  • Another 4-3 Loss For Wanderers

    mack

A red card to Keanu Baccus set the scene for Melbourne City to claim a very late 4-3 winner against the Wanderers tonight.

With Kwame Yeboah out through injury, and Oriol Riera only fit enough to make the bench, it was Abraham Majok who lead the line for the Wanderers, but the opening stages of the game it was the defence making the headlines.

Just 30 seconds into the match Keanu Baccus made a horrible mess out of what should have been a simple gaining of possession. After he & Tarek Elrich failed to bring the ball down, Riley McGree came in on the blind side of the young midfielder, Baccus reached for a back pass to Nick Suman, only for the horribly weighted ball to end up in the path of Ritchie De Laet who stepped around the stranded Suman to finish into an empty net.

The Wanderers equalised on the half-hour mark through Roly Bonevacia. He stepped up to the penalty spot when Curtis Good knocked Jaushua Sotirio to the ground, a very soft but ultimately technically fine decision, and one that was upheld by the VAR. Bonevacia's stutter step run-up caused Eugene Galekovic to make his move too early, and Roly fired it into the netting on the opposite side.

Parity did not last for very long. 6 minutes before half-time Luke Brattan launched an extra-ordinary blast, after nutmegging Nick Fitzgerald, Brattan took a single touch then fired rocket into the top corner.

After having an average first half in defence, Tass Mourdoukoutas stepped up on the attack to bring the Wanderers back level. O'Doherty picked up the ball wide on the edge of the penalty area, and with the City penalty area packed after the preceding corner, O'Doherty whipped a cross to the back stick, that Mourdoukoutas rose highest for and headed home for his first A-League goal.

Western Sydney had an incredible 3-2 lead in the 54th minute. Roly Bonevacia found Jaushua Sotirio on the edge of the area in an acre of space, the flying winger lined up a strike, curling the ball into the top corner giving Galekovic no chance.

Keanu Baccus put his side's position in real doubt with a moment of madness, after a midfield battle for a bouncing ball, Baccus forlornly chased through to the City defence, then hammered his opponent with a silly lunge. The official had no hesitation to produce a yellow card, and after being booked earlier in the game in a melee following the Sotirio goal, he was given the inevitable red card.

Melbourne City went in search of an equaliser of their own, and had a golden chance when Lachlan Wales was played in on goal. With a shot on goal seemingly a certain thing, Mourdoukoutas added a goal saving tackle to his goal scoring feat, cleanly cutting the ball out from the feet of Wales for a corner. City found their 3rd goal in the 86th minute, De Laet picking up a brace when he picked up the ball on the edge of the area, and managed to squeeze out an angle to shoot through Mourdoukoutas, and shot past Suman at the far post.

With the game drawing to a close, a siege of the Wanderers penalty area began as City sought out a seemingly inevitable winner, and inevitable it was. The abysmal set piece defending of the Wanderers once again failing at the worst moment. Winning a corner, City launched it into the penalty area in the 94th minute, Bart Schenkeveld was left completely unmarked and he rose and scored the winner with an unerring header.

Another game, another failure to see out a win. Baccus has once again put his side under immense pressure with idiotic red cards, and despite scoring one stunning goal, Sotirio butchered two more chances after being put through one on one with the keeper. Babbel has yet to correct the ongoing failure of the team to defend set pieces. With two days rest they will face Brisbane Roar and could drop to 9th if they lose.

The Wanderers face Brisbane Roar in Brisbane on Friday the 25th.

The kids need a leader we don’t have one put NTS in for Elrich in that team last night no way we lose it he wouldn’t allow it. Leadership isn’t just barking orders it’s someone players will look up to.

Babbel is an experienced pro he will know this, I have no doubt it’s a priority next season to recruit a captain who will run the field on the show.

Ziegler is the only player in the squad who remotely looks like that, and he’s been injured as often as not

I didn’t see game last night, was out and checking scores on phone. I did watch the first goal, terrible

So do I bother watching the game on Kayo, or have I seen it before a week ago?

The refs had a major hand in the result the week before......last night was pure Wanderers..........I wouldn't watch a replay as you may want to to keep what little sanity you have left......it's getting beyomd frustrating......and you may end up like this............

Agree with this. We had the fight last night to get back into the game but being able to hold on and grind out a result is what we are lacking. We need a leader. Hamill and Elrich may be senior players that some of the youngsters look up to but they are no a leader.

It’s the same game you have seen all of Jan

thank god this summer of football ends this Friday haha

just watch the highlights on FoxSports but they might not show you sotirio misses only his pearler

We actually were the better team before Baccus committed his brain snap the game was entertaining - if there is one thing we can’t complain of lately is the wanderers probably with the nix are the more entertaining team to watch!

We badly need what ESFC have in Brosque at WSW. It is that kind of player we miss...

Most that we want gone are off contract so a cleanout is a certainty

My mail is that some of the players we know are nothing short of terrible are slated to be kept for next season.

It's the most depressing rumour i've heard yet.

