  • Wanderers Gift Derby To Sydney FC

    mack

The worst on field 2nd half performance in the history of the young club saw the Western Sydney Wanderers hand Sydney FC their first home derby win by 3 goals to 1, all three for Sydney coming as a result of errors from the team from the West.

The Wanderers came into the match knowing they were let to lose, or even concede a goal at the Sydney Football Stadium in the derby. The first half proved typical derby fare, with neither side making an impact on the scoreboard as precious few chances appeared.

The game sprung into life early in the second half however. In the 48th minute a cross into the centre by Adam D'Apuzzo bounced off Brendon Santalab. The ball fell to the benefit of Shinji Ono, the Japanese international threw threw his right boot sideways to smash home from 6 yards out.

Mere minutes later it looked like the Wanderers would double their lead. A cross from the left flank by Bridge floated toward the back post, and Richard Garcia managed to drag down both Santalab and Youssouf Hersi as they attempted to attack the cross.

Even though normal #1 penalty taker Shinji Ono was on the field, it was Mark Bridge who took on the responsibility of the penalty. Janjetovic made a show of pointing to his left, and that was where Bridge hit is penalty, straight into the arms of Janjetovic. The miss was the clear turning point for the match and a Sydney FC comeback was inevitable.

On the hour mark it was the unusual source of Matt Jurman who levelled the game. Polenz had knocked down Garcia, giving Petkovic the chance to launch a ball into the mixer from deep on the Sydney FC left flank. Ante Covic came flying out of his goalmouth to punch, the ball sliced into the unknowing Jurman who collected his first ever A-League goal without trying.

In the 64th minute the entire stadium drew breath as Youssouf Hersi attempted an audacious long range effort. Hersi guided the ball toward the top right corner only for the flying Janjetovic to block the shot out for a corner. The resulting corner was hit long to Polenz who smashed a volley well wide.

New signing Golgol Mebrahtu was given his Western Sydney debut in place of Shinji Ono but suffered a disaster as he was injured seconds after entering play. Mebrahtu was then replaced by Labinot Haliti, and early reports are that the Mebrahtu injury is an anterior cruciate ligament injury that could see him out of action for potentially a year.

The evening turned into a nightmare for Western Sydney as Sydney FC took the lead as a result of one of the worst individual mistakes in the history of the A-League. Captain Michael Beauchamp received a short free kick from Ante Covic, and under no pressure decided to try to pass the ball back to the keeper. The pass was woeful, rolling 4 yards straight into the path of Garcia, who gleefully tapped into the open net as Covic dived desperately to block the shot even as he was out of the penalty area.

During stoppage time Jerome Polenz made the 4th major error of the night. The referee missed a blatant handball from a Sydney FC player and Polenz looked to catch the ball to play on from an expected foul only for referee Kris Griffiths-Jones to awarding a penalty against Polenz. Ali Abbas stepped up to fire home in front of the home support, Sydney FC winning their first Derby at home by three goals to one.

The Wanderers are making a habit of mistakes in recent weeks and it has cost the side any chance of retaining the Premiership, and may cost the club their Asian Champions League place if Adelaide continue to rise. In 2014 the Wanderers record stands at 6 losses, 2 draws and 3 wins, a stat that will not please manager Tony Popovic one bit.

The left side combination of Bridge and D'Apuzzo was toothless, their only bright notes being the aimless crosses from deep that lead to the lucky deflection to Ono for the first goal, and the penalty won that any competent defender would not have allowed themselves to give away. Their failure was compounded by Bridge missing a penalty. The likes of Haliti, Cole, Heffernan and Appiah will push for selection in the midweek ACL clash and our next A-League match against Adelaide.

The Wanderers next match is against Guizhou Renhe in the Asian Champions League group stage, in China on the 12th of March 2014.

yeah re the above the problem with people 'wanting their seats' is still present. I was between halfway and the back on Bay 4 and saw 3 conversations take place, and one situation where Police removed people from so others could sit there. FFS ignorance of people. You see an army of black and red - sit  stand where you can and sing ur guts out.

New to the forum and have to start by saying I have been a reader for some time and think Pryzdopolis makes some brilliant balanced comments - big fan of that. I decided to join after reading some of the comments around Beauchamp of whom I'm a fan. Yes he made one bad mistake last night and after the game on the fox sports interview he owned it like a man twice and took full responsibility. Some people have been writing on Facebook wanderers page that he should be euthanised / killed which is disgraceful. Give the guy some credit - he lost his place as captain of the club during the midst of career best form and on the back of selection in the all stars game. Not only has he sucked it up, he has not once complained or whinged about it unlike what we saw from Jacob burns at Perth. He has also had periods of a month without game time and then gets thrown in to the heat of a big derby and has an excellent strong game bar one regrettable and terrible bad pass. The defence has been in my opinion destabilised by the chopping and changing but as a fan of the team I hope the guys pull together and make a charge for the title again. Cheers.

