  • Wanderers Gift Derby To Sydney FC

    mack

The worst on field 2nd half performance in the history of the young club saw the Western Sydney Wanderers hand Sydney FC their first home derby win by 3 goals to 1, all three for Sydney coming as a result of errors from the team from the West.

The Wanderers came into the match knowing they were let to lose, or even concede a goal at the Sydney Football Stadium in the derby. The first half proved typical derby fare, with neither side making an impact on the scoreboard as precious few chances appeared.

The game sprung into life early in the second half however. In the 48th minute a cross into the centre by Adam D'Apuzzo bounced off Brendon Santalab. The ball fell to the benefit of Shinji Ono, the Japanese international threw threw his right boot sideways to smash home from 6 yards out.

Mere minutes later it looked like the Wanderers would double their lead. A cross from the left flank by Bridge floated toward the back post, and Richard Garcia managed to drag down both Santalab and Youssouf Hersi as they attempted to attack the cross.

Even though normal #1 penalty taker Shinji Ono was on the field, it was Mark Bridge who took on the responsibility of the penalty. Janjetovic made a show of pointing to his left, and that was where Bridge hit is penalty, straight into the arms of Janjetovic. The miss was the clear turning point for the match and a Sydney FC comeback was inevitable.

On the hour mark it was the unusual source of Matt Jurman who levelled the game. Polenz had knocked down Garcia, giving Petkovic the chance to launch a ball into the mixer from deep on the Sydney FC left flank. Ante Covic came flying out of his goalmouth to punch, the ball sliced into the unknowing Jurman who collected his first ever A-League goal without trying.

In the 64th minute the entire stadium drew breath as Youssouf Hersi attempted an audacious long range effort. Hersi guided the ball toward the top right corner only for the flying Janjetovic to block the shot out for a corner. The resulting corner was hit long to Polenz who smashed a volley well wide.

New signing Golgol Mebrahtu was given his Western Sydney debut in place of Shinji Ono but suffered a disaster as he was injured seconds after entering play. Mebrahtu was then replaced by Labinot Haliti, and early reports are that the Mebrahtu injury is an anterior cruciate ligament injury that could see him out of action for potentially a year.

The evening turned into a nightmare for Western Sydney as Sydney FC took the lead as a result of one of the worst individual mistakes in the history of the A-League. Captain Michael Beauchamp received a short free kick from Ante Covic, and under no pressure decided to try to pass the ball back to the keeper. The pass was woeful, rolling 4 yards straight into the path of Garcia, who gleefully tapped into the open net as Covic dived desperately to block the shot even as he was out of the penalty area.

During stoppage time Jerome Polenz made the 4th major error of the night. The referee missed a blatant handball from a Sydney FC player and Polenz looked to catch the ball to play on from an expected foul only for referee Kris Griffiths-Jones to awarding a penalty against Polenz. Ali Abbas stepped up to fire home in front of the home support, Sydney FC winning their first Derby at home by three goals to one.

The Wanderers are making a habit of mistakes in recent weeks and it has cost the side any chance of retaining the Premiership, and may cost the club their Asian Champions League place if Adelaide continue to rise. In 2014 the Wanderers record stands at 6 losses, 2 draws and 3 wins, a stat that will not please manager Tony Popovic one bit.

The left side combination of Bridge and D'Apuzzo was toothless, their only bright notes being the aimless crosses from deep that lead to the lucky deflection to Ono for the first goal, and the penalty won that any competent defender would not have allowed themselves to give away. Their failure was compounded by Bridge missing a penalty. The likes of Haliti, Cole, Heffernan and Appiah will push for selection in the midweek ACL clash and our next A-League match against Adelaide.

The Wanderers next match is against Guizhou Renhe in the Asian Champions League group stage, in China on the 12th of March 2014.

Alleged abuse incident was the lead story on ABC TV show "Offsiders" this morning.

