Evergrande had huge turnouts in their last visits to Australia. What could their allocation be?? I can't wait for this match!

Sydney Stars? Isn't that the local netball team...

    That would be the Swifts.

Melbourne Stars is a big bash league team.

    ACL rule 36 c)

Once the AFC Official Registration Form has been completed and submitted via AFCAS,seven (7) days prior to the first match day of Quarter-Final in the Competition, up to three (3) players may be replaced in the event that they are medically unfit to play (certified by doctor in
English). AFC must receive a detailed medical assessment to be reviewed by any member of the AFC Medical Panel which confirms whether the injury is sufficiently serious to prevent the player from taking part in the Competition. The club shall then immediately nominate in writing a
replacement player in compliance with Art 33 & 34 of these Regulations. Until the replacement player has received his AFC Eligibility card, he will not be considered to have been registered for the Competition

    Mums the word.

We're all assuming Spira was included in the 23 man squad lodged by 19th July, however, his injury situation & the need for surgery may have been known by club prior to this date.

He'll be fit for the semis and final

Whether we would want to replace him would depend on the quality of player we would replace him with I guess. I mean, if the Troisi rumours were true, I'd say go ahead and replace him, there will be no semis unless we get through the quarter. However, if it just a matter of some youth/back up players, then you would surely leave Spira in there, as the replacement is unlikely to get any game time in the quarter anyway.

Is there ticket info? Just had a look on the website but didn't find anything, might have missed it though. Clicking on the "tickets" link just brings up the a league matches.

Twist: Gol Gol was also listed in the ACL squad!

    You have the list?

Would have thought it would have been at least till November/December that he could be back at the very earliest if he had a "Robbie Kruse" like recovery!

Another injury replacement for us though!

Really worried about the quality of opposition we are up against in pre season as we try and get match hardened for the Asian champions...

Its been 2 games. Do you want the guys to go out there against top quality opposition right away after an off season and risk injury? These games are purely for getting match fitness into the legs, not to push themselves to the brink.

Indeed, I think a few of the first teamers like Saba, Santa and maybe Juric will get a run out next Tuesday night at Leichardt and then step it up another level in the FFA Cup in Adelaide.

Need games like yesterday for Popa to get a look at some other players and get fitness up as you say.

Understand and agree, no point pushing too hard at this stage with a long season ahead... Goal will be to have full squad ready for round 1.. (except spira now) and fit for another huge multi faceted campaign..

Just **** timing for a-league clubs but can't do anything about that.

I do have faith in the boys stepping up for the games, just conscious of match hardness especially with the away leg.

Nah I know what you're saying. The ACL is putting a spanner in the works for our preseason prep for the HAL. Its going to be a massive step up in intensity after playing state league clubs. Its a huge test, but other HAL clubs have had to deal with this too. Its the nature of us playing in Summer whereas the entire AFC region plays in our winter.

really we should be "fresher" compared to the other AFC nations/teams playing during Winter, that can only be a good thing right???

The Asian clubs all had the time during the WC off playing some friendly games, which probably keeps them fresh for the second half of the season.

The fact is we need to win and not concede in the first leg at home.

2-0 win would be nice. Steal an away goal the week later  to seal the deal :)

I would settle for 0-0 in the first leg and 1-1 in the second leg. That's all we need......... easy right?

Not if we don't have any combinations toigether up front. We will need to score a few goals to beat Guangzhou, they can attack. Heart alone isn't going to do it.

    • AFC cup overall was more like NPL standards, not taking anything away from the Mariners, it was expected that either them or  MacArthur should go on to win it and they did very well. But it also shows the massive gap between the ACL and the AFC Cup. AFC are revamping it for next season in which there will be 2 ACL divisions, the ACL elite which the Mariners qualified for and the ACL2 which the Smurfs are in, I'd thought we would get an extra slot for the Elite after Mariners won would have brought the Vucks into the ACL elite at the very least.
    • They won the plate last season and I thought their only real weak link was Glover, who they upgraded to Young. They lost Valon Berisha, but Arslan was also an upgrade as a replacement. I think they relied too much on Maclaren. Last season he scored 24 league goals. Had he done that again this season they'd be way up the table. Instead he scored 7. They finished the season with the third most goals scored, but 23 of their 50 goals came in three games (8-1 vs Roar, 7-0 v us, 8-0 vs Perth). They scored 27 goals in the remaining 24 games. As a comparison, if you take out the Mariners three highest scoring games they scored 35 in the remaining 24 games.