Makes me wonder how he managed to chip the keeper in the ACL game against FC Seoul 2 seasons ago

I was talked into coming to Melbourne for this game - a few days away...  I was wondering why through yesterday whenI realised who would be on the pitch and especially after our last effort against City.  We were very pleased with how the boys did.  They put it in and really gave everything.  Being at AAMI and close to the action (unlike SOP) you could see and hear the effort.  Elrich constantly shouting to the defenders.  Everyone worked their guts out and 5 of our players had less combined HAL experience than most of the individuals on City's team.  We were shorter and smaller by a mile.  It was a credit that we didn't concede off more set pieces because they were head and shoulders above our boys (except Tass and Majok). If that City team are genuine 4th place then our NYL team plus a few squaddies were better for most of the match in terms of effort and pushing then they were.

Baccus is a worry.  My problem with the 2nd yellow was that he was on a yellow.  I wanted to see that earlier and harder.  If he'd done the job right then the arrogant piece of work (Shenken...) would not hav ebeen on the park to score the last goal.  Suman was way to slow off the mark to stop the firt goal - he seemed to watch de Laet and then react too late (it was a shocking pass).  The boys really defended well for much of that last half but size, speed, experience and pressure lost the game.  Take out de Laet and City would not have won.

It was a really, really good effort by a team who are so weighed down by injuries and despite losing they were good.  The future is bright - even if the present is grim.  I would also have liked for our boys to niggle Baccus and get him to lash out.  We really do need an experienced, big and commanding DM.  That would ahve bene a big difference last night.

Kinda sums up the home crowd right there. If no one scored, we'd never had heard them

    Most-frustrating-season-ever.

Broken record: being the better team, or on par at least, and that's despite all the injuries. But losing just about every game by one goal. If it's not the ref, it's var, or someone missing a sitter, or a senior player gifting goals. Now for a change a junior player has himself sent off and helps killing of the game. Crazy stuff!

Babbel hinted that the players are scared of scoring, if that's what he meant. Sotirio sure had reason to cry himself to sleep last night.

Second half of the presser was most revealing how Aussie youth level football compares with Germany. A revolution is needed, by the sounds of it, and our new training facility can't come soon enough.

If you are talking about Hamill, Sotirio: they are not going to do much damage in the stands, or on the bench. Oriol, roly, Raul, treejack by the sounds of it, Bridgey, risdon: they will free up a lot of money. Their replacements will define the quality of the squad. Brattan would be a good start, and I can't quite believe that I would welcome that guy to the club. That's how much we need to player like him in the middle.

Sotirio please explain how you can score worldie from a difficult area and not score any of your 2 1 v 1s?

Also can someone please explain to the players how to defend corners. I was tearing my my hair out and expected every time for the net bulge against us.

And Baccus geez get that s*** out of your game 2 stupid yellow cards unacceptable.

If I was Sotirio I would stay back in training and simulate 1v1s cause he has had few and you can see he hesitating once he receives a ball when it should be his bread and butter. We all know his fast he should have confidence to outrun any defence and round a keeper with that speed.

It was definitely disappointing but once Baccus had a brain explosion it was always heading that way.

We can't be too hard on the lads. Yeah sloppy corner defending is inexcusable at this level but the fight to get back in the game and the quality patches of youth player linking up was good to watch.

We'll turn the corner soon but it's too late for this season.

I think everyone is happy to give Babbel more time. There is much more goodwill towards him than Gumby experienced. Maybe had they switched timeframes when they took over that wouldn't be the case but we don't want to be churning through managers (and be like the Championship in the UK where it seems you get one season to succeed or you're out).

However...  he will get one more season and the goodwill will run out. He will recruit more or less of his own choosing and he will have a long, long off season to work on plans and styles of play. If we fail to make the top 6 next year at our new stadium the shiny gloss of Wanderland2 won't save him. Surely top 6 alone wouldn't be deemed good enough?

Babbel's rubber hits the road next year. If we are out of it by half-way again though he will probably walk away himself.

ACL or bust next season. Nothing less.

How about Brattan's goal celebration where he sat on the ground cross legged, pressed his hands together and bowed like he is a friggin'  swami or something?  What a tosser.  No way I want him in our team now.  That kind of stuff belongs in Melbourne.

Lol, I'd take Brattan no problem toss bag or not...

I'm still 100% #Babbelin but are we sure that the owners will fund the team he wants?

I would think the owners would but its also how many are we letting go as well.

That will provide how much of the salary cap you have available and you would be looking at an LB, CDM and possible striker if Reira leaves (you never know but most likely he will leave). Money should be spent there, then you have ABJ whether he stays or  goes and you would also be looking at a CAM.

RB seems to be ok if and when Risdon leaves with Tate Russel who is generally impressive and I would be tempted with a new  an experienced CB over Hammil who has shown that he is a squaddie and the bandaid you put on if someone is suspended or injured. Unfortunately my harsh assessment is for our team he just is not up leading our defence.

I'm a fan of pre-season form, we can't go getting beat 4-0 by Jets and 3-0 by Mariners again no matter how much of a relaxing hit out it's meant to be.

The team can make a statement.

It goes back further than that. We struggled against NPL opponents Manly, Toonie, Olympic & Hills in our 1st few friendly games & I was like what FMD, we're a basket case.

That standard of pre-season won't be accepted in 19/20.
