  • Wanderers Dumped From Finals In Week One

The second elimination final of the A-League finals series took place in Parramatta with Melbourne Victory booking their spot in the two legged semi-final against Premiership winners Auckland FC, following their comfortable 2-1 win against an atrocious low energy Wanderers rabble, Victory scoring through Kasey Bos & Zinedine Machach either side of Zac Sapsford and his only goal of the game for the home team.

Both teams were unchanged from their results in the final week of the regular season, Western Sydney securing their home final with a 3-1 win over Macarthur, Victory with a 1-1 draw against Newcastle that ultimately didn't matter with their 5th place finish. Alex Bonetig had come off early in the final round but he was in his normal central defensive position. Victory were missing Mitch Langerak in goals due to his ongoing foot injury, Alex Badolato ineligible to play due to his status as a Victory loan player from WSW. Both teams had serious firepower off the bench, the visitors had Bruno Fornaroli and the home team Marcus Antonsson and Juan Mata.

Melbourne Victory had the best chance of the opening stages, with Nishan Velupillay beating Gabriel Cleur for pace and his cutback was met by Zinedine Machach only for the fullback from the other side, Alex Gersbach swooped in with a key block. The Wanderers countered lightning quick to turn the Victory around and causing 20 year old defender Joshua Inserra to drag the attacker down on halfway and copped a clear yellow card.

The Wanderers didn't heed the warning of the opening minutes and paid the price. Victory fullback Kasey Bos took advantage of Cleur getting caught ballwatching & drifting well inside, Daniel Arzani found him with a simple ball and the fullbacks second touch was a shot that Thomas got a hand to but couldn't stop from falling past him into the back of the net to make it 1-0 after 7 minutes.

It was a simple combination from Borrello and Sapsford that drew the teams level. Borrello received the ball facing toward goal right in front, he took a stutter step to deceive and distract the defence from the run of Sapsford on his right, played the ball in neatly with the space given and Sapsford blasted it past Jack Duncan with the help of a deflection.

Alex Gersbach had a double chance on the 37th, the ball fell into an acre of space inside the Victory area and he sprinted on and Ryan Teague came across at just the right time to block it out for a corner that Anthony Pantazopoulos rose highest at the back stick but couldn't get on target.

Machach retained the lead for the Victory with 4 minutes left in the first half. Arzani started the move on the left wing, beating a pair of challenges from Nicolas Milanovic and then Cleur, cutting back from the byline, Kraev did enough to prevent an initial strike but no-one in red & black was in position to stop Machach's instinctive side foot effort that navigated through a sea of legs and past Thomas who was still on the turf having dived prematurely moments earlier. The half-time 2-1 lead was a deserved one for Victory having punished Cleur for his weak tackling and poor positional play.

There was little reaction after the break, Victory continued with their superior ball & player movement and threw in a pitch of classic time wasting whenever a foul went their way the player would take a seat and be allowed to receive treatment instead of having to leave the field or get up and play on. With 18 to go in regulation Alen Stajcic went for a triple change with Antonsson, Mata & Jarrod Carluccio on for some much needed energy & technical quality. Josh Brillante, Sapsford & Cleur made way. Seconds later Velupillay almost added a 3rd with an ambitious turning volley that flashed past the far post.

Borrello won a free kick not far out from goal in the 74th minute, Duncan set his wall while Milanovic & Mata stood over the ball. Milanovic looked more likely to shoot and he tried the Ronaldo style dipper but it hit the wall and the rebound went to Mata who dinked it back into mixer only to find that no-one had managed to retreat enough to make a second run. Josh Rawlins came in for the final 10 in place of the carded Inserra.

Mata had spent half the season looking for his second A-League goal and it seemed to have arrived on a silver platter when Gersbach took advantage of a cramp to Arzani who went down in the box instead of defending, and expected Gersbach to play the ball out. Instead Gersbach played it across the 18 yard box and with the whole of the stadium expecting him to bulge the old onion bag he blazed it over the bar like it was a Pantazopoulos goal kick. Arzani made way for Santos Rodrigues as a result of the cramp, followed by Fornaroli & Jing Reec on for Velupillay & Machach and the Wanderers final throw of the dice Aydan Hammond for Milanovic who had tried hard but failed to have any significant impact.

