  • 5-4 Extra Time Epic Sends WSW To Adelaide Grand Final

    mack

A ridiculous comeback from 3-0 down set up an extra time thriller that ended in a 5-4 win that sends the Western Sydney Wanderers to the grand final in Adelaide next week.

In what was the true last match for the Western Sydney Wanderers at Parramatta Stadium before it is rebuilt, the two sides delivered an epic match that could quite rightly be called the best A-League game ever, for a place in the Grand Final against Adelaide.

The visitor Roar took the lead after 15 minutes. A set piece saw Andreu judged to have handballed inside the box with the resultant penalty being taken by Dimitri Petratos. Petratos' powerful strike evaded Andrew Redmayne for a 0-1 scoreline.

The night went from bad to worse for Andreu, as he added an own goal to his penalty handball. After giving away the free kick in the first place, he failed to maintain an appropriate bodyshape in the 6 yard box as Coronoa whipped in a fast ball into the middle of the area. A desperate flick of his leg couldn't stop the ball rebounding off his back, giving Redmayne no chance at all.

The self-inflicted wounds came again to see Roar take a 3-0 lead. A long ball down the right flank found Brandon Borello, his first time cut-back found Jamie Maclaren. The gun striker turned and fired, an unfortunate deflection from Alberto Aguilar caused the ball to tumble past the outstretched arm of Redmayne.

Thankfully for the Wanderers they were the next to score. Jade North gave away a foul with a poor tackle on Brendon Santalab, just outside the D semi-circle and right in front. Romeo Castelen stepped up to take the free kick. Jamie Young made a complete mess of his wall, giving the Wanderers a straight shot at the goal. The bad placement was compounded by a terrible reaction to Castelen's shot. The winger fired straight at goal, the keeper had taken a step to his left before the ball had been struck, putting him off-balance as the shot whistled past at a thunderous pace.

5 minutes before half-time the Wanderers cut the Roar's lead down to 1 goal. Dimas Delgado spotted the Roar defence playing far too high up the park, and set Brendon Santalab a task with a neat ball over the top. Santalab burned James Donachie and his idiotic man-bun for pace, then turned Donachie around, fired at near post past Jamie Young to make the game 3-2.

Momentum stayed with the Wanderers in the second half, and it didn't take long for Castlen to secure his brace and put the Wanderers level with Brisbane. A set piece was cleared by Corono but only as far as Scott Jamieson. The fullback lofted the ball back into the penalty area where it was knocked down by Nikolai Topor-Stanley into the path of Mitch Nichols. The ball sat up reasonably well and he shot at goal, it was palmed away by Jamie Young but Mark Bridge pounced, his shot rebounding off Young only to fall right at the feet of Castelen who fired into the roof of the net to make the game 3-3.

Until this game no team had ever come from 3 goals behind to take the lead. On the hour mark Dimas fired a free kick into the penalty box, where Young elected to punch, it looped into the air. Thomas Broich & Romeo Castelen tangled as the ball came down, Broich apparently losing it in the air, allowing Castelen to strike a thunderbolt on the half-volley that blew past Jamie Young.

Brisbane, having to score to send the game into extra time, began to press higher and higher, and eventually that paid dividends. A counter-attack started by Hervas ended with Tommy Oar, who released Henrique, he attempted a shot only to screw it wide but perfectly into the path of Maclaren who had a tap-in from 6 yards out to bring the game level once again. Extra time inched closer and closer with neither team willing to lose in normal time.

The first half of extra time began with Wanderers dominating the play, with a handful of chances going begging from Bridge & Castelen among others before they finally took one in the 102nd minute. Shannon Cole's neat work in the middle found Mark Bridge who played a 1-2 with Dario Vidosic. A placed shot had Young diving to push the ball away, Bridge reacted first, he pounced on the loose ball and slammed the ball across the face of the goal, Vidosic's near post run was rewarded as the marquee attacker flicked over Young to make the score an incredible 5-4.

Brisbane were out on their feet, and even with the help of Queensland referee Peter Green on their side, weren't able to equalise again to take the game to penalties. The Wanderers triumphed after 120 minutes of scintillating football, and they will face Adelaide next Sunday in their 3rd attempt to win the A-League Championship.

Cole and Dario were fantastic when they came on.

Not sure what Dario needed to do to get a free kick from knob ref.. was getting molested up front.

Now that my flights, accom and tix are sorted, I've got some time to reflect on the game.

And for a "post season" game that a lot of people were a bit "meh" about, there was a s**t load of emotion spent by everyone tonight. :grouphug:

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

I guess when we open up the tickets to everyone, we clear out some of the 'Deadwood' members that purchase the season ticket, but don't come to the matches.

I know that we can't make every game in a season (I've released my seat a couple of times myself), and I understand that some people's circumstances can change a lot over a season. But missing Thousands of members?

I think quite a few of the missing thousands, buy memberships to guarantee seats at the Sydney Derby and the other popular fixtures, Victory etc. Some may be closet Smurf supporters.

******* amazing. Words cannot describe the roller-coaster of emotions from despair to hope to joy to anxiety... Never seen a football match like this before.

