  • Bonevacia Leads Wanderers To Victory

    mack

A 3-1 win for the Western Sydney Wanderers has continued their mini-revival, with their second win in a row keeping them within touching distance of the Newcastle Jets on the A-League ladder.

Adelaide kicked off on a perfect evening for football, Adelaide in 4th place wearing their all red kit, and the Wanderers in 8th and their change black kit. Adelaide set the tone of the game early, with Isaías scything down Roly Bonevacia from behind with a disgraceful kick out. The referee awarded a foul but not the clearly deserved yellow card.

The home side went to the professional foul well once too often and they were punished by the Wanderers after 10 minutes. George Blackwood gave away the foul and then was beaten all ends up on the resultant cross by his marker Oriol Riera, the cross from Bonevacia found the big strikers head on the edge of the 6 yard box, Adelaide keeper Izzo stayed on his line and Riera found the back of the net for his first goal of 2019.

Kris Griffiths Jones managed to insert himself into the game from his VAR position shortly after the goal. Despite the centre official waving away a soft penalty shout, he was called to the sideline by the VAR and his decision was over-turned. Brendan Hamill had stuck out a foot to try and block an incoming cross, he missed Jordy Thomassen only for the Dutch striker to dive over Hamill's leg. Justice was done from the penalty spot, with Goodwin's awful penalty being saved to Vedran Janjetovic's right side.

After half an hour of backs to the wall defending for Western Sydney, Janjetovic cancelled out his penalty save with another example of poor goalkeeping this season. An aimless Adelaide cross from Jakobsen was nowhere near the attacking players, Vedran leapt into the air, but instead of simply catching the ball he 'punched', for lack of a better term, with the ball dribbling about 3 yards forward into the pitch, Ryan Kitto ran onto the ball, got to it before the Wanderers defence could react and he smashed it past a stationary Janetovic.

Replays showed that Thomassen was in an offside position when the cross was taken, and subsequently he knocked into Brendan Hamill, unfortunately as is the normal case with the linesman when the Wanderers play Adelaide, they ignored the offside, and then the VAR didn't bother checking. After such a huge fuss was made about Jaushua Sotiro's "offside" offence in the first Sydney Derby, surely if the VAR was being consistent Thomassen would have been called offside on review and the goal chalked off.

The Wanderers regained their lead with a goal very much against the run of play 10 minutes after the interval. A right side throw-in from Tate Russel rolled through for Roly Bonevacia, and he took an invitation to run into the Adelaide defence and fire a strike that took a heavy deflection from an attempted block, leaving Paul Izzo wrong-footed and unable to even attempt a save.

The visitors took a commanding 3-1 lead 20 minutes from full time. Roly Bonevacia, having an absolutely storming game, was found by a Riera flick-on, the midfielder watched the ball drop then hit an elevated through ball for the excellent run of Abraham Majok and with Izzo rushing out the young striker perfectly executed a lob that dropped gracefully into the empty net.

Bonevacia could have had a double right before stoppage time, as he went on a length of the field sprinting dribble into the Adelaide penalty area only to have his attempted nutmeg shot blocked by Izzo, the rebound kept out again and a lay off to Majok being slightly overhit and not giving him a chance to put away the fourth. Adelaide pressed hard, and despite a number of Wanderers going down with cramp, the Red & Black held their lead, refusing to even give up a consolation goal. The clear man of the match was Bonevacia, who arguably had his best game at the club since his arrival. Markus Babbel had said in the media that he would refuse to give away the rest of the season, and it appears his mentality has filtered down onto the pitch tonight.

The Wanderers have closed the gap to Newcastle Jets in 7th to 6 points, and face Perth Glory at the Sydney Showground Homebush next Sunday the 24th at 7pm.

Loved this away trip, which to be fair was made so much better because of the win and the way the lads lifted in the second half. I could yammer about how the individual players contributed, overall tactics, ref performance etc but instead want to focus on the pleasure of being at a stadium with full strength Coopers Pale, proper distance between pitch & seats, and catching up with my Adelaide based & supporting relos after the game and having a laugh. Might write up more later, but shout out to team Andy for the company at the Gov pre & during the game. Also for those of us who tried to get the traveling fans up after the 'eviction' good work. Seems like forever since doing a passionate Poznan.