There was precious little attacking thrust in the final seconds, the Wanderers starters were out on their feet and all they could muster was a quarter-chance where the two central defenders combined for Pantazopoulos to head it well wide. One final opportunity to spring forward came with Mata & Priestman but summed up the game when Priestman managed to send a 3 meter pass over the sideline instead of forward to enable an attack.

It was an insipid, limp, dismally poor second half, there was maybe two good chances in the entire 50 minutes played and none of the subs made any impact whatsoever. Mata finally had his chance to display his quality and drag his team back level but instead he turned into an AFL player and put his shot up and over the goals so much it might have hit passing traffic on the O'Connell Street bridge.  This season was yet another that began poorly and was only rescued by a late charge, but just like in 2022/23 the first finals game proved too much of a hurdle to jump, leaving the fans frustrated yet again with a wasted season. The Wanderers now have to rebuild for a likely October kickoff for 2025/26 under the auspices of a new salary cap direction, without Milanovic and a raft of players coming off contract including Mata, Sapsford, Cleur, Antonsson and Clisby.

The remainder of the finals series will be Auckland FC vs Melbourne Victory & Western United vs Melbourne City in a two legged Semi-Final followed by the A-League Grand Final to be played on Saturday 31st of May or Sunday 1st of June.

Was hoping to not watch another football match that was basically an allegory of my love life but alas :(

It's not the same. Players actually scored tonight.

Milanovic went missing in the first half. Couldn’t even tell he was on. More involved in the second but tried doing too much himself (as is usual).

Carluccio, how the guy is a professional, no idea. Shithouse.

A player of Mata’s pedigree, you expect them to come on and make a difference, be the difference. He didn’t, and he never did all season.

Season done. I’m sort of glad, I can now put my focus on other hobbies, like waiting for @Unlimited tell us a success story

Tactically we let MV dictate the pace of the game...which was slow..very slow. They learned something from a month ago, we didn't.

MV executed their plan and we walked right into it. Out played, out thought and out managed.

Just terrible shooting, sure defence was terrible at first but we should have recovered

    The Kersey Curse strikes again.

Disappointed with how the season ends.

We were not the better side tonight.

If I want a side to win it then it's Victory. I'd hate Auckland/WU/Melb C to win it.

Oh well, it was not to be. Its gutting that we couldn't go the full distance (11 games unbeaten!) because I felt we could beat any of these team on the night. But alas not tonight. We weren't awful, but they were better.

I love what Borello has done for the club but sadly I feel he's more of a liability than an advantage these days. He either can't receive the ball without losing it or gets the ball and fluffs the pass. IDK he's just not working for me.

I think think Staj has done enough to have another season

Staj will get another go based on finishing 4th, but I will stick to my guns that he ain’t a winner. Doesn’t know how to get a team over the line. Tonight was just horrid. Flat as a pancake on the field and weirdly, flat as a pancake off it too.

My 2 concerns were realised tonight:

    1) Our form/playing style relies heavily on an open, end to end game that encourages counter attacking football. We have struggled in grinds and did again tonight which was always coming in the finals

    2) Teams that go on long winning/unbeaten streaks always come crashing back down to earth when it finally ends, often at the worst times. Tonight speaks for itself.

It’s still a successful season and one I’ve enjoyed immensely. The failure will be if we don’t build upon it and regress next season. The platforms there now.

Much  as I dislike his cheating diving play. I thought Arzani man of the match tonight. He was unstoppable..

    Out coached and outplayed...

    Tepid performance .

Onwards and upwards for next season.

    Righto.

