  • Golec Guns Down Guangzhou

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers will take a 1-0 aggregate lead into the second leg of their Asian Champions League quarter final after a remarkable match against ACL Champions Guangzhou Evergrande were beaten by a goal to Antony Golec, followed by finishing the match with just 9 men on the park.

Golec claimed the winner on the hour mark, cutting inside from the left flank before delivering a low cross that beat everyone including the Chinese goalkeeper, who was frozen by the run of Tomi Juric, before nestling into the bottom right hand corner.

Evergrande saw two red cards and their World Cup winning manager Marcello Lippi may face further sanctions as chaos reigned following the dismissals of Zeng Linpeng in the 88th minute and Gao Lin in the 90th.

Shannon Cole has the best chance of the first half, after Haliti stormed down the wing he put a wonderful cross that beat the leaping Evergrande defence, only to see Cole glance the header wide when he should have put his side in front. Liao Lisheng smacked a ball moments before the break that Covic turned away.

The second half was all Wanderers from the opening stages, Tomi Juric menacing the diminutive Chinese defenders and being the cause of the goal from Golec despite not getting a touch. Vitor Saba made his Parramatta Stadium debut and made an immediate impact, gliding around his opponents and drawing numerous fouls, while also showing an appetite for the hard defensive that he will require playing in the A-League for Western Sydney.

Chaos reigned in the last moments of the game, as Linpeng smashed La Rocca with an elbow and was shown a straight red, followed minutes later by compatriot Lin who kicked Vitor Saba in the face and quickly joined Linpeng for an early shower. At that point Lippi stormed onto the pitch and confronted the referee, who eventually regained control, denied Juric a penalty in the final seconds then ended the match.

The result means any draw or win for the Wanderers will see them through to the Semi-Final, while even a 2-1 loss would be enough to progress on away goals.

The Wanderers next match is Leg 2 of the Asian Champions League quarter finals against Guangzhou Evergrande, in China, played on Wednesday the 27th of August.

My favourite quote from all the media I have seen today. "One day Popavics side will stop surprising us, but not just yet."

Great game. Once the team start to gel. They wil start to tear things up. Guangzhou Evergrande and their Coach, imploded because they were beaten by a team which fought them for every ball and every inch of the park. For me this team were our biggest hurdle. Can not wait for next week. Great team performance.

I work with ESL students...and have to correct this ^^^^  sort of scrambled expression often. Where Google Translate has been employed, the kids can get into a lot of difficulty.

Stuck up on the staff room wall is this little gem,  which had its creator ( a Yr 9 Taiwanese boy), his friends and myself greatly amused when I pointed out the errors of this translation.

Maybe the kid likes to wear pants and a jacket that is the same size as a kangaroo?

One thing's for certain: the big guns don't come down quietly. They come down crushing, and make a lot of noise. There is an aura of self importance about Evergrande, and it must hurt them to be found out as the dirty pricks they are.

Next week they will be right up for it, that's for sure. We have got to expect an intense atmosphere and them to come out all guns blazing. I also don't expect too many friendly calls next week either.

Having said that, if they get too emotional, it gives us a real chance. So often teams playing catch up in the manner Evergrande probably will leave themselves very exposed. If we score, I see us going thorugh. If we don't it will be tough.

What a great game and a great night. Not that my opinion on this really matters, but the song choice and timing from the Capos was brilliant. The "ole, ole" chant is really effective at the back end of a game, it getrs the whole crowd going.

    Oh, and **** Lippi.

Incredibly impressed with Juric tonight, Well deserved man of the match in my opinion. especially to not crack the #28 in the face after he grappled him around the head. Onya covic for a fantastic game. COYW!!

I was worried he was going to get too carried away and get himself sent off as well. Glad he didn't, he could be very useful next week. I really get the feeling we will have one or two key chances to nail as they push and push, and Tomi is the man for that job.

I did notice security get a bit nervous when most people started putting their scarves over their faces.

I have sources that indicate some ****img **** was ripping fart bombs before and then during the game. Smell made it all the way into the middle of 56. Wanted to die. Felt i was suffocating.

Ahhh okay! Yeah it made it very difficult to carry on making noise, They must have been industrial strength fart bombs.

A furious Marcello Lippi has accused Western Sydney Wanderers FC players of trying to get his players sent off after his nine-man Guangzhou were toppled 1-0 by the Wanderers in a fiery ACL first leg quarter final on Wednesday night.

“…It’s not good in soccer to see like their number 10 (Saba) to be falling down and being so fake. It’s not good to see that sort of thing. For the good of the Asian Champions League we don’t want to see these type of things anymore.â€

The best thing about all this social media butthurt is that now we're really arriving as a football team in a global sense. Most of the time our victories in big games are met with a pout, a sniff and a half hearted "we were here first".

And not one of these GE fans has said we were lucky. Because they know it wasn't luck :P

    • Obviously I'm sure he assumed he wouldn't get caught, but how much would he be getting to risk another year or two on a likely 6 figure wage even if he had to move to a new club.
    • Is that why he's forever on the ground. Trying to rack up yellow cards. Makes sense now.
    • ^ Yep, exactly that, took me a while to find a picture of it. NPL TV uses the camera position adjacent to the commentary box as the only location. For the Women's season there is a temporary scaffold placed behind the scoreboard, which I believe is done in order to give a better view of the crowd and to avoid the setting sun in afternoon games (commonly seen in afternoon NPL games).