RBB was off tap. I can barely feel my arms from waving that flag around but it's worth it. Non stop support even when we were down by three goals. Truly a spectacular way to spend our final game at Pirtek!

**** me dead, 20,084 people - a Pirtek Stadium WSW record in the final game.

What a match. One of, if not the best match in A-League history. Go on and win the thing in Adelaide next weekend.

We will give it an almighty try mate.  Don't forget to keep us updated on the PAX either :)  BTW 20,043 on mine.

Wow. Mine was 17,172 at about 9pm. That's over 3000 in a couple of hours.

I hear you have the best seat in the house...  :good:

    PAX was 14,411 at 8:40pm, so that's practically 8,000 in 2 hours!!!

I pity anyone stuck in Bays 146-147 if they're not Wanderers Supporters. :)

Still buzzing.  My throat is killing me.  Small, very small price to pay for that result.  No hope of sleeping just yet.  I was in the Eastern stand with my wife & kids.  Sitting directly in front of me was a 14-15 y.o. lad with his older brother & his parents.  I was holding my 5 y.o., but we found ourselves involuntarily screaming "Yeeaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!" into the angry-looking face with joy written all over it of this 14 y.o. & grabbing each other by the shirt, & he with us, with each & every goal.  Priceless moments that can't be scripted.

On another sad note, WTF is wrong with people wanting to pick fights with their fellow fans, as occurred during extra time at the front of Bay 22? :nono:

At the most recent state election, I was one of those PITA booth volunteers that attempts to thrust my mob's paperwork into your hands.  But don't hold that against me!!  I also happened to be wearing my WSW membership cap that day.

In the late afternoon, there was a smartarse ESFC fan that saw my cap & campaign t-shirt, & yelled out "Two bad things!!" as he walked past me.  As he returned after he had cast his vote, I said to him "See you at the next derby."  His response?  "Only if you all haven't fallen off the bandwagon by then."  Typical, typical, typical ESFC fan...  Everything that needs to be said has been said already.  I regret not reminding him of the comparative membership numbers of our respective clubs.

On this, the 24th day of April in the year 2016, after the Western Sydney Wanderers have come back from 0-3 down at home to defeat the Brisbane Roar 5-4 & qualify for their 3rd GF in 4 years, I wish to belatedly respond to this ESFC bandwagon clown with this:

    :xnod:

In 2005, I watched Liverpool come back from 0-3 down against AC Milan to win the Champions League, & I was behind the goals when John Aloisi (ironically given tonight's proceedings) sent AUS to the 2006 World Cup.  But I will take the greatest pride in saying that my family & I stood among the more than 20,000 of our red & black brothers & sisters & shared in one of the greatest nights in Wanderers history that has eclipsed everything that has come before it, & that epitomises everything about what this club & its supporters are about.

Forever red & black. Forever Wanderers.

See you all in Adelaide next Sunday for the next epic chapter of the WSW FC.

    This.

His intricate passing with Fathead (IIRC) & Dario led to what was a truly tremendous goal regardless of the score line at the time.

I forgot how good the Author's feet were. Great to have him back on the pitch :good:

Just finished watching it. Take note of the boys going bonkers when we scored the equaliser - especially Dimas.

Also, if you pay special attention. You'll see FCB on screen at some point after the final whistle :ninja:

Just watched this bit of the replay. Can confirm: Cole -> Bridge -> Dario, shot saved -> Bridge crosses -> Dario scores.

Jamo wanted the give and go with the ball to Cole and was p**sed not to get it back. But don't take my word for it :)

Don't do it. Savour the memory of the emotion felt at the time of the match. Watching it over & over will only dilute that emotive memory.

I elaborate on it in my most recent article ;)

Sorry Alex I have to disagree, it's like lasagne is always better  the next day after the flavours have had time to infuse to create a special moment of a melting mouthwatering special mmmmmmmm.

The more I will watch it the more brilliance I will see from parts I missed the first time from being distracted by the yummy mummy in front of me.  :good:

So happy for Romeo.........that was his night

As for the plastic Roar supporters..........loved the 'who are ya' chant a few times. And of course the flare they lit, nothing mentioned in the media today

Still can't believe what happened  - at 3-0 I was mentally making plans for next Sunday involving not watching the GF. This club is unbelievable..........that is why we love the ride

Not just remarkable that the team came back from three down, and that Romeo scored three times - but the fact that none of his goals were a direct result of his speedy, disorientating runs. He finished like a true striker/poacher.

A fantastic way to finish at Pirtek - just wonder how many thousand will make their way to Adelaide... can it go anywhere close to matching the 10,000 who travelled to Brisbane? A tough ask, but the near impossible has already been achieved!

    • Word of warning. The last time Boro made the play offs they went on one hell of a run and locked down a place with like 3 or 4 games to go. They switched off and didn’t win any of the last 3 games, like lost 2 and drew 1, but meh..no big deal right…we held the same position in the top 6. But when the play offs swung around we were done over, easily. We lost the first leg even with home advantage and we never got back the form we had that flew us up the table and were turned over easily by a team that finished below us. Be careful….momentum is EVERYTHING.