No mention of the game, the score, the atmosphere. Yawn

I've never understood how you can create a story with nothing more than an allegation.

you think that abbas would lose it for no reason? I knew and told the guys next to me he has been abused when he started going off.
No excuse for racial abuse especially in a professional environment, but Abbas was carrying on like a little cry baby. FFS just address the issue in a professional manner, if it is true. He did not act professionally at all and to be honest came across as a foolish over dramatic over sensitive little girl.

He's got a history of acting look a tool. Remember the bust up with ADP on field last season.

I'm sure he is a passionate guy but I'm sure one day he's gunna cop a red for don't something stupid.

Llama23, let's be graceful winners here.. let's face it we didn't play that well, and RBB do set the benchmark for active support, although tonight I think the Cove put in a good shift and narrowed the gap.

Do love the comeback from behind win though, with Bridge missing the PK.

Get your hand off it. When you're a graceful loser (and winner for that matter) then you can preach. A far as the Cove I assumed I couldn't hear them because I was in the thick of the RBB, that is until you hit the lead and then a sudden burst of around 10 minutes of sound was beginning to drown us out. It was your home game, you clearly out numbered us, but we didn't score till the 49th minute. If you think 10-15 minutes of going hard when you're winning a derby at home is a good shift then you're in la la land. Throwing in an "RBB set the benchmark" after all you've said since coming on this forum is a bit rich. Having been behind goals and standing next to a row of arms folded mullets last night I would disagree that we are currently the benchmark. Once again SFC came to the party with their tifo display and they have bragging rights for setting the benchmark in that respect. Take the win, enjoy it, hopefully we'll meet again this year and see a bit better quality than what both teams offered last night.

Disappointing is the word that springs to mind. We've conceded some soft goals this season that I would be disappointed in any team conceding, let alone a professional one. We have to be cleaner in defense.

We looked better in general play then in the last couple of weeks but come up against a good keeper who pulled out a couple of saves. A penalty should never be missed and Bridge from memory is our penalty taker. He scored against Perth after Cole was brought down. But I do wonder why he took it with the likes of Santalab and Ono out there with the form that Bridge is in.

Here's hoping the injury to Golgol is not too serious. So unfortunate for the young man to be injured in that manner.

Atmosphere was good though the CAC (crossed arm crew) were out in force last night.

Here's hoping the issues that Abbas brought up aren't true. That stuff is not tolerated in modern society and rightfully so.

    1. Bridge needs to be released, never rated that player and same with dappuzzo.

    2. it was such a lazy penalty Ono takes penalties most of the the time he should have stepped up to take it.

    3. covic should have sent that ball up not passing it to the fullback where he was miles far from his goal.

Bob, for a rival club's supporter I think I've been quite fair. I know how to take it on the chin after a loss (you kind of need to be to support SFC and keep sane).

This is what I posted after our last home derby loss.

Congrats to all of you on a great win.

We weren't really in it, except parts of 2nd half where we created half chances. Obviously missed Del Piero heaps, although I think Carle did well and kept us hoping until the final 20 minutes.

RBB were great, and a class above any other active support group in the country. Onus is on you now to not lose the passion over time, because every other supporter group is weaker now than in the first 2-3 seasons of the A-League. I now see in the RBB what I used to see in Victory's NT. The Cove too, while never reaching RBB's current heights, were stronger than we are now.

It's been a frustrating 3.5 years to be a Sydney FC fan. We are far from finding that winning formula. But we're not going anywhere, and the rivalry will grow into something that grips Sydney weeks before the ball is kicked. The big picture is we're onto something good. Cheers all.

I try to be fair but I see that you want me to be even more of a graceful winner + loser.  Sorry for falling short of your standards..

3 mistakes, 3 goals, end of story. They took their chances, credit to them, if we scored the penalty and went 2-0 up, I'm sure it would have ended up 3 or 4 nil to us. Just the way it goes sometimes. Too bad.

To be fair Parra you are one of the more knowledgeable and tolerable ESFC posters on here and you do add something, certainly better value than that other chump around earlier. You downfall is your often holier than thou attitude.  You come on here and type one thing then a few pages later will go against what you have said yourself. Am I downbeat over the loss? Of course.

