  • Western Sydney Wanderers Are Champions Of Asia

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have been crowned the Champions of Asia after a stoic 0-0 draw in Saudi Arabia, the Wanderers winning the two legged tie 1-0 on aggregate following Tomi Juric's goal in Sydney in the first leg.

The 64th minute strike in the first leg at Parramatta Stadium proved to be the only goal of the tie, with the "Blue Wave" crashing forlornly against a Red & Black fortification manned by a team who refused to concede a goal to their better resourced opponents.

In the 18th minute Al Hilal had the first chance of the game, swinging a free kick from the left flank that the Wanderers weren't able to get anything on, thankfully for them neither did one of their opponents, a right boot stuck out but agonisingly distant from making contact.

A minute before half-time the first penalty shout of the night was waved away by Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura. Inside the area a ball rolled into the path of the flying Nawaf Shaker, Antony Golec clipped the right foot of the attacker but the theatrical leap perhaps weighed the incidence in the favour of the Australians.

After the break it was another stonewall penalty turned down, Salman Alfaraj latching onto a through ball deep in the right corner of the penalty area and was clearly brought down by Ante Covic but wasn't punished for the indiscretion. Another potential penalty came when the ball was kicked at short range into arms of Brendon Santalab, Nishimura judging that it was ball to hand rather than hand to ball.

The Saudi's pushed on and on, pressing for a goal that would take the game into extra time, and it looked for all money like they had one in the 84th minute. A cutback found talismanic striker Yasser Al-Qahtani, his shot from near the penalty spot had no right to be saved but the big hand of Covic found a way. The ball bounced once before spinning out for a corner just inches away from the goalpost. The save was the biggest moment for an Australian keeper since Mark Schwarzer in the famous shootout against Uruguay.

The Wanderers had precious little attack of their own, the best chance coming from a mazy Vitor Saba dribble that released Labinot Haliti, the shot being blocked desperately. Western Sydney didn't need a goal however, an eventual 6 minutes of injury time passed before the final whistle blew and the Wanderers were officially crowned Champions of Asia.

The immediate post-game scene was marked by disgraceful conduct from the Al Hilal players, with Matthew Spiranovic being spat on and headbutted, a melee threatened to breakout but cooler heads prevailed.

The extraordinary end to the Wanderers maiden assault on the continental stage ended in a victory that few if any would have predicted in the first year or even second year of the club's existence. The championship is an eternal credit to the tactical nous of Tony Popovic, and the resilience of every man to have pulled on the famous Red & Black hoops of Western Sydney.

The Club World Cup now looms in December, the Wanderers joining San Lorenzo (CONMEBOL), Real Madrid (UEFA), ES Setif (CAF), Cruz Azul (CONCACAF), Auckland City (OFC) & hosts Moghreb Tetouan in Morocco from the 10th of December. The Wanderers will face Cruz Azul of Mexico for the right to face European giants Real Madrid in the semi-final. Such a class would be the biggest competitive fixture for an Australian side since South Melbourne took on Manchester United in the 2000 edition of the competition.

Tony Popovic spoke after the match about the win, "We were called a small club yesterday. Today we are the biggest in Asia."

The next match for the Champions of Asia is against the Wellington Phoenix, on Friday the 7th of November.

Congratulations guys .. you did a great match .. you defended well and deserved the trophy ..

i'm still sad and disappointed ..

it appears the ACL is impossible for us to win ..

its just like a curse  :sorry:

Over the last couple of weeks we have got to see two sides of the Al Halil fans. Many that have come on this forum have been very courteous, a love of their team but respect for the opposition. It is a shame that we also got to see the ugly side in this morning's game.

We appear to have lost BOSS and Khalid in the process. Maybe they are busy reflecting on why the blue wave failed to carry their team. Maybe they are contemplating their coach's broken promises. Or could it be that they are thinking about the difference between respect and arrogance, and how the latter was displayed by their coach, and how it was applauded by the local journalists?

Maybe their coach should have reflected on Steaua Bucarest's history. After all he is a former Bucarest man. He might have come across the 1986 cup winners final between Barca and Steaua in Seville. It was effectively a home game for Barca in front of 75k, and Barca was convinced that victory was theirs.

But there was a tiny problem: Steaua. The game ended 0:0 after 120 mins. In the penalty shootout Steaua's goalkeeper saved four penalties, and the title went to Romania. Funny that.

There could have been a message in all of this for Al-Hilal's coach, but he was too busy wearing tea towels, talk his side up, and belittle the opponent. People like BOSS and Khalid believed his and ultimately their owns stories, and get to hide under a rock now.

Do I care? Not in the least.

PS I really enjoyed the Al Hilal fans in Parramatta. They were a joy to have around.

Frank Lowy is giving him a call because he wants Covic in goals for the socceroos and the only way that will happen is if he gets rid of Postecoglou  :ninja:

Cant wait till KSA come to Australia for Asian Cup, will be taunting Shamrani, i doubt he will get a ban, maybe a 1 game suspension at max, Asia is more corrupt than Blatter, especially with KSA and Qatar, hopefully he gets a lenghty ban though, still ill be giving it to him all game, i invite all WSW fans to join me and make his stay in Australia VERY VERY UNPLEASANT!

We're going to take out the premiership and the premier's plate this year too. Just watch.

The premiers plate is a bit of an ask especially given our start and a very overloaded schedule but I sense another first coming on i.e first team to become A-League "Champions" from outside the top two in the league?  Now that would be sweet.

Do our headquarters at the athletics field even have space for a trophy cabinet?

I'm assuming that it will go wherever the 2012-13 premiers plate is,

probably in John Tsatsimas office or in the main reception desk.

Also is that our trophy to keep?

Or do we have to hand it back?

What a day/night we will remember this day forever. It was so good to celebrate with my wanderers family at the live site. I really have to say a big thank you to foxtel and a massive thank you to Parramatta council...without your work it would not have been as memorable.

Do they give out a new premiers plate every year??

    Congratulations!!!

Well done guys (and girls) on what is a wonderful achievement for you all (and Australian football also).

Although I would have loved Brisbane to be the first Australian club to win the Asian Champions League, but as we weren't I am just grateful it wasn't either Sydney or Melbourne Victory (so thank you).

Once again, congrats, well done and enjoy your success. You all deserve it.

I remember what year my daughter was born because the Dragons won the NRL grand final in 2010, around the time she was born.

When my next bub comes in just over two weeks I'll always remember 2014.

    :acl:

My little guy was born 6 weeks ago, just in time to witness history.

He Woke up a minute before the final whistle.

    Congratulations!!!

My little girl is due this week ... Actually hoping she can hang on untill after the airport tomorrow

I dont like how Bouzanis has planted himself in the middle of almost all of the team celebration photos. No big deal.. but.. that spot should be filled by the main man in yellow. But.... whatevs.

Saw some snippets on the news of the celebrations that took place and was great to hear Iacopo singing, "He saves to the left! He saves to the right! He's Ante Covic He saves them all night!"

Well, it had "Champion's League 2014" on it, so i assume we  keep it. You're usually allowed to make a replica for display/posterity if a trophy does have to be handed back.
