster ESFC mole was talking about with 1,000 extra tickets. Maybe if you counted all the ESFC fans scattered throughout the stadium, outside the away bay might have been 500-600 maybe but yeh was quite mystifying!

We won a Champions League based on centimeters and inches, sometimes they go your way, sometimes it doesn't.

    Thats football.

I would be more upset if it was a 1-1 draw if we played ordinary/poorly in both halves and we created no chances and squeezed out a goal from half a chance or a penalty kick.

If we play at the same performance level on wednesday night then we should win, and will challenge Adelaide next Saturday night.

Although I expect to send the second string team to Adelaide (like in Perth earlier this season) and save the first teamers for Morocco

just a snap reaction from me as we've had quite a few trolls in this week amongst our esfc neighbours... all has been sorted though.

its just that last little bit of finish and frigging luck at the moment..the boys were so dominant...Hamill was brilliant..really noticed him, Ruka is a machine...Saba needs a few uppercuts, but that was a massive display of dominance...Frustration must be killing them..

Word on the street prior to the game even from semi-respectable Sydney fans was that they had secured tickets to take over half the South terrace due to their 'friend' at Ticketmaster. I was skeptical but also thought that he could lose his job if this was true and all hell broke loose. Anyway 200-300 at most so no different from previous games.

The first 45 minutes was the best football we've played in a looong time...maybe even ever??

Still confident of getting into the finals based on that...that said at some point we have to start ******* winning. The major problem I see is that whereas until now we've been a counter-attacking team, suddenly, at home at least, we're having all of the ball, playing some really nice stuff, but also allowing teams way more space on the counter than we ever have, which means we're letting a goal in here & there...which wouldn't be a problem if we made the most of our possession and scored more, but we're not doing that at the moment.

But if we can replicate that first 45 we should be alright, you can see the team is getting better with every game.

La Rocca's tackle was 50/50, ridiculous to whinge about it.

I'm going to whinge, why is baccus playing ahead of Trifiro and Perkatis.  I think both boys were there from day dot. If he was 10-20-30 percent better then both I would have no issue. He added no value, also is he not a replacement. this must be causing issues among the group. Never seen tony walk to our rbb and applaud straight after the whistle. also talking romeo was a wrong decision but then we need him on Wednesday.

The video of the La Rocca tackle is here,

It was a 50/50 challenge that La Rocca was more committed to then Abbas.

Abbas got there first and La Rocca mistimed the challenge.

There were no studs in the tackle, it wasn't a super late challenge, Abbas' leg just got caught in the wrong place.

Imo Larocca knew he wasn't getting to the ball, he was looking for an opportunity to send Abbas a message and he did that.

They say that after every derby game lol

Don't they know that if you are in the middle of the away support you always appear to sound louder where you are as the bloke either side of your are shouting as well as the other few thousand around you but in reality compared to the home support it is nothing.

ESFC need to step outside of their own little bubble from time to time and see and hear the reality.

I found it strange that Popa would go with Baccus on debut (I think it was his first game) ahead of Trifino.

Yeah, it's so obvious they were louder due to the MIC near them to appear loud when they were just s**t! Man are they just really dumb or am i losing my IQ points? And last night was a great game even though those near misses didn't go in, that gives us much confidence against the Roar this Wednesday! Bring them on!

That's the only time I heard any noise from the south end last night and that was our South stand supporters.  Even though it was invaded by the ticketmaster insider by giving them a couple of hundred seats.  Wankers.

I will say though great to see ESFC fans out in their shirts having dinner before the game in Church St..  Mostly older fans who don't buy in to the young immature my city balls that can end up in fights.  Good to see and not a hint of hostility at all.  As it should be.

baccus previously came on as a sub v perth. maybe popa thinks baccus is a better player than trifiro and perkatis, he has been to europe. or maybe popa wants to see how baccus goes in games before his stint as injury replacement ends.

baccus had a couple of skilful touches that i thought yeah that's pretty good, but also a couple of bad touches.

Hi all...long long LONG time lurker first time poster...

Was in Bay 70 like a lot of newly minted members and it sounded like "S" rather than east - but I know our Bay quickly gave the west chant which killed off theirs and they came back with something about "2 nil up and we ****ed it up" so its no doubt they didn't like the response

I was lucky(?) enough to have to cross the street in front of the cove march outside the train station and there was plenty of hostility at the dozen or so Wanderers fans crossing with me - and those jackoffs were still continuing with it on the front rows of Bay 71 - but for all their barking nothing came of it, I saw plenty in the south - and Bays around us giving plenty back

    • Its also mainly Robbie Slater pushing it and has written several articles complaining about the new deal. So that's the other thing to keep in mind. I don't know if its because he is salty he didn't get picked up by anyone but he has continually attacked the new broadcast deal using buzz words "WORST" "TERRIBLE" "NEVER HAS FOOTBALL BEEN IN A WORST POSITION". Keep in mind Slater did play during the worst time in Australian football history back in 90s. Bloke forgets the treatment Fox gave the A-league in the final 3 years and how they gave up on A-league and football in general after losing EPL and losing subs to Optus.   Also note that Hill specifically addresses the opinions of the panelists Bozza and mainly Slater for their opinion on the tv deal. Hill actually agreed with a lot of the things Adam Peacock said and researched and actually requested for APL to respond to allegations. Bozza hasn't really watched A-league because he does a lot of analyses for Stan on Champions league something he himself has admitted but Slater has been none stop attacking A-league since it left Fox, with random rants but at the same time never acknowledging the poor crap Fox gave us, he never takes accountability of what he says.   Also note recent articles from newscorp attacking ch10 like in the next decade it will cease to exit article. So I don't if its a possible take over of certain ch10 assets, discrediting ch10 to get rights of certain shows on the cheap or just the usual rival networks having a go but newscorp is flexing on ch10.
    • He admits some bias by being an employee but even still, I feel that he’s overly simplified the whole paramount relationship and in doing so, glossed over many of the flaws.
    • I agree with lot of it but disagree with some of it. APL still got dudded by the Paramount deal, the incentivise deal was more like Paramount saying they will not pay cash.
