  • Western Sydney Wanderers Are Champions Of Asia

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have been crowned the Champions of Asia after a stoic 0-0 draw in Saudi Arabia, the Wanderers winning the two legged tie 1-0 on aggregate following Tomi Juric's goal in Sydney in the first leg.

The 64th minute strike in the first leg at Parramatta Stadium proved to be the only goal of the tie, with the "Blue Wave" crashing forlornly against a Red & Black fortification manned by a team who refused to concede a goal to their better resourced opponents.

In the 18th minute Al Hilal had the first chance of the game, swinging a free kick from the left flank that the Wanderers weren't able to get anything on, thankfully for them neither did one of their opponents, a right boot stuck out but agonisingly distant from making contact.

A minute before half-time the first penalty shout of the night was waved away by Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura. Inside the area a ball rolled into the path of the flying Nawaf Shaker, Antony Golec clipped the right foot of the attacker but the theatrical leap perhaps weighed the incidence in the favour of the Australians.

After the break it was another stonewall penalty turned down, Salman Alfaraj latching onto a through ball deep in the right corner of the penalty area and was clearly brought down by Ante Covic but wasn't punished for the indiscretion. Another potential penalty came when the ball was kicked at short range into arms of Brendon Santalab, Nishimura judging that it was ball to hand rather than hand to ball.

The Saudi's pushed on and on, pressing for a goal that would take the game into extra time, and it looked for all money like they had one in the 84th minute. A cutback found talismanic striker Yasser Al-Qahtani, his shot from near the penalty spot had no right to be saved but the big hand of Covic found a way. The ball bounced once before spinning out for a corner just inches away from the goalpost. The save was the biggest moment for an Australian keeper since Mark Schwarzer in the famous shootout against Uruguay.

The Wanderers had precious little attack of their own, the best chance coming from a mazy Vitor Saba dribble that released Labinot Haliti, the shot being blocked desperately. Western Sydney didn't need a goal however, an eventual 6 minutes of injury time passed before the final whistle blew and the Wanderers were officially crowned Champions of Asia.

The immediate post-game scene was marked by disgraceful conduct from the Al Hilal players, with Matthew Spiranovic being spat on and headbutted, a melee threatened to breakout but cooler heads prevailed.

The extraordinary end to the Wanderers maiden assault on the continental stage ended in a victory that few if any would have predicted in the first year or even second year of the club's existence. The championship is an eternal credit to the tactical nous of Tony Popovic, and the resilience of every man to have pulled on the famous Red & Black hoops of Western Sydney.

The Club World Cup now looms in December, the Wanderers joining San Lorenzo (CONMEBOL), Real Madrid (UEFA), ES Setif (CAF), Cruz Azul (CONCACAF), Auckland City (OFC) & hosts Moghreb Tetouan in Morocco from the 10th of December. The Wanderers will face Cruz Azul of Mexico for the right to face European giants Real Madrid in the semi-final. Such a class would be the biggest competitive fixture for an Australian side since South Melbourne took on Manchester United in the 2000 edition of the competition.

Tony Popovic spoke after the match about the win, "We were called a small club yesterday. Today we are the biggest in Asia."

The next match for the Champions of Asia is against the Wellington Phoenix, on Friday the 7th of November.

I am also still buzzing this morning...................... BUT at some point over the coming few weeks the next target is to send a message to the A League that we are coming for them and that this won't affect us. I don't know.... it is just the way I am, I guess I need to stand back and chill and appreciate this more...... but I tend to always look at the next target and focus on that also.

And you can bet your **** life that the next game will be in Popa's mind at some point today. Personally I would like Mack to get the next A League fixture thread up and running, get some focus on that going also.

Yes I am the kind of guy that pulls the xmas decorations down on new years day and says thank **** that is over... now get the *** back to work :P  That was my old mans work ethic lol I suspect Popa might be the same.

Lets enjoy the arrival home tonight................ then we have some *** hard graft to do all over again.

Congratulations guys .. you did a great match .. you defended well and deserved the trophy ..

i'm still sad and disappointed ..

it appears the ACL is impossible for us to win ..

its just like a curse :sorry:

    Thanks Faisal!