Welcome to the forum Footballing, yep I agree Beauchamp has been solid for most of his career, his first season with the Wanderers was brilliant and one of the reasons we won the League.

people are angry with how we lost to our rivals and Beauchamp at the moment seems to be the sacrificial lamb.

I actually think that mistake aside the skipper was immense!!

Totally agree mate - he sure knows how to deal out a meaty challenge or ten ( all ball of course) haha

Thanks mate and lucky he has broad shoulders. Spiranovic has signalled his intent to go overseas after the next world cup so hopefully the captain gets another contract next year given he is a western Sydney boy - born and bred

A few significant points from last night's game:

    1. The atmosphere was terrific and a great credit to all supporting both teams - achieved without flares and from what I could ascertain, any trouble

    2. What happened to Golgol was a tragedy - a shocking piece of bad luck and timing

    3. There is no excuse for racial abuse - and I find sledging of any kind pathetic - leave it to the Australian cricket team. Use football ability alone to undermine the opposition.

    4. It has been some time since we have seen our team play with the fluidity, dynamism and effectiveness of last season

    5. Syd FC have been searching (and spending) long and hard for the key to consistency and defensive stability. In Ogdenovski they appear to have found a locksmith.

    6. This, particularly in the second half was an epic and dramatic saga that will only add to the anticipation and demand for future derbies - that might come sooner than we think (i.e. Finals)

We were fortunate and blessed to have the season we had in our first year. However, supporters of most teams do not experience such things and can be thankful we have. Being a football fan is often about frustration and selection and tactical disagreement. What we are experiencing now is part of the standard journey that will make the good times - whenever they next arrive - all the more enjoyable. Win or lose we are still part of Australian football's best supporter group. Points last night would have been great, but in the end I was proud of my fellow supporters in red and black - and if I had to choose between the two, I would not want it any other way!

That is really nice of the bay49 guys.

I just wish that they would sing (even clapping would have been great effort) and get off their ******* phones! One guy, out of 10 plus, was singing and the rest were pathetic. I'd yell at them too sing, they would just ******* smile. Even going 1-0 up wasn't enough inspiration for them to sing.

No doubt something happened, exactly what we shall see. As you have seen, 99.9% on here say if he has been racially abused then whoever did it needs to suffer consequences.

The above sentiment is more about the media focusing completely on that and zero on game however will say its no surprise. Have often don't same in other sports when **** like that happened.

Either way, no place for it in society.

I would hope that this incident get looks at as well, glad hersi didn't go down like a sack of potatoes after something that would have to be described as "attempted punch" or "love tap"

    image-6.jpgimage-7.jpg

Sorry for the poor quality, my thoughts on it

    - Abbas made a direct line for la Rocca (as mentioned by rudan went to the line of the player and not the line of the ball)

    - He went looking for something and his reaction afterwards was telling (contact was on neck/upper chest but then he holds the top of his head)

    - On the actual contact, la Rocca turned around to defend himself as anyone would have done so if someone is running at you. He raised hs arm to protect him and struck him with his mid forearm which I thought was reasonable.

I don't buy the whole storytelling on how i have been supporting my team and continue to do so..I find its a waste of breath trying to tell trolls he is wrong.

2nd goal was clearly both keeper and skipper fault. can't put blame on a single person.

Our attacking again need more edge if we are looking for title contender and successful ACL campaign.

More I look at ESFC.. maybe Man City brought the wrong team.

I thought I saw Abbas elbow Hersi as well in first half, he was a bit of a grub last night and certainly got under our players skin. Was a very physical game and we might struggle on Wednesday, Popa gonna have to make changes and play for a draw

True, but don't forget it's a derby, form goes out the window and the game is played on the back of the passion of the supporters in the stadium. All the little niggles, handbags, tirades and wind ups just play in the favor of leveling the playing field. That's just the way it goes but it doesn't make it any less disappointing!

No excuse for racial abuse especially in a professional environment, but Abbas was carrying on like a little cry baby. FFS just address the issue in a professional manner, if it is true. He did not act professionally at all and to be honest came across as a foolish over dramatic over sensitive little girl.