Was the defeat avoidable? Of course.

Did ESFC actually deserve to win in terms of creating opportunities and taking advantage of them? Of course not.

Did we seem to lose those 50/50 situations all the time that last season we would win every time? Of course.

Is Santalab guilty of racial/cutural vilification? Of course not (until any full examination of the appropriate evidence proves otherwise)

Did the RBB lift the entire game and our spirits above and beyond what the pathetic hangers on in the Cove could do for their luck-riders? Hell ***** yes!

Were those who threw bottles on the pitch numpties? of course.

Should we ever bad mouth our own players when they make errors in the same manner that Cove attack like jackals on rotting carrion when finding fault with their squad? Hell ***** no!

I could continue but let me just say, I brought along some very old friends of mine and their two boys from Canberra, kitted them out with all the appropriate WSW gear and took them to the game when none of them had been to any A-League game before. When the youngest lad started talking about 'we scored a great goal' after Shinji's effort, or my long term mate and the boy referred to earlier joined in with the WDWSF...well, the harsh feeling of the loss was cushioned beyond belief thanks to bringing people I care for into the all-embracing Wanderers fold. Even this morning, before they left for their trip home the little fella grabbed his WSW shirt I picked up for him before the game and wore it again, like it was now his fave bit of gear.

Looks like an official complaint will be made..

I was hoping this could have been sorted without that and an apology and handshake may have done the job.

I'd say this will be the major football news for the next few weeks and then ....

SYDNEY FC will lodge an official complaint with Football Federation Australia after midfielder Ali Abbas was allegedly subjected to racial and cultural abuse in Saturday night’s A-League derby clash with Western Sydney.

It’s understood the FFA’s imminent investigation will centre on one unnamed Wanderers player.

Abbas complained that slurs were made against him in relation to his cultural and religious background during Saturday night’s heated clash.

Sydney FC and the FFA both released statements today confirming that an official complaint will be made on behalf of Abbas, who was born in Iraq and became an Australian citizen in 2012.

“We will be undergoing due process with FFA,†Sydney chief executive officer Tony Pignata said in a statement today.

“We ask that the privacy of Ali Abbas is respected at this time and no further comment will be made while the complaint procedure takes it course.†The FFA said in a statement that it had received advice from Sydney FC that the formal complaint would be made and the matter would be dealt with under the game’s National Member Protection Policy.

Once the complaint is lodged, the FFA will launch a confidential investigation into the incident.

Possible outcomes include mediation or referral to a disciplinary tribunal

Earlier, former Socceroo John Aloisi has urged Abbas to take his claims of cultural and religious abuse further with Football Federation Australia.

“He came out after the game and said it was (about his) culture and he talked about his religion, and (how) he doesn't like anyone attacking that,†Aloisi said on Channel 9.

“If that is the case, they need to stamp it out. The FFA need to come out and investigate.

“Abbas needs to go to the match officials (and say) 'this happened and can someone do something about it'? Because there's no room for it in our game.

“We're trying to stamp it out. And they have to set a good example, the players. I know (the excuses): the heat of the battle, (a crowd of) 40,000, great atmosphere. But you can't be racially abusive.†Abbas sealed the 3-1 win converting a penalty in injury time in what was an action-packed second half, but his allegations threaten to sour what was a momentous victory for Sydney.

When was asked about his outburst in a post-match interview on Saturday, he said it was due to comments that were made about his ethnic background and his religion but didn't reveal who made them or when they took place.

“We are not here to attack religion or culture, we are here to play football,†he told Fox Sports.

“I come from a different country, I respect everyone here. I should get it back. If I don't get it back, I'm going to attack. “That's what happened.

“If people attack religion, if people attack culture — I'm against that.

No surprises here. As soon as Abbas went public he set the wheels in motion. All you have to say in Australia is 'racism' and it gets people's attention. It is what it is now. It'll be interesting to see how FFA is going to respond to this, but I doubt that anything good is going to come out of this. Maybe those of us who have been called 'westie scum' or the like should launch a complaint as well. Wouldn't that be fun?