    Your team is impressive ..

its just as simple as that ..

some people think that if you attack or if you got that ball the most then you deserve to win ..

it hasn't been ever this way ..

you played with a world class tactic .. your players got the discipline to stay back and defend .. this what brings glory !!

now, i consider myself a WSW fan ..  :xbop:  :wanderturtle:

i will watch every coming game that's for sure .. i may even attend a game or two when ever i have the chance ..

the new ACL will start in 2-3 months ..

we will play our best to reach the final ..

and who knows .. we may face each other again :D

i really respect how gracious you are in defeat, its a trait that is sadly lacking among most people but a very good trait

Very classy in defeat my friend... A lot of supporters (ours too) could learn from you, as well as some of the Al Hilal players... Good to see this and best of luck next season.

Covic would've saved all three pens anyway! Ref waved play on just to keep the game flowing.

    Playing advantage I see ;)

Well, ****. We won and it still hasn't sunk in properly.

All the hard work the team and we, the fans, have put in is summed up quite nicely under the title "Champions League Winners 2014".

I have never felt such anxiety like I did in those last 10 minutes, from Covic's "what the **** is he on to save that" save to the extra minute of nothing time added on.

At the full time whistle, hands with clenched fists went in the air, eyes closed, knees hit the ground and the tears rolled out.

If there's any better feeling in life, it better be better than this.

I think thats why I feel so drained today..the anxiety and knot in the stomach was intense..the full time whistle was a release of emotion I have not experienced..Sharing this journey  has been very special..

Paramatta parade at the very least I would think..leys to the city..

I know he is not the most popular player but Mark Bridge did a good job in this game. He covered so much ground and closed down so many of their attempts to get moving from defence. There is a reason Popa always picks him and rarely brings him off unless he's totally knackered. I think he picked Kubi to perform a similiar closing down role but he just doesn't have the same concentration Bridge does.

That and Hamill immediately going and giving Covic a hug.

I hope this spurs on players like Romeo, Adeleke and Nikita to want to fire for us in the A League season.

We are a long way down and need to start climbing that ladder before other teams get too much of a jump on us..

    (said after 4 rounds lol).

I've been reflecting on the obstacles we had to overcome in the ACL knock out phase.

    • We played Sanfrecce in Hiroshima only days after a gut wrenching GF loss, and without NTS.
    • NTS nursed a knee injury in the off season, and Spira had to undergo surgery.
    • We lost ten players after Sanfrecce, and only Saba, Hamill, and Bouzanis had joined in time for the tie against Guangzhou.
    • In the absence of an Asian player we played the knock out games with only three imports.
    • We played the quarter and semi finals in our off season.
    • Prior to the home game against Guangzhou, Hamill hadn't played any competitive football for two years.
    • When Mullen had to come off injured in the same game, 16 year young Daniel Alessi had to mark Elkeson.
    • Guangzhou took 'dirty tricks' to a new level.
    • Poljak recovers from chickenpox just in time to score in the semi final.
    • Santa popped his shoulder against Al-Hilal, and kept playing.
    • Al-Hilal at times comprehensively outplayed us.
    • We have no proper wing backs, and no decent RW.
    • We haven't scored an away field goal since the group phase.
    • Our only CAM worth mentioning is still finding his feet and played only sporadically.
    • Our main goal scorer was injured in the semis, and only came on as a sub in the final.

So how on Earth did we pull it off?

    • Guys like Cole and Golec stepped up. To an ESFC audience both must be unrecognizable.
    • Clean sheets, nine in all throughout the campaign.
    • Ante Covic.
    • Popa's coaching.
    • The penalty we had awarded in Sanfrecce. It could/should have been a free kick, but the ref saw a foul inside the box. Very lucky.
    • The two red carded Guangzhou players (both justified in my view), and Lippi's ban for the return leg.
    • We had a referee in the final who, after his own WC performance, was determined to not award any soft penalties. He denied both Al-Hilal and WSW a hand ball penalty each, and didn't budge when Al-Hilal players were trying to milk it against Golec and Covic. We were lucky. it was crucial.
    • But most importantly: "We have something that money can't buy, the desire to win, the resilience to play for each other and do anything they can to win. No money can buy that and that's what these players have in abundance." (Popa in the post match press conference)

Wishes do come true. Miracles do happen. This is Greece 2004 all over. No complaints from me.

    I liked BUT

We haven't scored an away field goal since the group phase

Hm. Maybe something got lost in translation. Let me try again.

We scored in both Hiroshima and Guangzhou from the spot, and didn't score at all in Seoul and Riyadh.

The last regular goal was scored by Santa in Ulsan, Round 5 of the Group Stage.