Time to get on transfermarkt and have a look at some free agents or players with their contracts ending in a few weeks time. Mention ones I think that should be signed to the club but we all know that it won't happen at all anyway...and then wait for Unlimited to mention their FIFA overall rating (if they have one)

Meanwhile, slap an extension for Staj for either a year or two and then the club will eventually announce it. While we get excited for that, we immediately get sad when we hear some certain players are departing from the club with Milanovic probably 99.99% leaving alongside the likes of Pelekanos, Temelkovski, Brillante, Antonsson, Mata, Jeong, and probably a few others where it's basically a mass exodus.

Then, we'll get ready to play a weak team where Staj will have to rely on using a handful Academy players for the Australia Cup despite that the club should be taking it seriously as it's now an opportunity for the club to ever have a chance to play in Asia.

Then, the club will FINALLY announce some new players so we'll get a little excited again, we all say we look forward to the upcoming season and say the team looks like they'll finish in the top 6.

After that, the A-League men's 2025-26 season will be announced we'll look for it to it and most like we'll see the club has a f*cking round 1 Sydney Derby which will immediately ruin the excitement. Plus, they'll also announce that the club will have to play against Macarthur FC on the 1st January 2026 yet again like they ALWAYS DO!.

Then, the 2025-26 season kicks off and it'll take the squad around 7 rounds to get adjusted so they'll probably bag 5 losses by then and sitting outside the top 6.  THEN, Staj and the squad pull their finger out, grab a few wins or they'll most likely have some draws cause they'll most likely get ****ed over by either a referee or VAR. THEN, they will eventually make the finals again and leading up to that, either one or two of our best players are rumoured to head to Europe so they tend to play slightly worse

and to top it off...the squad be gone out of the first week in finals again...

OK! SORTED, SEE YOU IN OCTOBER! :good:

Im not 100% convinced this is all staj. Pelekanos and Carluccio coming back in the same season points to a larger picture for me. My assumption here is the club wanted academy greads back in the team. This is obviously not a good a strategy but the club seems to want to back its own production line. I dont agree with the concept but thats what it looks like to me

As far as the game goes, nothing can really be said. We sucked, victory didnt and so all that work and hype is for nought.

I guess we wait to see what Staj delivers in the off season if the club decides to extend him

He was, but fmd Cleur was absolutely terrible. Just so so poor in attack and defence. Amazed he was left on as long as was.

i would be less of a grumpy ****er tonight if I felt we had a real go..but I don’t feel we did. Sitting there and watching and knowing that tactically they have your number, that their game plan is working a treat and NOTHING changes, even with the subs…

People are more accepting of what they see than me…which is fair enough, we all have our own opinions here.

    I will feel better tomorrow.

So much for super-coach Staj. We looked clueless and gutless out there tonight. Outplayed and outfought and Staj had no reaction. Beaten by an academy coach.

And for all the Staj fans out there how is this for synchronicity. This season we end up exactly where we did in Rude boy’s first full season: finished fourth and then shat the bed in a home elimination final (same score too).

We all know how Rude’s second full season went. So sure give Staj another two years and see how that is going work. We are never going to win anything with a coach who has not won anything.

Couldn’t agree more. He was horrid tonight. Dropping way too deep, and then he isn’t where the players need him to be positionally when we attack. So many attempts at turning the opposition player but losing the ball due to a terrible touch. It worked once and we got a foul, but otherwise he was crap. We need better

I thought there game really hung on two Arzani moments that were two goals. Neither keeper really had much to do. It was a slow and rough Slog for much of the game. It died them and we couldn't change things enough to get on top. They also had far more experience on the pitch and I think it showed at the vital time. Arzani was the difference.  We restricted Velupilay but didn't contain Arzani unfortunately.

I'm hoping that we can build on this season. The last half has been very enjoyable and much better than I expected at Christmas. Staj, the players and others have brought something back to WSW and we need to build on it.

I was very disappointed in the away fans - not many at all. Quite pathetic - reckon we had more in NZ for ordinary season games.

be like me and give yourself a bit of space between tonight game and thoughts about Staj. If you still feel the same in the morning fair enough.
