  • Bulut Brace Can't Prevent Derby Loss

    mack

Sydney FC raced out to a 3-0 lead before the Wanderers fought back to level pegging, only to see Terry Antonis win an epic derby 4-3 with his late goal.

Just 10 minutes into the 9th Sydney Derby, the visitors had the lead via the head of Wanderers keeper Ante Covic. Milos Dimitrijevic whipped in a corner to the near post that had Nikolai Topor-Stanley & Covic scrambling, the ball bouncing up into the crossbar then unluckily off the head of Covic for an own goal.

It went from bad to worse as Sydney FC doubled their advantage only 8 minutes later. Bernie Ibini & Chris Naumoff combined to produce a shot on goal, and in another unlucky bounce, it fell to the advantage of Janko who smartly tapped the ball into the back of the net.

With barely a quarter of the game played the visiting side were up three goals as Janko popped up for his brace. Seb Ryall smashed a long ball up the park. With Janko & Brendan Hamill coming together without a conclusive winner the ball fell loose to the turf. Hamill had lost sight while Janko was Johnnie on the spot with a clinical finish.

It could have been four not long after if it wasn't for a misfiring Naumoff, with an open goal begging as Covic continued his horror night by being rounded by Alex Brosque, the young forward blasted wide.

With a half-hour of frenetic football done, the Wanderers found a lifeline into the match through Iacopo La Rocca. Yojiro Takahagi swung in a free kick to the far post, finding Hamill or nodded back down, La Rocca reacting first to scoop the ball into the roof of the net.

Prior the break the fifth goal of the half was scored by Kerem Bulut. The Western Sydney lad scoring on his debut after Takahagi released Nikita Rukavystsya, his first time cross inches away from the diving Vedran Janjetovic and leaving Bulut with a tap-in from point blank range that he couldn't miss.

As the game swung into gear in the second half the Wanderers completed their comeback by drawing level as that man Bulut drilled a rocket of a strike into the bottom corner from outside the penalty area. He stole Labinot Haliti's gimmick by removing his shirt and celebrating with the RBB.

Graham Arnold responded with a raft of substitutions and the final one proved the difference with 15 minutes to go. After having done all the hard work in getting back on level terms, it was Hamill who completed his awful night by effectively passing it straight to Antonis, his first touch took him past the scrambling defence and his second was a shot across the keeper.

Despite a later red card to Mickael Tavares for two bookable offences, the Wanderers weren't able to produce another equaliser, and are now 3 points behind 9th place Newcastle and rapidly approaching the point where there is no mathematical chance of making the top 6.

The Wanderers next match is against Guangzhou Evergrande in the Asian Champions League group stage, on Wednesday the 4th of March.

Cove did sound loud tonight. My seats are Bay 43 so I'm obviously closer to them, but you also have to remember that they have a roof over them and the echo boosts the volume and directs the sound out towards the field. RBB would be much louder if the North Terrace had a roof as well…

It's easy to sing loud when you do it for a few minutes then have 10 minutes of playing statues. I was in bay 49 (so closer to the RBB than the cove) and the only times I heard them was after they scored and as the RBB was switching chants.

In 43 I heard them most of the night, and often louder than the RBB (their sound is basically projected directly at me so this is no surprise - same goes when Victory travel here). They may have been standing still, but they weren't ever silent for long.

Glad I sit where I do then so I cannot  hear or see the feckers.

Correct me if I'm wrong but did we just play with TWO attacking midfielders and ONE defensive midfielder? If so, good to see some unpredictability from a tactical point of view.

We were defensively all out at sea early on in the game. Spira was definitely missed and we could have gone 4-0 down very early on. Hamill was a bit off today. Hopefully that's just a one off.

Juric has had better days. A talent for sure, who seems to be out of form and not communicating well with the other players. Maybe a bit of a competition was what he needed. That competition has now arrived.

Again, a lot of positives but not the result we wanted.

