  • Bridge Gives Wanderers Four In A Row

    mack

A late Mark Bridge winner gave the Wanderers a deserved 2-1 win against Wellington tonight.

Western Sydney Wanderers continued their Spanish revolution with their fourth win on the trot, with marquee striker Federico Piovaccari scoring his second goal in as many games. 8 minutes in a Wanderers foul on the edge of the penalty area saw Michael McGlinchey take aim at Andrew Redmayne's goal. Stupidly for the Phoenix, with McGlinchey always going to shoot on goal, they sent forward both their central defenders, leaving them hopelessly outnumbered at the back.

When McGlinchey smashed his shot off the crossbar, it rebounded to the feet of Mitch Nichols, who aimed a ball forward for Dario Vidosic, the two covering Wellington defenders got involved in a horrible tangle and the ball rolled back to Nichols. The star attacking midfielder played a simple ball to Mark Bridge, with a two on the keeper situation Bridge held the ball long enough to draw the keeper, his lay off to Piovaccari gave him a tap-in to open the scoring.

15 minutes in and the Wanderers should have been two up. A corner for the Wanderers was played in towards the near post, Wellington cleared the ball into the path of Scott Jamieson, and the fullback fired a 25 yard rocket that whistled past Glen Moss, but referee Strebre Delovski inexplicably pulled the goal back for a Wellington foul, judging Piovaccari to have fouled the Wellington defence in the build up.

3 minutes later Wellington had their own illegitimate goal, only this time it was allowed by the referees. Maltese International Manny Muscat cut back onto his favoured right foot, fired across the keeper, through the legs of a team-mate and watched his shot fly past Redmayne. Replays showed McGlinchey was in an offside position and was positioned right in front of the goalkeeper, and should have seen the goal ruled out.

The second half built into the Wanderers favour as time ticked by, their momentum running towards a seemingly inevitable goal. It was Wanderers top goal scorer Mark Bridge who stepped up. A Wanderers corner flicked on at the near post, Bridge skipped past Roy Krishna, and with no Wellington player closing him down, took a touch to put the ball on his right foot to let him blast into the roof of the net from point blank range.

On another day the match would have ended 3-0, but in the end the Wanderers got the result they deserved, catapulting the Red & Black into 3rd position on the A-League Premiership ladder.

Excellent game. Wellington were good value - I thought a draw was bordering on fair, but of course I'm more than happy to take the 2-1 win. As always I feel conflicted when we owe a win to Bridge - I was moments away from crying out in frustration at his seeming reluctance to shoot, but then he came through and buried that last goal without any trouble. As always, Bridge is proving the haters wrong.

I know that it's a standard feature of the game, but I'm never a fan of players running down the clock when there's a reasonable chance of taking another goal. Jamieson pulling out of that late attack down the left was bordering on criminal!

    Where were you rwb?

Normally in 56 so it was interesting to hear from outside. Was paying attention. The ground channels the sound from end to end of course. Thought it sounded alright.

    Behind the Wanderers bench.

Things I learned sitting in the dugout:

    - every time Pio starts dropping deep to get the ball, Popa yells at him to get back high. I guess Pio's role is to be an out-and-out #9 target man

    - the back line still isn't pressing high fast enough for Popa. He was constantly yelling out the back line to push out

    - there were no prawn skewers. Mickisnot got my hopes up :-(

I can't wait for BJ to come back. I'd love to see him on the right in the place of Neville, who has the touch of a donkey.

And that first goal, how good is it to finally have a striker that knows where to be when a team mate is on the break? In seasons past, Bridgey would have had no choice but to try and squeeze a near post shot off, a poor percentage play. Instead he had Pio right there with him to give an easy option and a classy tap in. Lovely to watch.

I thought Jamieson was very controlled and calculated. It didn't feel like a time wasting thing but rather making the right pass/ move.

And what about Topor at the back. He was an absolutely rock, dominated the air and was composed on the ball.

If you have spent as much time as I have on this forum you'd know that Generator is a troll. Honestly, best to just ignore.

In fairness, I was in 54 and also thought we sounded pretty flat. The nonsense with the WST has definitely diluted the atmosphere and that's a real shame.

Damn. I'm sorry. The prawn skewers were good. But was there something else that was really good??

And be honest now, was that you and your lovely family being interviewed before the game?

Nah, that wasn't us. We were three rows in front of them. They were a very cute family though. My two boys are gingers. They were probably too afraid to put them up on the big screen in case they ate the souls of the whole stadium…

The food was hot chips and sausage rolls. Nothing flash, but it was free so I'm not going to complain. Anyway, the view from the dugout is immense. So good.

Agree that the wst thing isn't helping - I don't understand why they can't participate in all the chants that don't refer to the rbb?

It's not just that though - 55 has a lot of passengers at the moment. Lots of chatting, arms folded, on phone etc. Why ******* buy an active membership if that is what you are going to do?

Game was brilliant and we are emerging as a legit title threat. It will be a very long time before we have another player who has scored as many crucial goals as bridge.

Glad to read that many have not responded to another win with a sack Popa and Pio chorus. Bridge was a Beast. Jamieson is a Bulut. Topor is a freelance striker. Why would you need police in the RBB when the club cops/marshalls are enforcing all the non movement laws the police tried to bring in at season commencement. Thanks Club. Thanks also for keeping us safe and watching us at The Collector and thanks for id checking and photographing everyone that walked into the pub. No really thanks Club for doing the polices' work for them. Thanks are toward you if we in the RBB tonight sounded like eunuchs. Come back WST. Bay 56 filled with 15 year olds doesn't cut it.

Thanks marron for the Bay56 ticket for my mate. Put to good use.

Once again I noticed practically no police in the RBB and guess what, there wasn't an issue...

    Well in.

Might have had something to do with having 2 Senators in the RBB for the match to witness it first hand.

    David Leyonhjelm and Sam Dastyari.

As for the atmosphere, yeah the RBB was flat until the last 10 minutes - it seems to be Bay56 putting in and 57/58 from where I stood were just standing there.

No we weren't outsung by the Phoenix fans, the smurf idiot who posted that on Twitter is a fool.

There was a period of time (about a minute) in the second half where, yes, the 20 odd Nix supporters were out singing the RBB. I was sitting behind the WSW bench and they were easily more clearer to hear.

Have Wanderers fans slipped into mediocrity?

Note the third person use of 'Wanderers fans' ...

Given the amount of RBB tickets traded/sold in the WSW Spare Tickets Facebook group every single week, I'd say most of the passengers are just blow-ins looking to tick RBB attendance off their bucket list. I would love to see the stats on the number of RBB tickets transferred each week. It would be interesting to see what proportion of "active support" is people who have a membership just so they can on-sell tickets.

    Pio was a monster tonight.

Great game, really was questioning jamiesons disallowed goal, then realised it went back to Pios scissor that seemed like sfa. Anyway, we won. Excellent game by bridgey and most.

Noticed a fair few of our passes were missing the mark, a lot of balls going to areas that the player had been in or into an area the receiving player wasnt moving towards.

Btw, what happened with Phoenix's #18 who went down and limped off with the medicos?

I was worried about him. What was it?

Watching them thrash Souths 30-0 in the last home game of the season will be enough to get me through the summer.

I'm still waiting for a positive A-league contribution from you, or for ypu to express any disappointment if something isn't going well. I'm sure you'll be very active on this forum the next time there is an ordinary crowd, and nowhere to be seen when there is a good one.
