  • Western Sydney Wanderers Are Champions Of Asia

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have been crowned the Champions of Asia after a stoic 0-0 draw in Saudi Arabia, the Wanderers winning the two legged tie 1-0 on aggregate following Tomi Juric's goal in Sydney in the first leg.

The 64th minute strike in the first leg at Parramatta Stadium proved to be the only goal of the tie, with the "Blue Wave" crashing forlornly against a Red & Black fortification manned by a team who refused to concede a goal to their better resourced opponents.

In the 18th minute Al Hilal had the first chance of the game, swinging a free kick from the left flank that the Wanderers weren't able to get anything on, thankfully for them neither did one of their opponents, a right boot stuck out but agonisingly distant from making contact.

A minute before half-time the first penalty shout of the night was waved away by Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura. Inside the area a ball rolled into the path of the flying Nawaf Shaker, Antony Golec clipped the right foot of the attacker but the theatrical leap perhaps weighed the incidence in the favour of the Australians.

After the break it was another stonewall penalty turned down, Salman Alfaraj latching onto a through ball deep in the right corner of the penalty area and was clearly brought down by Ante Covic but wasn't punished for the indiscretion. Another potential penalty came when the ball was kicked at short range into arms of Brendon Santalab, Nishimura judging that it was ball to hand rather than hand to ball.

The Saudi's pushed on and on, pressing for a goal that would take the game into extra time, and it looked for all money like they had one in the 84th minute. A cutback found talismanic striker Yasser Al-Qahtani, his shot from near the penalty spot had no right to be saved but the big hand of Covic found a way. The ball bounced once before spinning out for a corner just inches away from the goalpost. The save was the biggest moment for an Australian keeper since Mark Schwarzer in the famous shootout against Uruguay.

The Wanderers had precious little attack of their own, the best chance coming from a mazy Vitor Saba dribble that released Labinot Haliti, the shot being blocked desperately. Western Sydney didn't need a goal however, an eventual 6 minutes of injury time passed before the final whistle blew and the Wanderers were officially crowned Champions of Asia.

The immediate post-game scene was marked by disgraceful conduct from the Al Hilal players, with Matthew Spiranovic being spat on and headbutted, a melee threatened to breakout but cooler heads prevailed.

The extraordinary end to the Wanderers maiden assault on the continental stage ended in a victory that few if any would have predicted in the first year or even second year of the club's existence. The championship is an eternal credit to the tactical nous of Tony Popovic, and the resilience of every man to have pulled on the famous Red & Black hoops of Western Sydney.

The Club World Cup now looms in December, the Wanderers joining San Lorenzo (CONMEBOL), Real Madrid (UEFA), ES Setif (CAF), Cruz Azul (CONCACAF), Auckland City (OFC) & hosts Moghreb Tetouan in Morocco from the 10th of December. The Wanderers will face Cruz Azul of Mexico for the right to face European giants Real Madrid in the semi-final. Such a class would be the biggest competitive fixture for an Australian side since South Melbourne took on Manchester United in the 2000 edition of the competition.

Tony Popovic spoke after the match about the win, "We were called a small club yesterday. Today we are the biggest in Asia."

The next match for the Champions of Asia is against the Wellington Phoenix, on Friday the 7th of November.

I know I shouldn't... but I was curious as to what the ESFC supporters thought about us becoming reigning Asian Champions so I had a peek in their forum. Most were pretty good about it and 'credit were credit is due' etc. One moron though wrote, and I quote,

"Given how poor quality the opposition these guys had to play in that tournament were I could name at least 7 A-League teams that would've gotten the same result. Not that special at all. Would've been truly special years ago when the level of football in this league was lower but not now."

Really??? Are you that twisted, 'Pauly'??

Cant expect them to be over the moon, I actually prefer to hear them whining and trying to shoot it down it means it hurt them more and makes them easier to dislike lol.

I think most Sydney fans have been good about it from what I have seen as well, fair play to them you cant hate on the Champions of Asia and most of them are smart enough to know that.

I am happy to share this victory with all of Australia, it just means we have earnt a lot of respect from the rest opf the league and they have been pretty consistent in their support of our run from what I have seen on twitter and in the media.

ESFC seem to be consoling themselves with our up coming A League schedule and club world cup commitments, they think we are farked for the rest of the season.

But I thought with them being the Man United of Australia and all that they would be used to schedules such as ours? I mean it is only by being successful that you get schedules like ours ;)

looks like there are 2 trophies, one that was presented to us on the podium, and a replica with "2014" on it that i assume we get to keep! :xbop:

They make a new one each year (like the Melbourne Cup, AFL Trophy, etc.), the 2014 is on one side, the other side just has the ACL logo :) But from my understanding, we'll get to keep this one anyway :)

ha ha yeah maybe i got that wrong, the different pics might just be the trophy turned around! not sure

    *fixed*

Minor Premiers is for NRL/AFL etc.

Premiership = best performing team over the season (27 rounds), none of this 3 weekends of post-regular season games means your crowned the best team of the league.

Wonder what kind of interest Popa generates now from the world, if we make a go of the Club World Cup, will be even harder to keep him :(

This club and its supporters are the benchmark, pinnicale of Australian Sport.

No other code or club brings people of different races and culture into an orgy of love, sweat and tears for  this club that keep on giving and achieving. The doubters will always be there, but we will ALWAYS let the results and achievements do the talking.

I've never been happier and prouder to be a foundation Western Sydney Wanderers member.

Credit goes to every single person who has ever had a positive contribution to this powerhouse club.

    I liked BUT

We haven't scored an away field goal since the group phase

What is this 'field goal' and 'phase' stuff you talk of ? :P;)

Hm. Maybe something got lost in translation. Let me try again.

We scored in both Hiroshima and Guangzhou from the spot, and didn't score at all in Seoul and Riyadh.

The last regular goal was scored by Santa in Ulsan, Round 5 of the Group Stage.

Open play is the term you are after.
Ah, if course. Tnx. The joys of being a non native English speaker.

Well after we win the ACL again next year and play Bayern Munich in the FIFA world club cup next year then you will be huge demand :)

    Seyi Adeleke

    Nikita Rukavytsya

    Romeo Castelen

When you add Spira and Juric taking a more active role as they regain full fitness and Saba nearly fully fit we will hopefully have 6 better starters than in the ACL Final.

I guess WSW will be back by Saturday morning from the A League fixture this week?

Would it be pushing it too much for the team and for council arrangements to have some kind of event in Parra this coming Sunday afternoon? Would be great for the kids who cannot get to the airport or those who might not get tix to the next home game to see the boys maybe go from the town hall to Parra Stadium on an open top bus with the trophy?

But cannot complain after all the council did with the live site and also I think the boys might be shattered and need a Sunday rest up!

    Just thought i would ask.

Im keen to get the jersey with the recognition of winning the asian champs league. Would like to wear it to a league games !!

    Anyone have any ideas:

    - is it the club that puts out the jersey ? (guess it probably is)

    - is it with the gold star or something else ?

    - when will it happen ? (this season ?)

    - will it be for a set period of time (1 season) or does the star stay on the jersey forever

    Just damn excited !!!!