    But I don't get that,

Unless he already has a bounty of offers from europe that his agent isn't telling the media

Or he is relying on another big offer from China to come as a safeguard incase Europe doesn't come through with the cash.

he has to show scouts around the world that he can be a 20 goal a season striker,

and there is only one way by doing that and that is by scoring goals

Just got back from the derby - my first on the red and black side.

Brilliant game to be a part of.

    - RBB non stop even when 3-0 down.

    - Players asleep but then coming back to and rallying when they could have easily dropped their heads and conceded another 32

    - Fans being the extra player on the pitch to help them get there(for the most part anyway)

Gotta give credit it to the cove for volume, loud at times but not sure if that was more a result of the changing of songs, the rbbs selection of lower pitched songs or the fact that they had just scored.

    Overall, WOW.

Oh and thanks West13 for the extra pair of tickets. Dad and mate had an absolute blast!

Thanks for the clarification. Takahagi has looked better and better with every game. I guess quite normal for a player who just came in straight from holidays and into the team without any 'preseason'.

Also how ironic is it that when our attacking third clicked, our defence didn't. Sigh.

last 20 im pretty sure Romeo was playing at attacking midfield as well thats what looked like this, I'm enjoying seeing Romeo roam around off his wing and really adds something that needs finishing.

Gotta say at the 20-odd minute mark there was part of me that ready to pull the eject cord, but can never ever ever do that and sink to a ESFC standard of behaviour.

I wish we had all the run of play turn into goals, and conversely the smurf basterds didn't seem to get the rub of the green with almost every chance. But that's football. Sometime's it's heaven on a stick, sometimes its chili.

What I really want to take out of the match is pride and belief, passion and hope for the future. I'm not 100% on the way there yet, but with Romeo, Takahagi, Bulut, Iaccopo and Tanaka there were inklings. We definitely need some of the older guys to rise (I thought Ante was just a tiny bit off, and no need to talk about Golec, Hamill and Bridgey who were flat).

Let's play out the rest of this season making everyone we meet know we aren't gonna roll over, and in the interim do some serious damage in the ACL. And hopefully even now all those in a position of power and finance are plotting what to do for 2015/16.

Highlight of the season - flare smoke blinds Janjetovic to seal thE comeback. He ticks it boots ball into the stands and then runs to sook to the ref. Priceless. What a ****wit!

I will forever hate antonis now for denying the world what would have been the most blubbering whinging arnie press conference of all time. 'but but but the flares'

Sad result. I agree with all the positives member have borne out - especially Bulut (throat still sore)

The fans really deserved to leave tonight with a better taste in their mouths. After the season we've had. Constantly on the cusp of something resembling a strong team. Might be harder than just being shite every week.

So in a season of potential never realised it was just a sad result for a supremely loyal fan base.

PS my kids loved it, tearing paper into plastic cups when we're 3 goals down so they could celebrate our impending goal. They did this meticulously after every one of our comeback goals. I copped the shower of loaded paper at full time. They were optimistic until the end.

Bays 55 and 54 were pretty pathetic tonight. Vast majority of people werent participating in singing or clapping.

For ****s sake. Go sit in the stands if you want to be quiet and watch. Its more disappointing than the actual loss. We are the twelth man, so lets start acting like it

Next game ill take photos of those people so we can try to name and shame.

I sit at the back end of 23/24 on the east stand and I could only hear the cove when the rbb were changing tunes. Maybe if you face them you can hear them better but the fact they were winning most of the game, it's not really an achievement that they were singing.

I hear and agree with everything that has been said here tonight, our mids/fwds had a solid game, Bulut exceptional, had great periods in the game playing the best we have all season, covic shocker, back four shocker, great fight/spirit shown by the boys, rbb great, tifo great, most of the boys might have been tired from acl Wednesday & trip back via Cairns and overall you can't help but say how synonymous with how our season has gone. We deserved more out of that game just like on many occasions this season.