I’ve done Sunday morning grog bogs that provided more footballing insight than Andy-*******-Harper. Best to let it go, you’ll give yourself an aneurism if you worry about him too much mate

I think those 2 goals we scored in the 2nd half were very lucky ones and I dont think we score any more luckier goal than Roly's deflecting of the Adelaide player and scoring.

Paul Izzo, I dont know how he is regarded as one of the best GKs in the league where he has problems with set pieces, he was just rooted to the spot with Roly's free kick and it was good to see Riera bury that one in.

As for the game itself, it was more like a game of 3 halves, in the first 25min, we dominated them, then the next 20, our players just sat back too deep and allowed AUFC to attack and we were very lucky they didn't score more than 1 in the first half, I'll forgive Vedran for punching the ball out rather than catching it, he did well to save the penalty.

Big game next week against Perf, hopefully Yeboah and ABJ are both fully fit and starting, would like to see Duke start as well

For the refs, Isaias is a champion player...Roly is a diver and so lets those things pass...you cant tell me the VAR isnt the same for us  (the classic example was Santa - yellows left and right for a alot of minor stuff...but cops a bent elbow in the face, nothing)

And might makes right I guess in reffing and  it seems also in commentating...all the pre game talk from Fox was all Adelaide, and mom would be Goodwin...so I guess they go into the game with that in the back of their minds that Reds marching onwards to finals 'glory' , and Wanderers putting up the usual dross..wasting everyone's time

Harper is in the Slater class of commentating: somewhere between whether an empty chair or a kiwi commentator might be better....On the plus I think our performance shocked him so bad he forgot to refer to ESFC every chance he could...

So it wasn't all a dream..... Was very poor in the first half, lucky reds didn't capitalise on our slow backs mistakes and only for good fortune and Roly showing some passion in playing that we produced and decent second half.

Dare i say we might turn it around and finish the season with a little face and momentum.

This would be the minimum standard expected by the club, manager and fans. Tbh I'm actually excited about us not for this season but next......can see some really positives sides to what the manager is doing.

Duke has shown he will put in......same with Yeboah...........and the young guys. Good signs.....finally.

Anyone else looking at the next few games and thinking we might get closer to top 6 than people think?

also was Majoks chip actually an attempt to trap the ball?

The Mount Druitt Messi had it under control.

Maybe that's what he's been trying to do in all the previous games....chip the goalkeeper.

Well let's see if my email about Harper's bias gets to him.

I just feedback to fox football about his bias. If he is not shocked, he might discuss on their Wed podcast.

Chances are he and Simon Hill will go on rants about how the average Joe isn't worthy to critisize anything in the game, or at least, them.

It was lucky, but it’s also what happens when you shoot ***** and just generally have a positive attacking mindset.

Of course, but as far as main stream media is concerned, all Wanderers fans are RBB.

It's on their shitty 7 Adelaide page. It's not getting any traction though. Better to just ignore it. Probably started by some racist Adelaide dweller, or maybe the tweens in the Adelaide ultra group wanted to punch on.

Well my son was one of those who left with the group after a number had already been evicted. But not before cops took his licence details. Apparently an Adelaide fan came up to them and was saluting them Nazi-style and when my son told them to f#*@ off the cops did him for language. Seems they prefer white supremacists over bad language in good old Adelaide.....

This is weird. When we descended upon Adelaide in huge numbers for the GF, the cops were fine, were flares let off (pretty sure they were) and nothing happened.

Now we’ve got ejections followed by cops treating people like ****. Almost like it was planned.

Yeah i mean they weren't saints. I believe a few tried to bring smokeys into the ground and fair enough they were denied entry but it's the heavy-handed nonsense in response to things like bad language and then the somewhat amusing sight of numerous cop cars escorting the tram with guys on it back into town that makes it laughable. Reminds me of the Sheriff in a western kicking unwanteds out of town to the city limits🤣
