  • Golec Guns Down Guangzhou

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers will take a 1-0 aggregate lead into the second leg of their Asian Champions League quarter final after a remarkable match against ACL Champions Guangzhou Evergrande were beaten by a goal to Antony Golec, followed by finishing the match with just 9 men on the park.

Golec claimed the winner on the hour mark, cutting inside from the left flank before delivering a low cross that beat everyone including the Chinese goalkeeper, who was frozen by the run of Tomi Juric, before nestling into the bottom right hand corner.

Evergrande saw two red cards and their World Cup winning manager Marcello Lippi may face further sanctions as chaos reigned following the dismissals of Zeng Linpeng in the 88th minute and Gao Lin in the 90th.

Shannon Cole has the best chance of the first half, after Haliti stormed down the wing he put a wonderful cross that beat the leaping Evergrande defence, only to see Cole glance the header wide when he should have put his side in front. Liao Lisheng smacked a ball moments before the break that Covic turned away.

The second half was all Wanderers from the opening stages, Tomi Juric menacing the diminutive Chinese defenders and being the cause of the goal from Golec despite not getting a touch. Vitor Saba made his Parramatta Stadium debut and made an immediate impact, gliding around his opponents and drawing numerous fouls, while also showing an appetite for the hard defensive that he will require playing in the A-League for Western Sydney.

Chaos reigned in the last moments of the game, as Linpeng smashed La Rocca with an elbow and was shown a straight red, followed minutes later by compatriot Lin who kicked Vitor Saba in the face and quickly joined Linpeng for an early shower. At that point Lippi stormed onto the pitch and confronted the referee, who eventually regained control, denied Juric a penalty in the final seconds then ended the match.

The result means any draw or win for the Wanderers will see them through to the Semi-Final, while even a 2-1 loss would be enough to progress on away goals.

The Wanderers next match is Leg 2 of the Asian Champions League quarter finals against Guangzhou Evergrande, in China, played on Wednesday the 27th of August.

And why were all the inside tables reserved, with no one in most of em for the time we were there..?

Luckily we got there early enuf to get a table inside, and the table service was pretty good, thank god as the line at the bar went out the rear door and the other line near the front door...

The new Hofbrau Schwarze they have on tap was a good drop, being there for happy hour means a number brews had to consumed - it just makes sense..

Lucky you, I had only one instead of the usual four beers last night. Why the hell they sell the worst beer in Australia at Pirtek. The makers don't even know how to spell beer "XXXX".

Höfbrau Dunkel? That's my go to in the litre steins.

Jack, I was sorely tempted but home was a-calling...if I'd have known you were definitely there would have dropped in

The HB Schwarze sits somewhere between the Dunkel and the regular Weisse.

But the real issue for the night is, why was La Rocca the only one warming up in the ACL training jersey..? I have one of those and I'd like to see it getting a run...  ppl will think its some ebay dodgy, otherwise...  first world problem..!!

That stink was ding my head in. At first I laughed it off as a passing bit of nastiness but it just lingered and became an ever powerful force. It was like we were sitting in a canoe in a river of ****. Whoever it was, you got us man. But please, show some mercy next time.

PRESSURE is growing on Asian football chiefs to charge Guangzhou Evergrande coach Marcello Lippi with serious misconduct after it was revealed security staff called police to secure the referee’s dressing room in the aftermath of Western Sydney’s Champions League win.

Lippi said after the quarter-final first leg tie that he had tried to speak to referee Mohammed Abdulla Hassan Mohamed, but eyewitnesses said events in the players’ tunnel became so heated that police were called to intervene.

Marcello Lippi confronts the referee.Source: AFP It’s believed the incident was subsequently raised with the Asian Football Confederation’s match commissioner, who then held a lengthy meeting with the referee.

Lippi is already facing a charge after entering the pitch to remonstrate with the referee after first Gao Lin and then Zhang Linpeng were dismissed in the final moments.

As the acrimony from the game showed no sign of abating ahead of next Wednesday’s second leg, the social media accounts of Brazilian attacker Vitor Saba, whose clash with Gao prompted the latter’s dismissal, were flooded with abuse and threats.

Saba’s Wanderers teammtate Iacopo La Rocca, the apparent victim of striking from Zhang, posted online a picture of his cut and swollen mouth just before it was stitched by club doctors.

La Rocca also made a pointed reference to “my chinese friends for the sweets comments and i didn’t expect also for some “fans†of #westernsydneywanderersâ€, after both he and Saba came under fire for their reactions to the respective incidents.

A Chinese newspaper published photos of mysterious abrasions on Zhang’s arm, which it said he did not discover until after the game and could not be sure if they were caused by a bite or a scratch.

La Rocca emphatically denied any suggestion of causing either, though he was booked for shirt-pulling in the moments before being struck.

Saba was also booked in the game, as was striker Tomi Juric for alleged simulation – adding to a lengthy list of Western Sydney players who carry the threat of suspension into the second leg.

Seven players in total will miss the semifinal should Western Sydney progress if they get a booking in Guangzhou next Wednesday, including Brendan Santalab, Shannon Cole, Daniel Alessi and Brendan Hamill.

    Saba the game changer1:33

Tony Popovic acknowleged the need for his players to keep their heads in the second leg when “emotions will run highâ€.

“We anticipate it will be tough, but I bet they’re going home thinking it will be equally tough,†Popovic said.

“We know it won’t be easy, we’ve seen what they’ve done to opponents in the league and in the champions’ league.

“No one’s getting carried away, we’re just in front – we’ll see how we go. It’ll be an amazing atmosphere, you want to play in these games.

“Emotions will be high, and we have to keep ours in check and make sure we do our talking on the pitch.â€

Western Sydney played down the inflammatory material posted online, content that existing security measures will be sufficient for next week’s game.

“We have every confidence in the processes the AFC has in place for the Champions League and look forward to being greeted with the same embracing hospitality as we have received for each of our visits to China throughout this competition and our pre-season tour to Guangzhou last year,†said CEO John Tsatsimas.

It was obvious that they wanted to play the long ball game down the sides, it worked several times too - hope that gets dealt with next match.

I checked out Vitor's Instagram and was disgusted, just spent 20 min out-trolling them though.

    • Security for the green hills had also been significantly scaled back. No security and police patrolling the northern terrace. Who needs them anyway?

It certainly didn't look the same without the 20+ police officers, hovering behind the Northern Terrace!

    Looked almost... peaceful!

Is it just me or does that article read that some WSW have abused La Rocca? If so, not cool.

I think some Australian fans gave it to him for going to ground so easily, but we can see that the wack to the mouth he recieved that it was quite brutal! To tell you the truth I thought he feigned it too because I didn't see too much on the replay but it just shows not a lot of contact needs to be made to make his mark!

I don't like the idea of people turning on our own players while they are doing their all for the team. Acting selfishly and not for the team is different, but you couldn't say that about La Rocca.

I agree with your sentiment about the incident.