The area that has been glossed over has been our frailty in defense this season which appears at odds to how S1, S2 & our ACL campaign was seemingly built on being tight at the back. How we held on to the ball for most of the first 20 minutes yet, three ESFC attacks led to 3 scrappy goals when they had another two chances, so it could have been much worse. As if it couldn't be any worse, the only decent shot & goal for ESFC in the second half came from another defensive mistake. I'm really starting to lose patience with these average moments we've had in the backs, when it happens once you can understand but this is becoming a regular occurrence every week. We really need to stop shipping goals by making silly defensive mistakes which has cost us games and points all season. So unbelievably frustrating.

    Hamil - Total disaster

NTS - Wasn't his best game but had holes all around him

Golec - I think we are being unfair on him after he played 90 minutes on Wednesday in a position that involves lots of running. Also tonight he was a lot more disciplined making professional fouls than in previous weeks which really irked me in the past month. Seeing as Popa believes so strongly in the rotation system, I found it hard to believe that he wasn't given a rest tonight but shows how desperate he is for wins that he felt like he needed to play him.

Covic - horror first half, it just seemed that own goal/failed punch just sucked all the confidence out of him. Second half his only work with the gloves was picking the ball out of the back of the net

Yuseke - Doesn't deserve to be mentioned with this lot, in the last 5 he had nothing left in the tank.

Le Covè were their usual self.

In Bay 65 you could hear them but it was "Sydney FC clap clap clap" or some other nursery rhyme garbage. It's the same crap they've been dishing out for the last three seasons.

It's good to see RBB members be critical of themselves. I'm not going to lie, you're being way to harsh on yourselves. The passion is/was electric and unrelenting. I'm fairly sure Janjetovic gets so angry at the RBB because he actually wishes his fans could be that passionate. That's why he tries so hard. He's a sad sod, he'll never get the attention he wants from his fans so he goes off and gets attention other ways lol

The seasons been disjointed and it's hard to focus week-in-week-out as a fan, there are other chants I know of and revised but haven't got a run. I can imagine the nature of this season has taken a tole on the fans as well as the creativity and flare (intention pun)

I'll tell you steaight the passion and ethic is still there, I think the team and club need that off-season we've all been waiting for. I'm not footballed out, I never am, but it's natural to demand time away from something you love.

at the end of the game, at the back of Bay 57, there was one complete dickhead in a blue Manchester United jersey that tosses a coke bottle a couple of rows in front of us at the back of fellow RBB supporters.

Mate, what the freaking hell was going on there? Did anyone else see this??

    What a complete idiot...

I actually saw the exact same thing happen in 55. I was in the back of 56 and saw someone throw a bottle after we conceded the fourth (I think) and it hit people at the bottom of the bay. What the hell is wrong with some people?

We need to be critical of ourselves. We can't progress until we identify what is bringing us down. We're miles ahead of the cove or anyone else in the league, but that shouldn't stop us from improving even further. We have a terrible problem with people that are not active enough, don't jump and just generally miss the spark that you need to go mental. I'm satisfied with how we are, but I won't say I'm happy until I see the whole place rocking at times when the boys are not playing well.

It's obviously easier to sing when you're winning, but we need to push ourselves and do the same when we're not. And stop with the bottle throwing, were not achieving anything with that.

All of those goals are cleared and nullified by spiranovic or a quality defender....the clearance that bobbled to antonis reminded me of a junior park league match were the ball is hacked at by kids and it falls to the opposition and the other kid who can shoot tucks it away. Hammill had a night to forget. But he must have been in another world last night, compare those efforts to his 1 on 1 tackle against berisha earlier in the season where he prevented a goal in a1v1 crucial tackle.

    • I'll preface this by saying everyone is always welcome here, but to be honest you've been pretty sharp with people in here too. Even going to far as to accuse a certain poster of spreading silly 3rd hand rumours. That same individual was someone who previously regularly had the CEO of the club over to their house for dinner, a pretty well informed person.  This is off season on the WSW forum. Specifically the squad development thread turns into a complete crap shoot for 5 months. Absolutely nothing is achieved and we refuse to be serious. I encourage you to join in the stupidity and not resist it. It's an excellent way to pass one of the worlds longest off seasons
